  • This study formulates a new geometric parameterization scheme to effectively address numerical analysis subject to the variation of the fiber radius of a square unit cell. In particular, the proposed mesh-morphing approach may lead to a parameterized weak form whose bilinear and linear forms are affine in the geometric parameter of interest, i.e. the fiber radius. As a result, we may certify the reduced basis analysis of a square unit cell model for any parameters in a predetermined parameter domain with a rigorous a posteriori error bound. To demonstrate the utility of the proposed geometric parameterization, we consider a two-dimensional, steady-state heat conduction analysis dependent on two parameters: a fiber radius and a thermal conductivity. For rapid yet rigorous a posteriori error evaluation, we estimate a lower bound of a coercivity constant via the min-θ method as well as the successive constraint method. Compared to the corresponding finite element analysis, the constructed reduced basis analysis may yield nearly the same solution at a computational speed about 29 times faster on average. In conclusion, the proposed geometric parameterization scheme is conducive for accurate yet efficient reduced basis analysis.

  • The differential white blood cell count plays an important role in the diagnosis of different diseases. It is a tedious task to count these classes of cell manually. An automatic counter using computer vision helps to perform this medical test rapidly and accurately. Most commercial-available automatic white blood cell analysis composed mainly 3 steps including segmentation, feature extraction and classification. In this paper we concentrate on the first step in automatic white-blood-cell analysis by proposing a segmentation scheme that utilizes a benefit of active contour. Specifically, the binary image is obtained by thresolding of the input blood smear image. The initial shape of active is then placed roughly inside the white blood cell and allowed to grow to fit the shape of individual white blood cell. The white blood cell is then separated using the extracted contour. The force that drives the active contour is the combination of gradient vector flow force and balloon force. Our purposed technique can handle very promising to separate the remaining red blood cells.

  • Recently, photovoltaic system has been studied widely as a renewable energy system, because it does not produce environmental pollution and it has infinity energy source from the sun. A study on photovoltaic system has a lot of problems like as reappearance and repetition of some situation in the laboratory experiment for development of MPPT algorithm and islanding detection algorithm, because output characteristics of solar cell are varied by irradiation and surface temperature of solar cell. And this system is consisted a lot of solar cell unit. Therefore, the assistant equipment which emulates the solar cell characteristics which can be controlled arbitrarily by researcher is require to the researchers for reliable experimental data. In this paper, the virtual implement of solar cell (VISC) system is proposed to solve these problems and to achieve reliable experimental result on photovoltaic system. VISC system emulates the solar cell output characteristics, and this system can substitute solar cell in laboratory experiment system. To realize the VISC, mathematical model of solar cell is studied for driving converter and the DC/DC converters are compared in viewpoint of tracking error using computer simulation. And then analysis of parallel and series characteristics was done for combination of VISC model.

  • A knowledge of the accurate characteristic impedance of a GTEM cell is very useful to design it. This paper discusses the characteristic impedance of a GTEM cell applicable to both susceptibility and emission measurements, considering opening angle of it. The over-RGM for analysis is described : this numerical method is operated with respect to the spherical coordinate system. Some results are compared with others and the validity of this analysis is estabished. The characteristic impedances of a GTEM cell with the variation of geometrical constructions on cross section are presented ; the effect of the opening angle on the characteristic impedance is show. Finally, the electirc field uniformities on a cross section of a GTEM cell are considered for various opening angles.

  • Spar platforms have been installed as a competitive alternative offshore production structure for deepwater oil field. Since the first spar platform was constructed, its configuration has evolved to the so-called the truss spar and then the cell spar. This paper describes the dynamic analysis and fatigue life assessment of steel catenary riser (SCR) connected to cell spar platform. Two different cell spar platforms are considered herein; the original cell spar and the modified one. The original cell spar was modified by introducing an additional damping plate at its bottom in order to reduce wave-frequency motions. Firstly the wave-frequency motions of cell spar platforms are calculated based on the potential theory. Then, the dynamic responses of SCR induced by platform motions are computed. Finally the fatigue life of SCR is estimated by spectral method and the performance of two spar platforms are compared in terms of the fatigue life. Through the present study, it is found that the fatigue life of the modified cell spar increases only slightly.

  • The effect of the polyunsaterated fatty acids, linoleic acid(LA), arachidonic acid(AA) and conjugated dienoic linoleic acid(CLA) on IEC-6 cells (rat intestinal cell)proliferation and cell transduction have been determined in vitro. IEC-6 cells proliferation was assessed by cell growth and [3H]-thymidine incroporation analysis. At 10 μM concentration , the proliferationof cells supplemented with AA or LA was significantly higher than that of CLA. [3H]-thymidine uptake showed the same results. LA and AA increased [3H]-thymidine uptake more than CLA. The stimulatory effect of LA or AA was even more pronounced in the presence of IGF. Both cell number analysis and [3H]-thymidine incorporation revealed that IEC-6 cell proliferation was influenced differently by exogenous free fatty acids, in which AA or LA stimulated IEC-6 cell proliferation and CLA inhibited it. Tyorosine phosphorylation provides a key switch to regulate celluar acitivity in response to extracellular stimuli. At 20 μM and 10μM, AA with IGF-1 stimulated protein tyrosine phophorylation in IEC-6 cells, but LA's impact was less than that of AA. CLA and CLA with IGF-1 inhibited protein tyrosine phosphorylation in IEC-6 cells. These results suggest there is a possible correlation between cell proliferation and IGF receptor tyrosine knase activity driven by AA.

  • Purpose: This study was done to develop a cell phone addiction scale for Korean adolescents. Methods: The process included construction of a conceptual framework, generation of initial items, verification of content validity, selection of secondary items, preliminary study, and extraction of final items. The participants were 577 adolescents in two middle schools and three high schools. Item analysis, factor analysis, criterion related validity, and internal consistency were used to analyze the data. Results: Twenty items were selected for the final scale, and categorized into 3 factors explaining 55.45% of total variance. The factors were labeled as withdrawal/tolerance (7 items), life dysfunction (6 items), and compulsion/persistence (7 items). The scores for the scale were significantly correlated with self-control, impulsiveness, and cell phone use. Cronbach's alpha coefficient for the 20 items was .92. Scale scores identified students as cell phone addicted, heavy users, or average users. Conclusion: The above findings indicate that the cell phone addiction scale has good validity and reliability when used with Korean adolescents.

  • In this paper, a zinc electrowinning cell is fully optimized to achieve a uniform current distribution at electrode surfaces. To effectively deal with an electromagnetically coupled problem with multi-dimensional design variables, a sampling-based sensitivity approach is combined with a highly tuned multiphysics simulation model. The model involves the interrelation between electrochemical reactions and electromagnetic phenomena so as to predict accurate current distributions in the electrowinning cell. In the sampling-based sensitivity approach, Kriging-based surrogate models are generated in a local window, and accordingly their sensitivity values are extracted. Such unique design strategy facilitates optimizing very complicated multiphysics and multi-dimensional design problems. Finally, ten design variables deciding the electrolytic cell structure are optimized, and then the uniformity of current distribution in the optimized cell is examined through the comparison with existing cell designs.

  • Performance analysis of NTT/BT protocol is investigated, which is a GFC (Generic Flow Control) ptotocol in ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode ) network and is based on cyclic reset mechanism. THe mean cell delay time is proposed as a performance measure of NTT/BT protocol. The mean cell delay time is defined as the duration from the instant the cell arrives at the transmission buffer until the cell is fully transmitted. The process of cell transmission can be described as a single server queueing modle with two dependent services. By utilizing this model, mean cell delay time is obtained and sensitivity of the factors such as window size and reset period is also analysed.
