제올라이트광물을 이용한 폐수중의 중금속제거 (Removal of Heavy Metal Ions in Wastewater Using Zeolite Minerals)

  • All the applications of natural zeolites make use of one or more of their physical and chemical properties: adsorption, ion-exchange and related molecular sieve properties, dehydration and rehydration, and siliceous composition. Accordingly, the applications of zeolite have been carried out in the various aspects because of its large cation exchange capacity and adsorption properties. In this paper, the adsorption effect of heavy metal ions in wastewater on zeolite mineral by batch adsorption process is studied. The amounts of adsorbed ions were variable by original pH and ionic concentration, especially original pH of solution had an important effect on the adsorption. In case of low pH solution, e.g. below 3.0, clinoptilolite adsorbed $Pb^{2+}$ ,$ Cd ^{2+ }$ , $Cu^{2+}$ and $Zn^{ 2+}$ , but mordenite almost did not adsorb except $Pb^{2+}$ . Under the same conditions, these ions were more adsorbed on clinoptilolite than on mordenite mineral. The velocity of adsorption was relatively fast and it was confirmed by shaking test that the equilibrium of adsorption could be attained in about one hour. The species of exchangeable cation of zeolite had an effect on its removing ability and zeolite of the sodium-exchanged type was the best.

초음파 및 환원제 첨가가 중금속 오염토양의 토양세척에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Sonication and Reducing Agent Addition on Soil Washing of Heavy Metals-contaminated Soil)

  • This research was conducted to estimate the effect of sonication and reducing agent addition on soil washing of heavy metals-contaminated soil. Sonication trained in soil washing did not significantly increased extraction efficiency of heavy metal compared to soil washing only. The extraction efficiency of sonication trained in soil washing was 12% increased for Pb in 0.01M EDTA leaching solution. Pb and Cd showed higher extraction efficiency in case of reducing agent treatment with mechanical shaking than that with sonication. However, the extraction efficiency of Cu and Zn in case of reducing agent treatment with sonication was over 2 times higher than that in with soil washing. Therefore, application of reducing agent addition with sonication or mechanical shaking should be decided differently for pretreatment of soil washing, according to the kind of heavy metal. It was estimated that sonication after adding reducing agent could increase removal efficiency of Zn or Cu-contaminated soil and shorten the treatment time.

Hazardous Air Pollutants Emission Characteristics from Cement Kilns Co-burning Wastes

  • Emission characteristics of air pollutants from three commercially operating cement kilns co-burning waste were investigated. The major heavy metals emitted were mercury (Hg), zinc (Zn), nickel (Ni), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and arsenic (As) Removal efficiency of the bag filter was above 98.5% for heavy metals (except Hg), and above 60% for Hg. Higher fractions of heavy metals entering the bag filter were speciated to cement kiln dust. On average, 3.3% of the -heavy metals of medium and low toxicity (Pb, Ni, and Cr) entering the bag filter were released into the atmosphere. Among highly toxic heavy metals, 0.14% of Cd, 0.01% of As, and 40% of Hg entering the bag filter were released into the atmosphere. In passing through the bag filter, the proportion of oxidized Hg in all cases increased. Emission variations of hazardous air pollutants in cement kilns tested were related to raw materials, fuel, waste feed and operating conditions. Volatile organic compounds detected in gas emissions were toluene, acrylonitrile benzene, styrene, 1,3-butadiene, and methylene chloride. Although hazardous air pollutants in emissions from cement kilns co-burning waste were within the existing emission limit, efforts are required to minimize their levels.

폐슬러지와 폐굴껍질의 중금속 흡착특성 (Adsorption Characteristics of Heavy Metals for Waste Sludge and Oyster Shell)

  • This study was performed to investigate the possible uses of waste sludge for the removal of heavy metal ions. The adsorption experiments were conducted with wastes such as sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge and oyster shell to evaluate their sorption characteristics. Heavy metals selected were cadmium, copper and lead. in the sorption experiments on the sewage treatment sludge, water treatment sludge, oyster shell and soil, sorption occurred in the beginning and it reached equilibrium after 40 minutes on the oyster shell and 4 hour on the sewage treatment sludge and water treatment sludge. Results of Freundlich isotherms indicated that sewage treatment sludge could be properly used as an adsorbent for heavy metals and sorption strength of heavy metals was in the order of Pb > Cu > Cd. In the influence of pH on the adsorbents, sorption rate was more than 80% in pH 4 and most of heavy metals were adsorbed in pH 9. Adsorption rate of Cd decreased with decreasing pH and then adsorption rate of Cu was lower in soil.

Removal study of As (V), Pb (II), and Cd (II) metal ions from aqueous solution by emulsion liquid membrane

  • Emulsion Liquid Membrane (ELM) is a prominent technique for the separation of heavy metal ions from wastewater due to the fast extraction and is a single-stage operation of stripping-extraction. The selection of the components (Surfactant and Carrier) of ELM is a very significant step for its preparation. In the ELM technique, the primary water- in-oil (W/O) emulsion is emulsified in water to produce water-in-oil-in-water (W/O/W) emulsion. The water in oil emulsion was prepared by mixing the membrane phase and internal phase. To prepare the membrane phase, the extractant D2EHPA (di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid) was used as a mobile carrier, Span-80 as a surfactant, and Paraffin as a diluent. Moreover, the internal (receiving) phase was prepared by dissolving sulphuric acid in water. Di-(2- ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid such as surfactant concentration, carrier concentration, sulphuric acid concentration in the receiving (internal) phase, agitation time (emulsion phase and feed phase), the volume ratio of the membrane phase to the receiving phase, the volume ratio of the external feed phase to the primary water-in-oil emulsion and pH of feed were studied on the percentage extraction of metal ions at 20℃. The results show that it is possible to remove 78% for As(V), 98% for Cd(II), and 99% for Pb(II). Adsorption Characteristics of Multi-Metal Ions by Red Mud, Zeolite, Limestone, and Oyster Shell

  • In this study, the performances of various adsorbents-red mud, zeolite, limestone, and oyster shell-were investigated for the adsorption of multi-metal ions ($Cr^{3+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $As^{3+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, and $Pb^{2+}$) from aqueous solutions. The result of scanning electron microscopy analyses indicated that the some metal ions were adsorbed onto the surface of the media. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that the Si(Al)-O bond (red mud and zeolite) and C-O bond (limestone and oyster shell) might be involved in heavy metal adsorption. The changes in the pH of the aqueous solutions upon applying adsorbents were investigated and the adsorption kinetics of the metal ions on different adsorbents were simulated by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The sorption process was relatively fast and equilibrium was reached after about 60 min of contact (except for $As^{3+}$). From the maximum capacity of the adsorption kinetic model, the removal of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ were higher than for the other metal ions. Meanwhile, the reaction rate constants ($k_{1,2}$) indicated the slowest sorption in $As^{3+}$. The adsorption mechanisms of heavy metal ions were not only surface adsorption and ion exchange, but also surface precipitation. Based on the metal ions' adsorption efficiencies, red mud was found to be the most efficient of all the tested adsorbents. In addition, impurities in seawater did not lead to a significant decrease in the adsorption performance. It is concluded that red mud is a more economic high-performance alternative than the other tested adsorption materials for applying a removal of multi-metal in seawater.

통수실험에 의한 갯벌의 오염물질 정화능력 평가 (Evaluation to Purification Capacity of Pollutants by Column Test with the tidal flat sediment)

  • 충남 서천군 춘장대에서 채취한 갯벌을 통수칼럼에 넣고 오염물질 정화능력을 평가 해 보았다. 각 칼럼에 사용된 시료수는 하수를 G2여과지(6$\mu\textrm{m}$)로 여과한 여액(R1), 생하수를 GF/C여과지(12$\mu\textrm{m}$)로 여과 후 하수중의 미생물에 의한 영향을 제거하기 위하여 고압멸균기(autoclaver)로 12$0^{\circ}C$에서 15분간 멸균한 하수(R2), 여과ㆍ멸균된 하수를 membrane filter로 여과한 해수와 1:1 (하수:해수)로 혼합한 시료수(R3) 그리고 R3에서 사용된 하수와 해수를 이용해 그 비를 1:2로 혼합한 시료수(R4)를 이용하였다. 4종류로 조제된 시험수를 이용한 통수실험 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 통수실험에 의해 제거된 COD 양은 시료수에 하수의 함유량이 증가할수록 증가하였다. 암모니아질소의 경우 각 칼럼에서 580분 실험한 후 총 누적 제거양은 R1 90.1mg, R2 81.0mg, R3 27.6mg, R4 4.1mg이었다. R1과 R2에서 총 누적 제거 양이 해수가 1:1로 함유된 R3보다는 약 3배 높았고, 생하수와 해수가 1:2로 함유된 R4보다는 약 20배 높아 시료수에 하수의 함량이 높을수록 COD와 마찬가지로 암모니아질소가 잘 제거되는 것으로 판단되었다. 총인의 경우 각 칼럼에서 580분 실험한 후 제거된 총 누적 양은 R1 3.4mg, R2 4.2mg, R3 5.6mg, R4 2.0mg이었다. 평균 유입수 농도와 평균 유출수 농도로 구한 Pb의 평균 제거율은 R3와 R4에서 94.6%와 94.9%로 R1과 R2에서의 65.5%와 77.0%보다 약간 높았고, Cd의 평균 제거율도 R3와 R4에서 93.1%와 88.5%로 R1과 R2에서의 61.2%와 82.7%보다 약간 높았다. 이상과 같이 칼럼실험에서 중금속은 해수가 첨가된 시료에서 제거율이 높았다. 하지만 초기 20분간 흡착된 중금속의 양은 580분 동안 흡착된 총 양의 3~4%로 유사한 값을 나타내었다.

폐기물매립지 차수재로서 고화토의 중금속 고정능력 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Fixation of Heavy Metals with Stabilized Soils in the Landfill Liner)

  • We performed the geotechnical experiments of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with the stabilized soil in the laboratory, proved that it is useful to use the stabilized soil as an alternative for natural clay soil. Also, for mixing adding materials in the stabilized soil, it was determined that 1) the optimal mixing ratio of cement : bentonite : stabilizing agent was 90:60:1 of mass ratio(kg) for 1㎥ with soil, 2) it was also possible to use low quality bentonite(B\circled2) classified by swelling grade because of little difference from results of the hydraulic conductivity and compressive strength test with high quality bentonite(B\circled1). According to the results of the fixation ability of heavy metals(Pb$^{2+}$, Cu$^{2+}$, Cd$^{2+}$, Zn$^{2+}$) with soil and additives, authors can conclude that the higher pH condition had the more removal efficiency of heavy metals. B\circled1 and cement had especially high removal efficiency of heavy metals in a whole pH because of high alkalinity.alinity.

화학적으로 개질된 왕겨 및 톱밥(미송, 참나무, 포플러)의 중금속 흡착특성 (Adsorption Characteristics of Heavy Metal Ions onto Chemically Modified Rice Husk and Sawdust from Aqueous Solutions)

  • 왕겨와 톱밥 3종(미송, 참나무, 포플러)을 sodium hydroxide(NaOH)와 tartaric acid($C_4H_6O_6$)를 처리한 후 중금속 흡착특성을 평가한 결과 모든 소재에서 중금속 선택성은 Pb > Cu > Cd > Zn 순으로 나타났다. 참나무 톱밥(NaOH로 개질)은 Pb(19.36 mg $g^{-1}$)과 Cu(13.47 mg $g^{-1}$)에 대해 그리고 왕겨(tartaric acid로 개질)는 Cd(5.37 mg $g^{-1}$)과 Zn(2.24 mg $g^{-1}$)에 대해 뛰어난 흡착능을 나타내었다. SEM 분석결과 4가지 소재에서 모두 NaOH 개질 후에 표면의 불순물이 제거됨이 확인되었고 흡착표면이 매끄럽게 안정화 된 것을 관찰할 수 있었다. FT-IR 분석결과 왕겨는 1080 $cm^{-1}$에서 carbonyl group, hydroxyl group 등의 관능기가 존재함을 확인하였고 tartaric acid로 개질한 경우 1184 $cm^{-1}$와 1735 $cm^{-1}$에서 carboxylate group, carboxyl group, methylene group 등의 새로운 관능기가 생성됨을 확인하였다. 3종의 톱밥(미송, 참나무, 포플러)에 대한 FT-IR 분석결과 왕겨와 유사한 peak가 관찰되었는데 1030 $cm^{-1}$에서 carbonyl group과 hydroxyl group, 1200 $cm^{-1}$과 1700 $cm^{-1}$ 사이에서 carboxylate group, carboxyl group, methylene group 등이 이에 해당하였다. 한편 NaOH로 개질한 경우 peak에서 큰 변화를 나타내지 않았으나 흡착량이 증가한 것은 표면개질로 새로운 관능기가 생성되지는 않았으나 표면의 불순물이 제거.안정화됨으로써 흡착 표면적이 증가되었기 때문인 것으로 판단되었다.

Removal Efficiency of Toxic Heavy Metal Ions in Wastewater by Double Surface-Modified Activated Carbon

  • Adsorption capacities of toxic heavy metal ions using as-received carbon(AC), single and double surface-modified activated carbon(OAC and DSMC) in wide pH ranges are extensively evaluated. Physical and chemical properties of surface-modified activated carbons are evaluated through BET analysis, surface acidity and oxides measurements. Based oil tile adsorption isotherms of Pb, Cd and Cr ions by AC, OAC and DSMC, the adsorption amount on DSMC was obviously higher than that on the other carbons. Breakthrough behaviors of ternary metal ions in a column packed with three kinds of carbon were also characterized with respect to the variations of the influent pH and concentration. The adsorption capacity of DSMC in a fixed bed stood a favorable comparison with that of as-received carbon.
