A result of the study to determine the depth-dose distribution along the central axis of a polyethylene sphere in diameter of 30cm is described. Depth-dose distribution in the polyethylene sphere for broad beam of monoenergetic photons has been experimentally determined with thermoluminescent dosimeter as a cavity dosimeter. The conversion of dose absorbed in the LiF TLD to dose in the surrounding medium was carried out on the basis of Burlin's generalized cavity theory. Presented in graphical forms are the results obtained. The maximum absorbed doses in the sphere were observed at the depth of about 0.3cm and 0.5cm from the surface of the sphere for the gamma-rays of $^{137}$ Cs and $^{60}$ Co, respectively.
Purpose: In the case of cavity discovered by ground penetrating radar exploration, it is necessary to accurately predict the filling amount in the cavity in advance, fill the cavity sufficiently and exert strength to ensure stability and prevent ground subsidence. Method: The cavity waveform analysis method by GPR exploration and the method using the cavity shape imaging equipment were performed to measure the cavity shape with irregular size and shape of the actual cavity, and the amount of cavity filling of the injection material was calculated during rapid restoration. Results: The expected filling amount was presented by analyzing the correlation between the cavity size and the filling amount of injection material according to the cavity scale and soil depth through the method by GPR exploration and the cavity scale calculation using the cavity shaping equipment. Conclusion: The cavity scale measured by the cavity imaging equipment was found to be in the range of 20% to 40% of the cavity scale by GPR exploration. In addition, the filling amount of injection material compared to the cavity scale predicted by GPR exploration was in the range of about 60% to 140%, and the filling amount of the injection material compared to the cavity size by the cavity shaping equipment was confirmed to be about 260% to 320%.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the radiant emission characteristics of diffuse equi-lateral trapezoid groove cavity for the case of uniform surface temperature. The theoretically developed results for the apparent emissivity are presented and the values of apparent emissivity for the trapezoid groove cavity were compared with those of the V-groove cavity. In the experimental part of this study, the test models were manufactured from 100x 100x 15mm copper plates on which the equi-lateral trapezoid cavities were grooved. The inclined angles of the groove were 30,45 and 60 degrees and the ratio of groove depth to base surface width varied from 1 to 5 for each inclined angle. As a result of this work, it was found that the trapezoid groove cavity was more general form of V-groove and the apparent emissivity of trapezoid groove cavity was greater than that of V-groove cavity. The resulting equation for the apparent emissivity in the trapezoid groove cavity was valid for the angles greater than 40 degrees.
The supersonic flows around tandem cavities were investigated by two-dimensional and three-dimensional numerical simulations using the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equation with the k- ω turbulence model. The flow around a cavity is characterized as unsteady flow because of the formation and dissipation of vortices due to the interaction between the freestream shear layer and cavity internal flow, the generation of shock and expansion waves, and the acoustic effect transmitted from wake flow to upstream. The upwind TVD scheme based on the flux vector split with van Leer's limiter was used as the numerical method. Numerical calculations were performed by the parallel processing with time discretizations carried out by the 4th-order Runge- Kutta method. The aspect ratios of cavities are 3 for the first cavity and 1 for the second cavity. The ratio of cavity interval to depth is 1. The ratio of cavity width to depth is 1 in the case of three dimensional flow. The Mach number and the Reynolds number were 1.5 and $4.5{\times}10^5$, respectively. The characteristics of the dominant frequency between two- dimensional and three-dimensional flows were compared, and the characteristics of the second cavity flow due to the first cavity flow was analyzed. Both two dimensional and three dimensional flow oscillations were in the 'shear layer mode', which is based on the feedback mechanism of Rossiter's formula. However, three dimensional flow was much less turbulent than two dimensional flow, depending on whether it could inflow and outflow laterally. The dominant frequencies of the two dimensional flow and three dimensional flows coincided with Rossiter's 2nd mode frequency. The another dominant frequency of the three dimensional flow corresponded to Rossiter's 1st mode frequency.
Experimental investigation of the flow field of supersonic cavity is described. In this research, supersonic cavity is used in chemical laser system. For efficient laser, downstream flow after cavity need to be uniform and clear for pressure recovery system. In previous research, it's known that there's oscillation In cavity and is due to Mach number and L/D ratio. A strong recompression occurs at the after wall and the flow is visibly unsteady. Cavity flow in this research is of the open type, that is, length-to-depth ratio $L/D<10\;at\;M\;=\;3$. Experiment is done with pressure measurement by piezo-type sensor and visualization by Schlirern method. The time-dependent experimental result is compared with computation.

A computational analysis has been conducted to investigate the detailed flow structure inside a supersonic cavity. The free stream Mach number and Reynolds number are 1.83 and $6.02\times10^5$ respectively. In the present study, the depth and width of the cavity are changed to investigate the effect of the cavity dimensions. A fully implicit finite volume scheme is applied to solve the three-dimensional, steady, unsteady, compressible, Navier-Stokes equations. The computed results are validated with the previous experimental data available. The present computation provides reasonable predictions of the cavity flow, compared with experimental results. The obtained results show that a shock wave is generated in front of the downstream edge of the cavity and the dominant frequencies of the pressure oscillations inside the cavity were obtained.
From the geological and engineering point of view, the limestone is so rigid that it is able to act as a bedrock but if there are some unstable elements which are solubility cavity and cracking zone in the ground, the settlement and bearing capacity of a structure will be required to long-term stability investigations and countermeasures about those problems. When comparing the allowable bearing capacity, the results of Bell's method and the Bowles' method are similar but the results of Hoek-Brown's method are very larger than the others. For weathered limestone, stability is changed by size and depth of the cavity of limestone, but soft and hard rock are stable regardless of size and depth of the cavity.
Purpose: Ground subsidence due to cavity can bring about various problems, such as casualties, decrease of the safety of the structures, and indirect social costs. Therefore, ground subsidence should be prevented through the exploration and recovery of the cavity under the pavements. Method: In this study, GPR exploration method was carried out on both actual roadway and mock-up site to compensate for the problems caused by excavation and restoration process. Result: This study compared the cavity scales obtained from GPR exploration results and the direct excavation of the identified cavity. It was confirmed that the predicted soil depth by GPR exploration was similar to the identified soil depth, but the predicted cavity scale by GPR exploration overestimated the longitudinal and cross-sectional widths compared to the identified cavity scale. Conclusion: Based on the correlation between the predicted cavity scales by GPR exploration, it is possible to qualitatively estimate the cavity scales using the empirical formula proposed in this study.

The underground cavity known as one of the reasons of ground surface settlement is a discontinuous character. Therefore, it is limited to analyze with continuum analysis. In this research, The spherical underground cavity affecting the ground surface settlement is studied with Discrete Element Method. Ground properties, depth and diameter of the spherical underground cavity are chosen as factors of the spherical underground cavity and the effect of the each factor variations on the ground surface settlement is analyzed. Relative depth to the diameter of the spherical underground cavity is also studied. The result of the research suggests the basis of underground cavity collapse prediction and standard of support.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the performance of swirl combustion chamber diesel engine by changing the jet passage area and its angle, the depth and shape of the piston top cavity(main chamber). The performance of diesel engine with newly changed swirl combustion chamber was tested through the experimental conditions as engine speed, load and injection timing etc. The test results were compared and analyzed. The rate of fuel consumption was affected significantly by the jet passage area at the high speed and load, by the depth of the piston top cavity at the low speed and load. The exhaust smoke density and exhaust gas temperature depended sensitively on variation of the injection timing rather than the shape of the combustion chamber within the experimental conditions.
