  • Hydrogen sulfide is well-known to exhibit anti-inflammatory and cytoprotective activities, and also has protective effects in the liver. This study aimed to examine the protective effect of hydrogen sulfide in rats with hepatic encephalopathy, which was induced by mild bile duct ligation. In this rat model, bile ducts were mildly ligated for 26 days. Rats were treated for the final 5 days with sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS). NaHS ($25{\mu}mol/kg$), 0.5% sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, or silymarin (100 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally once per day for 5 consecutive days. Mild bile duct ligation caused hepatotoxicity and inflammation in rats. Intraperitoneal NaHS administration reduced levels of aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase, which are indicators of liver disease, compared to levels in the control mild bile duct ligation group. Levels of ammonia, a major causative factor of hepatic encephalopathy, were also significantly decreased. Malondialdehyde, myeloperoxidase, catalase, and tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ levels were measured to confirm antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. N-Methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) receptors with neurotoxic activity were assessed for subunit NMDA receptor subtype 2B. Based on these data, NaHS is suggested to exhibit hepatoprotective effects and guard against neurotoxicity through antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions.

  • The 46,XX testicular disorder of sex development (DSD) is a rare condition in which 46,XX individuals develop testicular differentiation and virilization. Translocation of the sex-determining region Y (SRY) onto the X chromosome is the main cause of 46,XX testicular DSD, whereas dysregulation between pro-testis and pro-ovarian genes can induce SRY-negative 46,XX testicular DSD. Nuclear receptor subfamily 5 group A member 1 (NR5A1), a nuclear receptor transcription factor, plays an essential role in gonadal development in XY and XX embryos. Herein, we report the first Korean case of SRY-negative 46,XX testicular DSD with a heterozygous NR5A1 p.Arg92Trp variant. The patient presented with a small penis, bifid scrotum, and bilateral undescended testes. Whole exome sequencing revealed a heterozygous missense variant (c.274C>T) of NR5A1. Our case highlights that NR5A1 gene variants need to be considered important causative factors of SRY-negative non-syndromic 46,XX testicular DSD.

  • The Purpose of this study was to estimate relative importance among the causative factors o( arch length discrepancy(ALD) and Possibility of prediction of the ALD in the mixed dentition. The sample consisted of the casts of the 142 young adults who had no abnormal muscle function, no skeletal abnormalities and Class I molar relationship. We classified the sample by gender and the extent of ALD, and measured mesiodistal diameters of each tooth and the dimensions of the dental arch. The computerized statistical analyses was carried out with SPSS win program. The results were as follows ; 1. Most of the variables of spacing group and some variables of dental arch dimension of crowding group were significantly different between genders. But in normal group, there were few differences. 2. In male crowding and female spacing group, mainly measurements of tooth dimension were significantly different from those of normal group. 3. In male spacing and female crowding group, measurements of dental arch dimension were significantly different from those of normal group. 4. The measurements of dimension of dental arch were highly correlated with ALD in correlation analysis and factor analysis. 5. Prediction equations for adult's ALDs by means of what can be measured in the mixed dentition(mesiodistal dimensions of incisors and first molar, intermolar width and arch length) showed R square from $63\%$ to $80\%$.

  • The endogenous neurotoxin, 1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (salsolinol), has been considered a potential causative factor for the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). In the present study, we examined the pattern of human Cu,Zn-superoxide dismutase (SOD) modification elicited by salsolinol. When Cu,Zn-SOD was incubated with salsolinol, some protein fragmentation and some higher molecular weight aggregates were occurred. Salsolinol led to inactivation of Cu,Zn-SOD in a concentration-dependent manner. Free radical scavengers and catalase inhibited the salsolinol-mediated Cu,Zn-SOD modificaiton. Exposure of Cu,Zn-SOD to salsolinol led also to the generation of protein carbonyl compounds. The deoxyribose assay showed that hydroxyl radicals were generated during the oxidation of salsolinol in the presence of Cu,Zn-SOD. Therefore, the results indicate that free radical may play a role in the modification and inactivation of Cu,Zn-SOD by salsolinol.

  • The occurrence of neurologic symptom, for example cauda equina syndrome or disc rupture after Chuna treatment seems to be an uncommon event considering the large number of Chuna treatment performed. We experienced a woman who developed sudden complication after lumbar Chuna treatment. Patients in spinal hernation undergone Chuna treatment can be the causative factor in neurological symptom and must be considered in each case. Therefore, physicans and patients should be aware that neurological complication may occur as a result of lumba Chuna treatment.

  • The occurrence of neurologic symptoms after cervical manipulation(Chuna treatment) seems to be an uncommon event considering the large number of manipulations performed. The precise incidence is unknown, for only patients with serious complications seek medical care. We recently experienced a 3D-year-old woman who developed sudden neurologic complications after cervical Chuna treatment by a nonprofessional therapist. Whether the manipulation is the major causative factor in the subsequent stroke can be disputable and must be considered in each case. Physicians and patients, however, should be aware that cerebrovascular accidents may occur as a result of cervical manipulation.

  • We examined the relationship between plasma folate and total homocysteine(Hcy) levels and the distribution of plasma folate and Hcy levels from 204 Korean adults(113 men and 91 women aged between 20yr and 69yr). Plasma folate levels were significantly lower in men(12.2nmol/L) than in women(14.6nmol/L) after controlling for smoking and drinking(p<0.05). Plasma Hcy levels were significantly higher in men(13.9$\mu$mol/L) than in women(11.8$\mu$mol/L) after controlling and drinking. Plasma Hcy levels were more more strongly correlated with plasma folate in women(${\gamma}$=-0.321, p<0.05) than in men(${\gamma}$=-0.202, p<0.05), but the difference between men and women was no longer statistically significant controlling for plasma folate concentration. Prevalence of mild homocysteinemia(plama Hcy>15$\mu$mol/L) was greatest among subjects with lowest folate status. These results indicate a strong association between plasma Hcy concentration and folate status and the poor folate status is the strong causative factor of mild homocysteinemia. • The endogenous neurotoxin, 1-methyl-6,7-dihydroxy-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (salsolinol), has been considered a potential causative factor for the pathogenesis of Parkinson's disease (PD). In this study, we examined oxidative modification of neurofilament-L (NF-L) induced by salsolinol. When disassembled NF-L was incubated with salsolinol, the aggregation of protein was increased with the concentration of sasolinol. The formation of carbonyl compound was obtained in salsolinol-mediated NF-L aggregates. This process was protected by free radical scavengers, such as N-acetyl-L-cysteine and glutathione. These results suggest that the aggregation of NF-L is mediated by salsolinol via the generation of free radicals. We also investigated the effects of copper ion on salsolinol-mediated NF-L modification. In the presence of copper ions, salsolinol enhanced the modification of NF-L. We suggest that salsolinol might be related to abnormal aggregation of NF-L which may be involved in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases and related disorders.

  • Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) is the causative agent of chronic gastritis and the single most important factor in peptic ulcer disease, however, the pathogenetic mechanisms underlying H, pylori infection are not well understood. Futhermore, there is a strong association between H. pylori infection and gastric cancer. Various diagnostic methods for detecting H. pylori infection are available. These can be divided into invasive methods, requiring endoscopy, and non-invasive tests, mainly 13C-urea breath tests and serologic detection of antibodies. Rapid urease test is the most recommendable endoscopic test for the diagnosis of H. pylori infection, presently. CLO test kit is the represent of rapid urease test kits. The principles of CLO test kit is that hydrolysis of urea by urease Is detected by a dye indicators showing a color change. Our device is used same principle but we improved the reaction time is more faster and positive color change is more distinctive from the color of the negative specimen. So, this kit is more reliable because it response faster and accuracy.
