  • The water-soluble conjugated polymer with fluorescence quenching as a result of electrostatic interaction and aggregation was synthesized through Suzuki polymerization. The absorption and emission of anionic polymer (a-PFP) is blue shifted as compared with cationic polymer (c-PFP) although getting same backbone, and the absolute PL quantum efficiency of a-PFP in water is over 90% due to good solubility in aqueous solution. We anticipate that the fluorescence quenching of anionic and cationic polymers, with same conjugated backbone, could be shown in aqueous solution.

  • Polymerization of vinyl monomers is promoted by thianthrene cation radical as a part of our research concerning the reactions of various agents with readily isolable, yet highly reactive species and elucidate the biological activity. Thianthrene cation radical initiated the homopolymerization and copolymerization of styrene and ethyl vinyl ether. The polymerization yields decreased as the concentration of phenylacetylene or diphenylethylene increased. Such polymereization by cationic thianthrene radical could provide some clues for the reaction in living animals. Comments on possible polymerization mechanisms were suggested.

  • The controlled/living cationic polymerization of $\alpha$-methylstyrene (${\alpha}MeSt$) and sequential block copolymerization of isobutylene (IB) with ${\alpha}MeSt$ were achieved using 2-chloro-2,4,4-trimethylpentane (TMPCl)/titanium tetrachloride ($TiCl_4$)/titanium isopropoxide ($Ti(OiPr)_4$)/2,6-ditert-butylpyridine (DtBP) initiating system in $CH_3Cl$/hexane(50/50 v/v) solvent mixture at $-80^{\circ}C$. The polymerization rate decreased with increasing $[Ti(OiPr)_4]/[TiCl_4]$ ratio in the homopolymerization of ${\alpha}MeSt$. The effects of $[Ti(OiPr)_4]/[TiCl_4]$ ratios and $PIB^+$ molecular weight on the polymerization rate and blocking efficiency were also investigated. Well-defined poly(isobutylene-b-$\alpha$-methylstyrene)s were demonstrated by $^1H$-NMR and triple detection SEC; refractive index (RI), multiangle laser light scattering (MALLS) and ultraviolet (UV) detectors. Blocking efficiencies for the poly(isobutylene-b-$\alpha$-methylstyrene)s of almost 100% were obtained when ${\alpha}MeSt$ was induced by PIB's of $M_n\;{\geq}\;41000$ at $[Ti(OiPr)_4]/[TiCl_4]=1$. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) of the block copolymers showed two glass transition temperatures, thereby demonstrating microphase separation.

  • Poly (N-vinylcarbazole) was obtained spontaneously by 1,1,2,2-tetracyanocyclopropylstyrene(1) in polar solvents such as dichloromethane and acetonitrile at room temperature. The polymerization reactions were faster in more polar solvent and were not proceeded in less polar solvents such as chloroform and diethyl ether. The formation of poly (N-vinylcarbazole) was explained by bond-forming initiation theory, in which the initiating species are zwitterionic tetramethylene intermediates.

  • The effect of novel N-crotyl-N,N-dimethyl-4-methylanilinium hexafluoroantimonate (CMH) curing agent as a thermal latent initiator on thermal behaviors, rheological properties, and thermal stability of diglycidylether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) epoxy cationic system was investigated. From DSC measurements of DGEBA/CMH system, it was shown that this system exhibits an excellent thermal latent characteristic at a given temperature. The conversion and conversion rate of DGEBA/CMH system increased with increasing the concentration of initiator, due to high activity of CMH. Rheological properties of the system were investigated under isothermal condition using a rheometer The gelation time was obtained from the analysis of storage modulus (G'), loss modulus (G"), and damping factor (tan $\delta$). As a result, the reduction of gelation time was affected by high curing temperature and concentration of CMH, resulting in high degree of network formation in cationic polymerization, due to difference of activity. The thermal stability of the cured epoxy resin was discussed in terms of the activation energy for decomposition and thermal factors determined from TGA measurements.ents.

  • $Bu_3Sn$-endded poly(vinyl)s with biological activity were obtained by the radical polymerization of vinyl monomers using thianthrene cation radical/$^nBu_3H$. Thianthrene cation and stannyl radicals promoted the homopolymerization and copolymerization of styrene and ethyl vinyl ether having number average molecular weights of 2000-3100. Tributyltin hydride functions as a chain transfer agent. Such polymereization by cationic thianthrene and stannyl radicals could provide some clues for the biological reaction in living animals. Plausible polymerization mechanisms were suggested.

  • Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of a cationic initiator, 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) (AIBA). The Stober method has been adopted to coat silica on the surface of these cationic particles. Negatively charged silica precursors were coated onto cationic particle surfaces by electronic interaction. During the coating process, hollow particles were directly obtained by dissolution of PMMA.
