To check the feasibility of SMART(Steam Methane Advanced Reforming Technology) system, an experimental investigation was performed. A fluidized bed reactor of diameter 0.052m was operated cyclically up to 10th cycle, alternating between reforming and regeneration conditions. FCR-4 catalyst was used as the reforming catalyst and calcined limestone(domestic, from Danyang) was used as the $CO_2$ absorbent. Hydrogen concentration of 98.2% on a dry basis was reached at $650^{\circ}C$ for the first cycle. This value is much higher than $H_2$ concentration of 73.6% in the reformer of conventional SMR (steam methane reforming) condition. The hydrogen concentration decreased because the $CO_2$ capture capacity decreased as the number of cycles increased. However, the average hydrogen concentration at 10th cycle was 82.5% and this value is also higher than that of SMR. Based on these results, we could conclude that the SMART system can replace SMR system to generate pure hydrogen without HTS (high tempeature shift), LTS (low temperature shift) and $CO_2$ separation process.
In this work, we investigate the growth behavior of silicon oxide nanowires via a solid-liquid-solid process. Silicon oxide nanowires were synthesized at $1000^{\circ}C$ in an Ar and $H_2$ mixed gas. A pre-oxidized silicon wafer and a nickel film are used as the substrate and catalyst, respectively. We propose two distinctive growth modes for the silicon oxide nanowires that both act as a unique solid-liquid-solid growth process. We named the two growth mechanisms "grounded-growth" and "branched-growth" modes to characterize their unique solid-liquid-solid growth behavior. The two growth modes were classified by the generation site of the nanowires. The grounded-growth mode in which the grown nanowires are generated from the substrate and the branchedgrowth mode where the nanowires are grown from the side of the previously grown nanowires or at the metal catalyst drop attached at the tip of the nanowire stem.

Advanced (Chemical) oxidation processes (AOP) differ from most conventional ones in that hydroxyl radical(OH.) is considered to be the primary oxidant. Hydroxyl radicalcan react non-selectively with a great number of organic and inorganic chemicals. The typical rate constants of true hydroxyl radical reactions are in the range of between 109 to 1012 sec-1. Many processes are possible to generate hydroxyl radical. These include physical and chemical methods and their combinations. Physical means involves the use of high energy radiation such as gamma ray, electron beam, and acoustic wave. Under an applied high energy radiation, water molecules can be decomposed to yield hydroxyl radicals or aqueous electrons. Chemical means include the use of conventional oxidants such as hydrogen peroxide and ozone, two of the most efficient oxidants in the presence of promoter or catalyst. Hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst such as divalent iron ions can readily produce hydroxyl radicals. Ozone in the presence of specific chemical species such as OH- or hydrogen peroxide, can also generate hydroxyl radicals. Finally the combination of chemical and physical means can also yield hydroxyl radicals. Hydrogen peroxide in the presence of acoustic wave or ultra violet beam can generate hydroxyl radicals. The principles for hydroxyl radical generation will be discussed. Recent case studied of AOP for water treatment and other environmental of applications will be presented. These include the treatment of contaminated soils using electro-Fenton, lechate treatment with conventional Ponton, treatment of coal for sulfur removal using sonochemical and the treatment of groundwater with enhanced sonochemical processes.
The electrochemical chlorine evolution reaction (CER) is an important electrochemical reaction and has been widely used in chlor-alkali electrolysis, on-site generation of ClO-, and Cl2-mediated electrosynthesis. Although precious metal-based mixed metal oxides (MMOs) have been used as CER catalysts for more than half a century, they intrinsically suffer from a selectivity problem between the CER and parasitic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Hence, the design of selective CER electrocatalysts is critically important. In this review, we provide an overview of the fundamental issues related to the electrocatalysis of the CER and design strategies for selective CER electrocatalysts. We present experimental and theoretical methods for assessing the active sites of MMO catalysts and the origin of the scaling relationship between the CER and the OER. We discuss kinetic analysis methods to understand the kinetics and mechanisms of CER. Next, we summarize the design strategies for new CER electrocatalysts that can enhance the reactivity of MMO-based catalysts and overcome their scaling relationship, which include the doping of MMO catalysts with foreign metals and the development of non-precious metal-based catalysts and atomically dispersed metal catalysts.

Ceramic filter was prepared using cordierite powder and it was coated with $V_2O_5$ catalyst by vacuum impregnation method. The filter had the apparent porosity of 58 %, the compressive strength of 10 MPa and the pressure drop of 1200 Pa at the face velocity of 5 cm/see and 400$^{\circ}C$. $NO_x$ removal efficiency of only $V_2O_5$ coated on cordierite filter showed the removal efficiency of 80 %, and it was improved up to 90 % by increasing specific surface area of filter elements from the acid treatment. The high surface area is due to the removal of Mg and Al ions from the silicate structure and subsequent generation of free amorphous silicate on the surface of the cordierite.

The recycling technology by the catalytic conversion is one of the most promising techniques for the $CO_2$ treatment of coal burning power plant flue gases. The conversion of $CO_2$ to valuable product of $CH_4$ can be used as a fuel to run the turbine for electricity generation. Through this technique, the amount of coal needed for the combustion in a gas turbine can be reduced as well as $CO_2$ emissions. Therefore, a series of catalysts based on cerium oxide doped with copper, nickel and manganese were prepared by impregnation method. From the characterization analysis, it showed that the prepared catalysts calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ were amorphous in structure with small particle size in the range below 100 nm. Meanwhile, the catalyst particles were aggregated and agglomerated with higher surface area of $286.70m^2g^{-1}$. By increasing the calcination temperature of catalysts to $1000^{\circ}C$, the particle sizes were getting bigger (> 100 nm) and having moderate crystallinity with lower surface area ($67.90m^2g^{-1}$). From the catalytic testing among all the prepared catalysts, Mn/Ce-75/$Al_2O_3$ calcined at $400^{\circ}C$ was assigned as the most potential catalyst which gave 49.05% and 56.79% $CO_2$ conversion at reaction temperature of $100^{\circ}C$ and $200^{\circ}C$, respectively.

Electrochemical reduction of thionyl chloride has been carried out at glassy carbon and molybdenum electrodes, the surface of which is modified by binuclear tetradentate schiff base Co(II), Ni(II),Cu(II) and Fe(II) complexes. The catalyst molecules of transition metal(II) complexes were adsorbed on the electrode surface and reduced thionyl chloride resulting in a generation of oxidized catalyst molecules. There was an optimum concentration for each catalyst compound. The catalytic effects of SOCl$_2$ reduction were larger on glassy carbon electrodes compared to molybdenum electrodes and enhancements in reduction current of up to 120${\%}$ at the glassy carbon electrodes. The reduction currents of thionyl chloride were increased and the reduction potentials were shifted to the negative potential when scan rates became faster. The reduction of thionyl chloride was proceed to diffusion controlled reaction.

A novel ozonizer has been developed using a high frequency surface discharge and a high purity Ti-Si-Al ceramic catalyst as its dielectric component. A cylindrical thin compound ceramic catalyst in reactor is adhered to inside of the film-like outside electrode. And, when experiment condition are oxygen gas temperature of 20 [$^{\circ}C$], inner reactor pressure of 1.6 atm 600[Hz] and flow late of 2[l/min]. the ozonizer can easily produce ozone concentration(50~60[g/㎥]for oxygen) and power efficiency(180[g/kWh]for oxygen) without using a special enrichment means. At 2[l/min], 20[$^{\circ}C$], 1.6[atm], 600[Hz]and 40[W], the result of simulation to gas temperature of reactor using general code Phoenics, the maximum temperature of reactor was 132[$^{\circ}C$]in reactor. Ant the result electric field simulation of Ti-Si-Al type reactor using general code Flux 2D, maximum electric field was 0.131E.08[V/m].

A multi-perforated tube is generally installed between the muffler inlet and in front of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalysts in the integrated urea-SCR muffler system in order to disperse the urea-water solution spray uniformly and to make better use of the SCR catalyst, which would result in an increase nitrogen oxide ($NO_x$) reduction efficiency and a decrease in the ammonia slip. The effects of the multi-perforated tube orifice area ratios on the internal flow characteristics were investigated analytically by using a general-purpose commercial software package. From the results, it was clarified that the multi-perforated tube geometry sensitively affected the generation of the bulk swirling motion inside the plenum chamber set in front of the SCR catalyst and to the uniformity index of the velocity distribution produced at the inlet of the catalyst. To verify the analytical results, engine tests were carried out in the ESC and ETC modes. Results of these tests indicated that the larger flow model in the longitudinal direction showed the highest NOx reduction efficiency, which was a good agreement with the analytical results.

Recently light emitting diodes (LEDs) have been expected as the new generation light sources because of their advantages such as small size, long lifetime and energy-saving. GaN, as a wide band gap material, is widely used as a material of LEDs and GaN nanorods are the one of the most widely investigated nanostructure which has advantages for the light extraction of LEDs and increasing the active area by making the cylindrical core-shell structure. Lately GaN nanorods are fabricated by various techniques, such as selective area growth, vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) technique. But these techniques have some disadvantages. Selective area growth technique is too complicated and expensive to grow the rods. And in the case of VLS technique, GaN nanorods are not vertically aligned well and the metal catalyst may act as the impurity. So we just tried to grow the GaN nanorods on Si substrate without catalyst to get the vertically well aligned nanorods without impurity. First we deposited the AlN buffer layer on Si substrate which shows more vertical growth mode than sapphire substrate. After the buffer growth, we flew trimethylgallium (TMGa) as the III group source and ammonia as the V group source. And during the GaN growth, we kept the ammonia flow stable and periodically changed the flow rate of TMGa to change the growth mode of the nanorods. Finally, as the optimization, we changed the various growth conditions such as the growth temperature, the working pressure, V/III ratio and the doping level. And we are still in the process to reduce the diameter of the nanorods and to extend the length of the nanorods simultaneously. In this study, we focused on the shape changing of GaN nanorods with different growth conditions. So we confirmed the shape of the nanorods by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and carried out the Photoluminescence (PL) measurement and x-ray diffraction (XRD) to examine the crystal quality difference between samples. Detailed results will be discussed.
