  • Catalogers have been reporting the ways they use the Internet for several years, but as yet there has been little evaluation done to determine for which areas of cataloging the Internet is a valuable tool and for which areas it is not as useful. A survey was conducted in an effort to elicit this information. The responses indicated four areas in which catalogers use the Internet : searching the OPACs of other libraries, communicating with colleagues, accessing online cataloging documentation and publications, and authority work. Some catalogers also related processes for which they have found the Internet to not be efficient.

This study showed that the most important aspect of usability in Connexion lay in the experience of information retrieval system. Also, it showed there are seventeen usability problems to be improved in Connexion. Needless to say, it is most important to note that usability is not an exclusive goal of such an integrated cataloging and metadata system. Other goals such as quality of catalogs, and the reliability of its cataloging and metadata system are equally its concern. This study also suggested more testing on diverse cataloging systems and specific user groups, especially catalogers.

  • The Creation of bibliographic records for conference publication is difficult for catalogers and the records are difficult for patrons to use. We have found many difficulties in cataloging conference publications, because of the insufficiency and ambiguity of the cataloging rule. This study deals with the characteristics, type and data elements of conference publications, and the problems of the choice of heading and the creation of bibliographic records in the USMARC and KORMARC.
