The interaction between polymers and surfactants was investigated by means of rheological and surface tension measurements. The polymers used in this study were acrylates/$C_{10-30}$ alkyl acrylate crosspolymer (AC) and ammonium acryloyldimethyltaurate/VP copolymer (AV). And the surfactants were PEG-40 hydrogenated castor oil (HC) and polysorbate 60 (P60). HC and P60 made the micelles intervening between AC polymers, resulting in the increase of viscosity. However, HC showed a similar behavior over the wider range of surfactant concentration than P60. Regarding of surface tensions in the same range of surfactant concentration, AC/HC solution showed the area of increasing surface tension with surfactant concentration in contrast to the AC/P60 solution showing no increasing area. It is assumed that the micelles between AC/HC were formed so cooperatively and strongly that the surfactants located at the surface originally moved to the micelles.
The regional bio-wastes available in abundance in India were converted into porous carbon by heat treatment at different temperatures from $650-950^{\circ}C$. The wood retain shapes after pyrolysis though shrinkage occured both in axial and radial directions. The shrinkage in radial direction was found to be more than in axial direction in all woods. The density of woods and chars from these at a given temperature has been found to follow linear relationship. Chars were steam activated at temperature $700-800^{\circ}C$ for different times between 45-240 min. Both the temperature and time of activation with steam has a profound effect on surface area. Chars from softwoods like bagasse and castor oil plant were activated at lower temperature, i.e. $700-750^{\circ}C$ whereas hard wood chars have to be activated at higher temperature around $800^{\circ}C$. The morphology of wood as well as of chars has been studied by SEM. The comparison of the two showed that the nature of porosity in chars depends on precursor morphology, nature and physical state of wood and presence of inorganic compounds in the wood. Hard wood results in cross inter connected pores while softwood leads to fibriller structure. The present studies show that activated carbon with reasonably good surface area (${\sim}1000m^2/gm$) can be prepared from soft wood bio-wastes like bagasse and castor oil plant, while surface area ${\sim}1370m^2/gm$ was achieved from hard wood bio waste of pine wood.
In this study, sebacic acid made from castor oil was used as monomer with isophthalic acid and glycols for polyester polyol synthesis. Polyurethane adhesive was synthesized from the various polyester polyol. From the result of adhesion strength test, polyester polyol made from sebacic acid showed better adhesive force than that of adipic acid due to higher cohesive energy. Branched glycol containing methyl group represented better adhesion than linear glycol. In the chain extender, adhesion strength increased going from PG, EG, BD. From the measurement of TGA, BD showed the best heat stability, and followed by PG, EG. Glass transition temperature increased in the order PG, EG, BD by the result of DMA.
Hydrated liquid crystalline vesicles containing a high content of ceramide were prepared by constituting an optimal composition in which ceramides can be mutually self-associated with phospholipid and cholesterol. From the result of manufacturing various vesicles with different component composition, when the edge activator sodium deoxycholate (SDOC) and the solubilizer PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil (HCO 60) were mixed to form vesicles, the smallest nano-sized particles were produced and the vesicle dispersion solution was weakly acidic and maintained the most stable state. In addition, it was confirmed through polarized light microscopy and thermal analysis that the addition of SDOC and HCO 60 had an effect on the inhibition of crystallinity of lipid components such as ceramide. The stability of the vesicle dispersion solution was maintained without change in appearance and viscosity even after long-term storage at high temperature for eight weeks.
To investigate the effect of nonionic surfactant and emulsion stabilizer on O/W emulsions, various emulsion formulations with different types of nonionic surfactants and emulsion stabilizers were prepared and their rheological properties were compared. In this study, polysorbate 60 (Tween 60), PEG-60 hydrogenated castor oil (HCO 60), octyldodeceth-16 (OD 16), and ceteareth-6 olivate (Olivem 800) were used as hydrophilic nonionic surfactants, whereas cetyl alcohol, glyceryl monostearate, and stearic acid as emulsion stabilizers. Phase separation occurred only in the emulsion formulation with octyldodeceth-16 and all other emulsion formulations maintained a stable phase. The viscosity, hardness, and creaminess of emulsion formulation using a mixture of ceteareth-6 olivate and cetyl alcohol were the highest, and the emulsified droplet size was also the largest. These results are due to the formation of a network structure texture with the development of a large amount of liquid crystal in the O/W emulsion. In this formulation, the value of elastic modulus was large and the thixotropic behavior, in which the viscosity varies with the history of external force, was observed.
It was to test the stimulability of cosmetic which contains scalp extracted Leuconostoc mesenteroides when it's patched to skin and to investigate safety when it's used as skincare products. Scalp toner that contains L. mesenteroides extracts 1%, and PEG-60 Hydrogenated Castor Oil 0.6% was made and also scalp lotion containing L. mesenteroides extract 3%, Glyceryl Stearate 0.7%. Through the stimulant test of each toner and lotion by patch-testing 32 and 33 participants' backs, safety was verified by the result. Considering the result of antioxidant, anti-allergic, and anti-inflammatory properties of L. mesenteroids reported in previous studies, cosmetics containing these are safe for skin at low concentrations and worth for furthur research as non-stimmulative when used at other cosmetics.
Castor oil cake is widely used as a raw material for organic fertilizers (OF) in Korea. Compared to other fertilizer raw materials, it is highly dependent on imports. In terms of replacing raw materials, dehydrated food waste powder (FDP) and castor oil cake have similar nutritional content, and if 30% is replaced, about 20% of the raw material cost can be saved. However, few studies on the effects on crop growth and soil properties when organic fertilizer and dry food waste powder are mixed and applied to the soil have been reported. The effects of an organic fertilizer made by mixing the commercial available organic fertilizer with dehydrated food waste (OF + FDP) on soil properties and the growth of two types of leafy vegetables (lettuce and young radish) were evaluated and compared with the performance of OF. The fresh weights of lettuce and young radish were the highest with OF amendment and stood at 114.3 and 119.0 g·plant-1, respectively. These were followed by OF + FDP amendment, which produced 103.1 and 109.6 g·plant-1, respectively. Compared to the control, OF and OF + FDP increased the lettuce fresh weights by about 69% and 52%, respectively, while the fresh weights of the radish were increased by about 223% and 207%, respectively. The soil pH, EC, total carbon content, and organic matter content in OF and OF + FDP increased. The mixture of dehydrated food waste powder and organic fertilizers is expected to improve soil quality and facilitate stable production of crops and contribute to the substitution of imported organic fertilizer raw materials.
The cure behavior of epoxy resin with a conventional amide-type hardener(HD) was investigated in the presence of castor oil(CO), cashew nut shell liquid(CNSL) and CNSL-formaldehyde resin(CFR) by using a dynamic differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The activation energy of curing reaction was also calculated based on the non-isothermal DSC thermograms at various heating rates. An one-stage curing was noted in the case of epoxy resin filled with CO, while the epoxy resin with CNSL and CFR showed a two-stage curing process. A competitive cure reaction was noted for the epoxy resin/CNSL(or CFR)/HD blends. In the absence of HD, the CFR showed lower values of curing enthalpy than that of CNSL. The activation energy of epoxy resin curing increased with increasing the CNSL and CFR loading.
The influence of emulsion type of tegafur, an oral anticancer agent, on lymphatic transport was studied in rats. The water-in-oil-type of emulsion and the oil-in-water-type emulsion of tegafur each in 50 mg, calculated in terms of tegafur, were prepared by adding tegafur aqueous solution to sesame oil containing hydrogenated castor oil following ultrasonic treatment, and then the prepared emulsions and aqueous solution as a comparative formulation were administered orally to rats (50 mg/5 ml/kg). The concentration levels of tegafur in plasma of femoral artery and lymph from thoracic duct cannula were measured simultaneously along a time course after administration and the pharmacokinetic parameters were investigated. At the same time, we examined the above described factors of 5-FU which is known as an active metabolite of tegafur. In comparison with tegafur solution, AUC and mean residence time of plasma tegafur were significantly increased in w/o-emulsion but significantly decreased in o/w-emulsion. Lymph flow rates were similar in both solution and w/o-emulsion but half in o/w-emulsion. Ratios between area under the lymph and plasma concentration time curves were always less than 1 reflecting the passive lymphatic delivery after oral administration of the prepared tegafur emulsions, but those to the 5-FU in the case of w/o-emulsion were more than 1. These results suggested that lymphatic delivery of tegafur by w/o-emulsion was more effective than that by o/w-emulsion due to its differences of formation ability of chylomicrons.

This research was conducted to improve availability of agricultural by-products, national natural resources that could be used as fertilizer source, by estimating the amount of production and collecting main contents of fertilizer substances from previous studies and data, in order to be used as basic data to investigate national resources that could be used as alternatives for imported oil-cakes in the future. Conversion factor was used to estimate annual production of agricultural by-products for main 34 crop types in 2018. For total agricultural by-products, rice straws accounted at 50.3% for the highest proportion, followed by 8.7% of rice husks, showing that by-products from rice harvest accounted at 59.0% for all by-products. Further, there were listed the contents of fertilizer substances (nitrogen, phosphoric acid, potash) in 40 types of by-products from agricultural areas. The average contents of nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash in agricultural by-products were 1.43%, 0.59%, and 1.90%, respectively. As a result of estimating the annual nitrogen supply amount from 26 agricultural by-products in 2018, it was found that it could supply 44,911 tons of nitrogen. The investigated by-products contained fertilizer substances such as nitrogen, phosphoric acid, and potash, but the contents were lower compared to castor oil-cake used as main component of organic fertilizer. Therefore, resource management plan needs to be established for efficient use of by-products because time, location, and nutrient content of agricultural by-product production were extremely different. Research on fertilizer and manure using agricultural by-products need to be conducted to develop and distribute alternatives for imported oil-cakes.
