  • This paper reports the effect of a refractory crucible type on the microstructure of duplex stainless steel (DSS) cast with the addition of gadolinium using air-induction melting. Grade 4A DSSs with 1 wt% of gadolinium (Gd) were fabricated in various crucibles including alumina ($Al_2O_3$), magnesia (MgO), calcia (CaO) coated with yttria ($Y_2O_3$) and graphite. The standard free energies of the formation of calcium and yttrium oxide were lower than those of gadolinium oxide and other crucible elements based oxide. The yield of Gd in DSS using $Al_2O_3$, MgO, CaO-coated $Y_2O_3$ and graphite was 5, 19, 83 and 96%, respectively. As Gd yield increased, the amount of Gd-based inclusions increased, the size of the inclusions were reduced, and the inclusions became evenly distributed.

  • CD4MCU duplex stainless steel with gadolinium was fabricated as a neutron absorbing material by the air induction melting method. The gadolinium formed intermetallic compounds of Cu-Gd-Fe. There were no significant differences in hardness or ultimate tensile strength between experimental alloys. With the addition of gadolinium the yield strength of the cast alloy significantly increased, from $478.8{\pm}11.6$ to $514.2{\pm}29.9MPa$, whereas elongation of the cast alloy decreased with the addition of gadolinium, from $26.0{\pm}7.1$ to $7.0{\pm}2.5%$ due to the formation of gadolinium based intermetallic compounds.

  • To elucidate the effects of alloying elements on the characteristics of microstructure and high temperature oxidation of cast austenitic stainless steel, a thermodynamic calculation, a cyclic oxidation test, a X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscopy-back scattered electron, a electron probe microanalysis were conducted. The thermodynamic calculation for the effect of vanadium (V) addition on the formation of various precipitates leads to a decrease of chromium (Cr)-rich $M_{23}C_6$ carbides due to the formation of M (C, N) carbo-nitrides containing V and / or niobium (Nb). The V added alloy increased the resistance to high temperature oxidation due to a decrease of Cr-depleted zone deteriorating the oxidation resistance and due to the V-enriched oxide layer formed in inner oxide layer blocking the outward transport of cations.

  • The substitution of cooling method from water quenching to air cooling after solution heat treatment was aimed for the development of a convenient and economical heat treatment process of duplex stainless steels without deterioration of mechanical and corrosion resistant properties for the industry. In order to achieve this goal, the mechanical properties and corrosion properties of a ASTM A890-4A duplex stainless steel were systematically investigated as functions of casting condition and cooling method after solution heat treatment. A 3-stepped sand mold and a permanent Y-block mold were used to check the effects of solidification structure and cooling rate after solution heat treatment. The microstructural characteristics such as the ferrite/austenite phase ratio and the precipitation behavior of ${\sigma}$ phase and carbides were investigated by combined analysis of OM and SEM-EDX with an aid of TTT diagram. Hardness and tension test were performed to evaluate the mechanical properties. Impact property at $-40^{\circ}C$ and corrosion resistance were also examined to check the possibility of the industrial application of this basic study. Throughout this investigation, air-cooling method was proved to effectively substitute for water-quenching process after the solution heat treatment, when the duplex stainless steel was sand mold cast with a thickness below 15 mm or permanent mold cast with a thickness below 20 mm.

  • Structural degradations are often experienced on the components of nuclear power plants in reactor pressure vessels (RPV) and steam generators (SG) when these components are exposed to high temperature and high pressure for a long period of time. Such conditions result in the change of microstructures and of mechanical properties of materials, which requires an evaluation of the safeguards related to structural integrity. In a primary reactor cooling system (RCS), a dissimilar weld zone exists between cast stainless steel (CF8M) in a pipe and low-alloy steel (SA508 cl.3) in a nozzle. Thermal aging is observed in CF8M as the RCS is exposed for a long period of time under the operating temperature between 290 and 33$0^{\circ}C$. Under the same conditions, it is well known that degradation is not observed in low alloy steel. An investigation of the effect of thermal aging on the various mechanical properties of the dissimilar weld zone is required. The purpose of the present investigation is to find the effect of thermal aging on the dissimilar weld zone. The specimens are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique maintained for various times at 43$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Then, The various mechanical test for the dissimilar welds are performed.

  • This paper presents thermal aging effect on fracture toughness properties of GTAW (gas tungsten arc welding) and SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) of 316L stainless steels, and investigates the applicability of the existing three thermal aging models for CASS (cast stainless steels). Thermal aging was carried out at 350 ℃ for up to 15,000h and at 400 ℃ up to 8,000h. After aging, tensile and fracture toughness tests using 0.5T C(T) specimens were carried out at room temperature and at 288 ℃. Comparing with the predictions using three (ANL, French and H3T) thermal aging models for CASS show that the predictions can be very non-conservative at operating temperature, and thus that the existing thermal aging models for CASS cannot be applied to the welded stainless steels.
