오스템퍼 처리(處理)한 구상흑연주철(球狀黑鉛鑄鐵)의 강인화(强靭化)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究)(1) (The Study on the Strength and Toughness of Austempered Ductile Cast Iron)

  • Ductile cast iron has good ductility and toughness, for the graphite morphology is spheroidal. It has been reported that the strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron was resulted from the modification of matrix structure by the heat treatment or the addition of alloying elements. In this study, effects of various special heat treatments (cyclic heat treatment and intermediate heat treatment) and Ni addition on the toughness and strength of the austempered ductile cast iron were studied. The results obtained from this study were as follows : 1. The amount of fine pearlite was increased with the Ni content and the number of cycle in cyclic heat treatment. 2. When the specimens treated and not by special heat treatment at 820 was austempered, in the former the austenite was formed on grain boundary entirely, but in the latter on grain boundary partially. 3. The impact energy was decreased with the Ni content, because the coarisen austenite pools formed with the Ni content was transformed into martensite during quenching. 4. The mechanical properties of austempered ductile cast iron containing 2%Ni treated cyclic heat treatment(5 cycles)was very excellent in handness 99(HRB), impact energy 12(kg-m) maximum fracture load 1500(kg-f).

WROUGHT WIRE CLASP의 물리적 성질에 관한 실험적 연구 (AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON PHYSICAL PROPERTIES OF WROUGHT WIRE CLASP)

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of attachment technique on mechanical properties and microstructures of wrought wires. The wires tested in this study were precious metal wires: PGP (Platinum-Gold -Palladium), Elastic #12, Denture Clasp, Standard, Jelenko No. 2, Degulor-Klammerdraht, DM (Dong Myung) and base metal wire : Ticonium. Each wire was divided into three groups, and each group was heat treated as embedding, cast to, and soldering state. Heat treated sample was evaluated by tensile test, bending test, microhardness test, element analysis and microstructure test. The obtained results were as follows: 1. In tensile test, cast to and soldering procedures have an effect on wrought wire clasp as hardening heat treatment. 2. Maximum bending strength was significantly increased in Elastic #12, Denture Clasp, Standard, and DM in cast to procedure. 3. Ticonium showed the highest Victors hardness number, followed by PGP, and there was no significant difference in other wrought wires. In cast to and soldering procedure, Victors hardness number was significantly increased in precious wrought wires. 4. The precious wrought wire showed typical fibrous structure and this was disappeared in cast to and soldering procedure. But physical properties were not influenced by this phenomenon.

Application of a Dynamic-Nanoindentation Method to Analyze the Local Structure of an Fe-18 at.% Gd Cast Alloy

  • A dynamic nanoindentation method was applied to study an Fe-18 at.% Gd alloy as a neutron-absorbing material prepared by vacuum arc-melting and cast in a mold. The Fe-18 at.% Gd cast alloy had a microstructure with matrix phases and an Fe-rich primary dendrite of $Fe_9Gd$. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray spectra showed that the Fe-18 at.% Gd cast alloy consisted of 35.84 at.% $Fe_3Gd$, 6.58 at.% $Fe_5Gd$, 16.22 at.% $Fe_9Gd$, 1.87 at.% $Fe_2Gd$, and 39.49 at.% ${\beta}-Fe_{17}Gd_2$. The average nanohardness of the primary dendrite phase and the matrix phases were 8.7 GPa and 9.3 GPa, respectively. The fatigue limit of the matrix phase was approximately 37% higher than that of the primary dendrite phase. The dynamic nanoindentation method is useful for identifying local phases and for analyzing local mechanical properties.

Experimental and Theoretical Studies on Corrosion Inhibition Performance of Phenanthroline for Cast Iron in Acid Solution

  • The corrosion inhibition of cast iron in 1 M HCl by Phenanthroline (Phen) was investigated using potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) curves, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), surface analysis and theoretical calculations. It is found that Phen exhibits high inhibition activity towards the corrosive action of HCl and its adsorption obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model. The results showed that inhibition efficiency increases with Phen concentration up to a maximum value of 96% at 1.4 mM, and decreases slightly with the increase in temperature. The free adsorption energy value indicates that Phen adsorbs on cast iron surface in 1 M HCl via a simultaneous physisorption and chemisorption mechanism. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs, atomic force microscopy (AFM) and FTIR analysis confirmed the formation of a protective film on cast iron surface, resulting in the improvement of its corrosion resistance in the studied aggressive solution. Quantum chemical calculations at the DFT level were achieved to correlate electronic structure parameters of Phen molecules with their adsorption mode.

주조/단조 기술을 이용한 알루미늄 타이로드 엔드 제조에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Manufacture of Aluminum Tie-Rod End by Casting/Forging Process)

  • Aluminum casting/forging process is used to produce an aluminum tie-rod end for the steering system of automobiles. Firstly, casting experiments were carried out to get a good preform for forging the tie-rod end. In the casting experiment, the effects of additives, Ti+B, Zr, Sr, and Mg, on the mechanical properties and the microstructure of a cast preform were investigated. And a finite element analysis was performed to determine an optimal configuration of the cast preform. Lastly, a forging experiment was carried out to make the final product of aluminum tie-rod end by using the above cast preform. In the casting experiments, when 0.2% Ti+B and 0.25% Zr were simultaneously added into molten Al-Si alloy, the highest values of tensile strength and elongation of the cast preform were obtained. When 0.04% Sr were added into the molten aluminum alloy, the finest silicon-structure was observed in the cast preform. The highest hardness was obtained when 0.2% Mg was added. In the forging experiment, It was confirmed that the optimal configuration of a cast preform predicted by FE analysis was very useful. The hardness of a cast/forged product using designed preform was superior to that of required specification.

  • Iron-based metal matrix composites have been recently investigated for the use of inexpensive abrasion resistance material. This paper carried out to investigate the in-situ reaction effects on the microstructural characteristics and the formation mechanism of tungsten carbides in a white cast iron matrix. The specimens of Fe-3.2%C-2.8%Si alloy cast-bonded with tungsten wire were cast in the metal mold and isothermally heat treated at $950^{\circ}C$ up to 48 hours. The typical microstructure of heat treated specimens showed the reaction layer of WC at the interface of tungsten wire and the carbon depletion zone between the WC layer and the matrix. During the formation of WC layer, if the carbon supply is insufficient due to the decarburization of matrix or the isolation of matrix by cast-bonded W wires, the reaction layer develops coarse hexagonal crystalline WC. From the microstructural investigation, it was found that the volume of WC layer and the carbon depletion zone increased linearly with the isothermal heat treating time. This results supported that the formation rate of WC in the white cast iron matrix is controlled by the interfacial reaction with a constant reaction rate.

스트립캐스팅한 구상흑연주철박판의 합금원소 및 열처리에 따른 미세조직과 기계적 성질의 변화 (Effects of Alloying Elements and Heat Treatments on the Microstructures and Mechanical Properties of Ductile Cast Iron by Strip Casting)

  • Strip casting process is a new technology that makes a near net shape thin strip directly from molten metal. With this process, a large amount of energy and casting cost could be decreased from the abbreviation of reheating and/or hot rolling process. Ductile cast iron which has spheroidal graphite in the matrix is the most commercial and industrial material, because of its supreme strength, toughness, and wear resistance etc. But it cannot be produced to the thin strip owing to difficulty in rolling of ductile cast iron. In this study, ductile cast iron strips are produced by the twin roll strip caster, with different chemical compositions of C, Si, and Mn contents. And then heat-treated, microstructures and mechanical properties are examined. The microstructures of as-cast strip are that of white cast iron which consists of the mixture of cementite and pearlite, but the equiaxed crystal zone of the pearlite or segregation zone of cementite exists in the center region of the strip thickness, which cannot be observed in the rapidly solidified metallic mold cast specimens. This structure is supposed to be formed from the thermal distribution of strip and the rolling force. Comparing with the structures of each strips after heat treatment, increasing Si content makes smaller spheroidal graphite and more compact in the matrix, furthermore the less of Mn content makes the ferrite matrix be obtained clearer and easier. As a result of the tensile test of graphitization heat-treated strips, the yield strengths are about 250 MPa, the tensile strengths are about $430{\sim}500$ MPa, and the elongations are about $10{\sim}13%$. In the case of the strip which has the smaller and more compact spheroidal graphite in the ferrite matrix, the higher tensile strength and better drawability could be obtained.

ABS 수지의 용융적층조형방식에 의한 자가 맞춤형 부목의 3차원 출력 사례 연구 (A Study of 3D Printing of Self-Customization Cast by Using Fused Deposition Modeling Technique of ABS Resin)

  • 본 연구에서는 소량생산 및 개인 맞춤형 제작으로 매우 유용한 3D 프린팅 기술을 이용하여 자가 맞춤형 부목을 제작하고자 하였다. 방법으로는 3D 프린터를 이용하여 용융적층조형방식(fused deposition modeling)으로 부목을 제작하였으며, 재료는 열가소성 플라스틱 계열인 ABS(acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) 수지를 이용하였다. 부목의 모델링은 실제 인체의 손 부위 3차원 전산화단층영상을 이용하였으며 통풍이 가능하도록 설계하였다. 그 결과 실제 인체 손 모양과 일치하는 자기 맞춤형 부목이 성공적으로 출력되었다. 또한 기존 부목보다도 우수한 방사선영상을 획득할 수 있었다. 결론적으로 본 연구에서 제시한 3D 프린팅 사례는 ABS 수지를 이용한 용융적층조형방식의 유사한 구조물을 출력할 때 기초자료로 사용할 것으로 판단된다.

오스템퍼드 구상흑연주철의 파괴특성에 미치는 오스템퍼링 온도의 영향에 관한 연구 (Effect of Austempering Temperature on the Fracture Characteristics in Austempered Ductile Cast Iron)

  • This study was performed to investigate the effect of austempering temperature on the mechanical properties and fracture characteristics of the ductile cast iron with Cu, Mo and Cu, Mo, Ni. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows; Microstructures of Cu-Mo and Cu-Mo-Ni ductile cast iron by austempering were obtained low bainite with some martensite at $250^{\circ}C$, mixture structure of upper and low bainite obtained at $300^{\circ}C$ and upper bainite obtained at $350^{\circ}C$. Tensile, impact and fracture toughness properties were remarkably controlled by retained austenite. With increasing austempering temperature, tensile and yield strength, hardness decreased, while the elongation and impact absorption energy, fracture toughness increased. With adding Ni, tensile and yield strength increased and elongation, facture toughness and impact absorption energy decreased. Retained austenite increased with increasing austempering temperature and the fracture surface were shown mixture structure of fibrous and dimple.
