This introduction is both a statement of a research problem and an account of the first research results for its solution. As more historical databases come online and overlap in coverage, we need to discuss the two main issues that prevent 'big' results from emerging so far. Firstly, historical data are seen by computer science people as unstructured, that is, historical records cannot be easily decomposed into unambiguous fields, like in population (birth and death records) and taxation data. Secondly, machine-learning tools developed for structured data cannot be applied as they are for historical research. We propose a complex network, narrative-driven approach to mining historical databases. In such a time-integrated network obtained by overlaying records from historical databases, the nodes are actors, while thelinks are actions. In the case study that we present (the world as seen from Venice, 1205-1533), the actors are governments, while the actions are limited to war, trade, and treaty to keep the case study tractable. We then identify key periods, key events, and hence key actors, key locations through a time-resolved examination of the actions. This tool allows historians to deal with historical data issues (e.g., source provenance identification, event validation, trade-conflict-diplomacy relationships, etc.). On a higher level, this automatic extraction of key narratives from a historical database allows historians to formulate hypotheses on the courses of history, and also allow them to test these hypotheses in other actions or in additional data sets. Our vision is that this narrative-driven analysis of historical data can lead to the development of multiple scale agent-based models, which can be simulated on a computer to generate ensembles of counterfactual histories that would deepen our understanding of how our actual history developed the way it did. The generation of such narratives, automatically and in a scalable way, will revolutionize the practice of history as a discipline, because historical knowledge, that is the treasure of human experiences (i.e. the heritage of the world), will become what might be inherited by machine learning algorithms and used in smart cities to highlight and explain present ties and illustrate potential future scenarios and visionarios.

Mechanized tunnelling by TBMs has been extensively adopted for last two decades. Nevertheless, only few case histories have been reported. Unlike NATM tunnels, the case histories of the weak zone have been seldom reported for the mechanized tunnelling, even in the other countries. In this study, a collapse of TBM tunnel occurred in the severely altered weak rock zones between volcaniclastic rocks and granitic rocks was briefly described. A systematic geotechnical investigation, which was performed to examine the cause of the collapse, was carried out at the site and then characteristics of the rocks in the zones were evaluated. Moreover, This study propose a guide line of estimateing the possibility of collapse in TBM tunnels through comparing experimental results with surveying results of general rocks.

Several analytical procedures available in literature, for the evaluation of wind induced fatigue damage of structures, either assume the wide band random stress variations as narrow band random process or use correction factors along with narrow band assumption. This paper compares the correction factors obtained using the Rainflow Cycle (RFC) counting of the measured stress time histories on a lamp mast and a lattice tower, with those evaluated using different frequency domain methods available in literature. A Bi-modal spectral method has been formulated by idealising the single spectral moment method into two modes of background and resonant components, as considered in the gust response factor, for the evaluation of fatigue of slender structures subjected to "along-wind vibrations". A closed form approximation for the effective frequency of the background component has been developed. The simplicity and the accuracy of the new method have been illustrated through a case study by simulating stress time histories at the base of an urban light pole for different mean wind speeds. The correction factors obtained by the Bi-modal spectral method have been compared with those obtained from the simulated stress time histories using RFC counting method. The developed Bi-modal method is observed to be a simple and easy to use alternative to detailed time and frequency domain fatigue analyses without considerable computational and experimental efforts.

In this paper, firstly, acceleration-time histories were generated by varying strong motion duration in the frequency domain for application to a seismically isolated nuclear power structure, so as to examine the effects of strong motion duration on the behavior of the structure. Secondly, real recorded earthquakes were modified to match the target response spectrum based on the revised SRP 3.7.1(2007) and the modified time histories were applied to the analysis of a seismically isolated nuclear power structure. The obtained values of acceleration and displacement responses of the structure were, finally, compared with the values obtained in case of applying acceleration-time histories generated in the frequency domain to the structure.

The objective of this study is to review the current state of earthquake simulation tecniques using the shaking table and check the reliability. One degree-of-freedom(d.o.f) and three d.o.f aluminium shear models were used and $4m{\times}4m$ 6 d.o.f shaking table was excitated in one horizontal direction to simulate 1940 El centro earthquake accelerogram (NS component). When the actual acceleration history of shaking table is compared to the desired one, it can be found that the overall histories are very similar, but that the lower frequency range (0~2 Hz) of the actual excitation has generally lower amplitude than that of the desired in Fourier transform amplitude. Free vibration and white noise tests have shown almost the some values for natural frequencies, but shown quite different values for damping rations, that is, 1.37% in case of free vibration test vs 14.76 % in case of white noise test. The time histories of story shear driff show the globally linear elastic behaviors. But the elliptical shape of the histories with one of the axis being the stiffness of the story implies the effect of viscous damping.
Drainage system in railroad has a very important role to operate the system. Drainage system should be carefully considered in design and construction due to a difficult access to the system during operation. In this paper, recent case histories were presented, which showed how an improper drainage system affects the railroad operation.

The acceleration levels and durations of seismic inputs for nuclear power plant design are surveyed. Among those inputs, two artificial acceleration time histories with same acceleration level and duration are selected and their characteristics are studied by calculating response spectra and spectrum intensity. The selected time histories which have the duration of 24 sec. satisfy the design response spectra of US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Regulatory Guide 1. 60. One of the selected time histories is improved to have the duration of 15 sec. without significant changes in the other characteristics. A case study of a plane model with 3 lumped masses is done using three time histories, i.e, two selected and one improved time histories. It is found that the improved curve gives almost the same results as the original one and reduces the computer time by about half, whereas two selected time histories give the results with same trend but much different magnitudes each other. It is claimed, however, that the improved time history is not the optimal one, but very economical in practical applications.
Helicopter-borne electromagnetic (HEM) systems were originally developed for the exploration of mineral deposits. The frequency range of a conventional HEM system for mineral exploration, however, is relatively low and so not invariably suitable for its application to the fields of civil engineering because of its poor resolution in the shallower part of the earth. A DIGHEM HEM system was acquired by Nippon Engineering, with the frequencies chosen by the senior author. The five frequencies range from 220 Hz (the lowest) to 137,500 Hz (the highest). These frequencies improve the resolution of materials in the shallower part while maintaining a depth of investigation of greater than 100 m. This paper describes six case histories of geological and geotechnical surveys for civil engineering using HEM. These case histories include HEM surveys for investigating landslide, an alluvial area, root selection of road construction, areas related to dam and tunnel construction, and the simultaneous joint inversion of HEM and CSAMT data for a deep tunnel. These survey results show that HEM has sufficient resolution in both horizontal and vertical directins to contribute significantly to outlining the regional geology and its engineering problems.

Papermaking has changed remarkably during the past 20 years, creating huge pressures on retention and drainage programs. During this time, technology has advanced from single PAM flocculants to inorganic microparticle-based programs and then to micropolymer-based programs. In today's evolving fine paper market, retention and drainage programs have to meet increased demands in many areas, such as increased speed, GAP formers, dilution headboxes, higher ash levels, reduced furnish quality, lower cost, and increased machine efficiency. Hercules recently introduced a new technology that offers performance and stability improvements and operational cost savings as compared to existing advanced technologies. $PerForm(R)$ SP Advanced Retention and Drainage Technology consists of a family of products based on a structured organic particulate that offers papermakers the ultimate flexibility for management of wet end chemistry. This paper compares $PerForm(R)$ SP Advanced Retention and Drainage Technology to inorganic microparticle and micropolymer technologies and provides multiple case histories on machines that demonstrate the benefits of the technology. In these case histories, the PerForm SP is shown to provide improved retention and drainage that results in improved performance and operational cost savings to the mill.
Dc resistivity monitoring has been increasingly used in order to understand the changes of subsurface conditions in terms of conductivity. The commonly adopted interpretation approach which separately inverts time-lapse data may generate inversion artifacts due to measurement error. Eventually the contaminated error amplifies the artifacts when reconstructing the difference images to quantitatively estimate the change of ground condition. In order to alleviate the problems, we defined the subsurface structure as four dimensional (4-D) space-time model and developed 4-D inversion algorithm which can calculate the reasonable subsurface structure continuously changing in time even when the material properties change during data measurements. In this paper, we discussed two case histories of resistivity monitoring to study the ground condition change when the properties of the subsurface material were artificially altered by injecting conductive materials into the ground: (1) dye tracer experiment to study the applicability of electrical resistivity tomography to monitoring of water movement in soil profile and (2) the evaluation of cement grouting performed to reinforce the ground. Through these two case histories, we demonstrated that the 4-D resistivity imaging technique is very powerful to precisely delineate the change of ground condition. Particularly owing to the 4-D inversion algorithm, we were able to reconstruct the history of the change of subsurface material property.
