  • Flow characteristics in linear axial cascade have been studied using large eddy simulation(LES) based on finite element method(FEM) to investigate details of the leakage flow in the tip clearance of axial flow rotor. STAR-CD(FVM) and PAT-Flow(FEM) have been adopted to solve the Navier-Stokes equations for the simulation of the unsteady turbulent flow. Numerical results from the present study have been compared with the existing experimental results to investigate a tip clearance effect on velocity profile and static pressure distribution on blade surface at various spanwise positions. Both simulation results agree well with the experimental data. However, it has been shown that the results of finite-element large-eddy simulation agree better with experimental data than $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulent model based on finite volume method regarding the tip vortex geometry and static pressure distribution at the center of the tip vortex core. As a result of this study, it is shown that finite-element large-eddy simulation method can predict more exactly on the tip leakage vortex flow and behind flow field.

  • A numerical analysis has been conducted in order to simulate the characteristics of complex flow through linear cascades of high performance turbine blade with/without tip clearance by using a pressure-correction based, generalized 3D incompressible Wavier-Stokes CFD code. The development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, leakage vortex, tip vortex within tip clearance, etc. are clearly identified through the present simulation which uses the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model with wall function method and a second-order linear upwind scheme for convective terms. The present simulation results are consistent with the generally known tendency that occurs in the blade passage and tip clearance. A 3D model for secondary and leakage flows through turbine cascades with/without tip clearance is also suggested from the present simulation results, including the effects of tip clearance height.

  • A design method for transonic turbine blades is developed based on Navier-Stokes equations. The present computing process is done on the four separate steps, 1.e., determination of the blade profile, generation of the computational grids, cascade flow simulation and analysis of the computed results in the sense of the aerodynamic performance. The blade shapes are designed using the cubic polynomials under the control of the design parameters. Numerical methods for the flow equations are based on Van-Leer's FVS with an upwind TVD scheme on the finite volume. Applications are made to the VKI transonic rotor blades. Computed results are analyzed with respect to the aerodynamic performance and are compared with the experimental data.

  • In this study, the overall performance and the effect of the tip leakage flow of the centrifugal compressor with a refrigerant HFC-l34a were numerically studied using CFX-TASCflow. To study the effect of the tip leakage flow, the numerical study of the overall performance of HFC-l34a centrifugal compressor with a cascade diffuser was preceded and compared with the experimental result. Six different tip clearances were used to consider the influence of the tip clearance on the performance. The tip leakage flow was illustrated for qualitative discussion. The results obtained in this study can be applied to the determination of the cold clearance.

  • The performance characteristics of partial admission supersonic turbines are analyzed by using the commercial CFD program FLUENT6.0. The governing equations were discretized with Euler implicit method in time and 2nd-order upwind scheme of FVM in space. The k-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model was utilized to describe the turbulent flow field. In order to investigate the nozzle--rotor interactions and the effect of partial admission, the flows in supersonic turbine rotor cascades with a nozzle are computed. Extensive computations of partial admission supersonic turbines provide the shock structures and flow patterns in the nozzle and rotor. It is clearly shown that the nozzle flow is highly affected by the shocks or expansion waves propagated from the rotor leading edge. And the rotor flow is also affected by the shocks or wakes originated from the nozzle.

  • The computational flow analysis using LES technique was carried out to investigate the flow characteristics of a sirocco fan under the maximum flowrate condition. The commercial SC/Tetra software was used for this unsteady and three-dimensional numerical analysis. In consequence, because a flow is unstable within the range of about 50% of a housing depth from a bellmouth around the cutoff region, the passing flow through the blade cascade occurred on the X-Y plane is a slow or a reverse with approaching to the housing inlet. Also, the secondary flow shows on the radial plane of a housing, and its vortex center exists within about 33% of a housing depth from a bellmouth except the cutoff region. Moreover, the flow occurring on the exit plane of a sirocco fan shows a complex secondary flow.

  • A conventional centrifugal pump causes a drastic deterioration of air-water two-phase flow performances even at an air-water two-phase flow condition of inlet void fraction less than 10% in the range of relatively low water flow rate. Then we have developed a two-phase flow centrifugal pump which consists of a tandem arrangement of double rotating cascades and blades of outer cascade have higher outlet angle more than $90^{\circ}$. In design of the two-phase flow pump for various sized and operating conditions, similarity relations of geometric dimensions to hydraulic performances is very useful. The similarity relations of rotational speed, impeller diameter and blade height are investigated for the developed impeller in the present paper. As the results, the similarity law of rotational speed and impeller diameter is clarified experimentally even in two-phase flow condition. In addition, influences of blade height on air-water two-phase flow performances indicate a little difference from the similarity relations.

  • It is experimentally well-known that high anisotropies of the turbulent flow field are dominant inside the tip leakage vortex, which is attributable to a substantial proportion of the total loss and constitutes one of the dominant mechanisms of the noise generation. This anisotropic nature of turbulence invalidates the use of the conventional isotropic eddy viscosity turbulence models based on the Boussinesq assumption. In this study, to check whether an anisotropic turbulence model is superior to the isotropic ones or not, the results obtained from the steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations based on the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ model and the Reynolds stress model (RSM) are compared with experimental data for two test cases: a linear compressor cascade and a forward-swept axial-flow fan. Through this comparative study of turbulence models, it is clearly shown that the RSM, which can express the production term and body-force term induced by system rotation without introducing any modeling, should be used to predict quantitatively the complex tip leakage flow, especially in the rotating environment.

  • Total pressure losses required to calculate the total-to-total efficiency are estimated by integrating empirical loss coefficients of four loss mechanisms along the mean-line of blades as follows; blade profile loss, secondary flow loss, end wall loss and tip clearance loss. The off-design points are obtained on the basis of Howell's off-design performance of a compressor cascade. Also, inlet-outlet air angles and camber angle are obtained from semi-empirical relations of transonic airfoils' minimum loss incidence and deviation angles. And nominal point is replaced by the design point. It is concluded that relatively simple loss models and Howell's off-design data permit us to calculate the off-design performance with satisfactory accuracy. And this method can be easily extended for off-design performance prediction of multi-stage compressors.
