  • A solution procedure to minimize total carousel related costs has been developed under the carousel throughput rate and total storage capacity requirements. The carousel related costs include carousel facility costs which are proportional to the number of carousels and carousel operating costs which are directly related to the moving distances of carousels. The number of carousels is dependent upon the size of a carousel and the moving distances are determined by the size of a carousel, storage item assignment to each carousel, and the item positions in a carousel. When the storage/retrieval requirements for each storage item is equal, an optimal algorithm has been developed. When the storage/retrieval requirements is unequal, a heuristic solution procedure has been developed because of the complexity of the problem.

  • A solution procedure to minimize the number of storage carousels has been developed under the carousel throughput rate and total storage capacity requirements. The number of carousels can be reduced by increasing the throughput rate of carousels which depends upon the size of carousels, the storage item allocation to carousels, and the item position assignments in each carousel. Since the problem is very complicated and hard to solve optimally, the following solution procedure to solve the problem hierarchically is proposed: With a given number of carousels, the storage items are allocated to carousels so that the slowest average transaction time among carousels may be minimized, and then the position of each item is assigned in the allocated carousel so that the throughput of the carousel can be maximized.

  • The performance of a double carousel system depends on its design and operation strategy. The two-class based assignment policy is expected to be an appropriate storage policy for its efficient operation, since it has two independently-moved carousels, lower and upper sub-carousels. This paper conducts a comparative analysis of the effects of the two-class based assignment policy and those of randomized assignment policy on the throughput of a double carousel system. We also show that, by allowing the sub-carousels not to be equal in size, a further improvement in the throughput can be obtained.

  • This paper deals with an automated storage carrousel which handles work-in-process(WIP) such as small parts for kitting. The system has been used predominately for order picking applications. Throughput performance of the system can be measured by the inverse of the expected order picking time. Analytic models are developed for approximating the expected times under the "nearest-item" sequencing rule. The performance of the models are tested through computer simulation. The gap between the two is shown to be reasonably small.

  • This work focuses on the implementation and optimization of the Automated Storage and Retrieval System(AS/RS) which is associated with Logistics Information System(LIS). We survey literature and present a case study for the optimization of Logistics System. In the case study, we examine the adaptation and implementation of AS/RS after we analyzed the processes of the company. Logistics Information System is an important component to keep up with the competitive advantage in the global business environments. The company in the case applies LIS to its efficient physical distribution management. AS/RS leads to some benefits; maximized storage space, increased productivity, reduced labor costs and human error, and improved accuracy. AS/RS is found especially effective when working with narrow aisles and extremely high racks.
