  • In this work, the SiC powders were synthesized through the carbonized matter from the mixture of silica powder and rice husks. The SiC powders, obtained from the carbothermal reduction reaction of silica and carbonized rice husks, were investigated by XRD patterns, XPS, FE-SEM and FE-TEM. In the XRD patterns, the specimens showed clearly very high strong peak of (111) plane near $35^{\circ}$ as well as weak (220) and (311) peak respectively at approximately $60^{\circ}$ and $72^{\circ}$. Under Ar atmosphere, the power synthesized from the mixture (in case of mixing ratio, 6 : 4) of carbonized rice husks and silica showed mainly cubic SiC crystalline phase showing relatively lower ratio of hexagonal phase without residual carbon in XRD pattern. In the TEM analysis, the specimen, synthesized from carbonized rice husks and silica with mixing ratio of 6 : 4 under Ar atmosphere, showed relatively fine particles under $5{\mu}m$ and a crystalline SiC phase of (100) diffraction pattern.

  • SiC powders have been recovered from silicon-containing waste slurry by carbothermal reduction method with carbon black. Large amount of silicon-containing waste slurry is generated from Solar Cell industry. In an environmental and economic point of view, retrieve of the valuable natural resource from the silicon waste is important. In this study, SiC powder recovered by the reaction ball-milled silicon powder from waste and carbon black at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 3h under vacuum condition. Physical properties of samples have been characterized using SEM, XRD, Particle size analyzer and FT-IR spectroscopy.

  • The preparation of ZrC/SiC mixed powders from $ZrSiO_4/C$ and $ZrSiO_4/Al/C$ systems was attempted in the temperature range below $1600^{\circ}C$ under Ar or $Ar/H_2$ gas flow(100-500ml/min). The formation mechanism and kinetics of ZrC/SiC were suggested and the resultant powders were characterized. In $ZrSiO_4/C$ system, ZrC and SiC were formed by competitive reaction of $ZrO_2(s)$ and SiO(g) with carbon at temperature higher than $1400^{\circ}C$. The apparent activation energy for the formation of ZrC was approximately 18.5kcal/mol($1400-1600^{\circ}C$). In $ZrSiO_4/Al/C$ system, ZrC was formed by reaction of ZrO(g) with Al(l, g) and carbon at temperature higher than $1200^{\circ}C$, and SiC was formed by reduction-carbonization of SiO(g) with Al(l, g) and carbon at temperature higher than $1300^{\circ}C$. The products obtained at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 5h consisted of ZrC with lattice constant of $4.679{\AA}$ and crystallite size of $640{\AA}$, and SiC with lattice constant of $4.135{\AA}$ and crystallize size of $500{\AA}$. And also, the mean particle size was about $21.8{\mu}m$.
