Carbonation is one of the most important factors causing the corrosion of reinforcement concrete. Nevertheless, experimental studies on the concrete carbonation have not been carried out sufficiently because of the slow process of carbonation process. Therefore, this study adopts an experimental system exploiting a vacuum instrument that has been recently developed to accelerate carbonation instead of existing experimental system to conduct rapid carbonation tests on Portland cement and fly-ash cement concretes. Test results revealed that, compared to water-cement ratio of 40%, the carbonation depth increases from 103% to 138% for an increase of water-cement ratio from 45% to 60%. These results are larger than the carbonation depths obtained by mathematical model, and such difference is increasing with larger water-cement ratios. The results also indicated that larger fly-ash contents lead to sharp increase of the carbonation depth, which is in agreement with previous experimental researches. The adoption of the new accelerated carbonation test system enabled to shorten effectively the time required to produce experimental data compared to the existing carbonation test method. The experimental data obtained in this study together with ongoing acquisition of data using the new carbonation test method are expected to contribute in the understanding of the carbonation process of concrete structures in Korea.
Carbonation is one of the major deterioration factors for concrete. So. lots of researchers have proposed the equations for determining carbonated depth and the initial time of steel corrosion due to carbonation to predict the service life of concrete structures. However, there are large gaps among the equations for predicting carbonation because each researcher has different considering factors to predict carbonation depth. So, in this study, we calculated the deviations of the proposed equations for carbonation, and we calculated each researcher different corrosion initiation time. However, it has a lot of deviation. Therefore, we evaluated the probability of steel corrosion considering each deviation using MCS, an analysis method based on probability theory. In the results, we have proposed much advanced information for determining service life of reinforced concrete structures due to carbonation.
This paper discusses the spatial variability of the carbonation depth caused by the mesoscopic structure of the concrete and the influence of the spatial variability on the thickness of the concrete cover. To conduct the research, a method to generate the random aggregate structure (RAS) based on polygonal particles and a simplified numerical model of the concrete carbonation at meso-scale are firstly developed. Based on the method and model, the effect of the aggregate properties including shape, content and gradation on the spatial variability of the carbonation depth is comprehensively studied. The results show that a larger degree of the spatial variability will be obtained by using (1) the aggregates with a larger aspect ratio; (2) a larger aggregate content; (3) the gradation which has more large particles. The proper sample size and model size used in the analysis are also studied. Finally, a case study is conducted to demonstrate the influence of the spatial variability of the carbonation depth on the proper thickness of the concrete cover. The research in this paper not only provides suggestions on how to decrease the spatial variability, but also proposes the method to consider the effect of the spatial variability in designing the thickness of the concrete cover.

This study is part of the carbonation degree DB accumulation through quantitative analysis of carbonation depth, Ca(OH)2 and CO2 according to the type of finish and years of use of old concrete structures in order to predict the amount of CO2 that can be absorbed through carbonation of concrete. To this end, the depth of carbonation of the concrete core specimen is measured using an indicator, and the dry amount of water combined with CO2 in the sample is measured using a differential thermal gravimetric analyzer for samples in the carbonation area and non-carbonated area classified by the indicator, and the absorption compared to the weight of the sample. The amount of absorbed CO2 was calculated. In addition, the degree of carbonation was calculated through quantitative comparison of Ca(OH)2 in the carbonation section and non-carbonation section. In the future, we will continue to add the survey and analysis data of dismantled structures and use them as basic data for estimating the amount of carbon dioxide that can be absorbed according to the exposure conditions and years of use by concrete mix.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical properties and carbonation resistance of concretes using lightweight aggregate coated surface finishing materials. To evaluate the mechanical properties and carbonation resistance of concrete, slump, air amount, air-dried unit volume weight, compressive strength, and carbonation depth are tested. In terms of the unit volume weight of concrete, air-dried unit volume weight of concrete using coating lightweight aggregate was measured as $1,739{\sim}1,806kg/m^3$. When using coating aggregate, compressive strength of concrete at 28 days was measured as much as 82.7~95.9% of the compressive strength using non-coating aggregate. It is found that compressive strength tends to decrease with coating lightweight aggregate. However, all concretes using coating lightweight aggregate except O-LWAC satisfied the criteria for 28-day compressive strength suggested in KS. The measurement of carbonation depth when the water-repellent agent was used found that carbonation depth was reduced by as much as 2.6~6.1%. On the other hand, when using polymer waterproof agent, carbonation depth was reduced by as much as 8.6~12.0%. Consequently, to improve carbonation resistance, polymer waterproof agent was more effective than water-repellent agent. In particular, epoxy showed the most outstanding performance.

Chloride ion penetration and carbonation are the most important factors in the durability problems of reinforced concrete structures. Most of the existing studies on those subjects are focused on the no-crack concrete, though the existence of crack may strongly affect the chloride ion penetration and carbonation. To evaluate the influence of crack on the chloride ion penetration and carbonation and to assess the service life of reinforced concrete more accurately, finite volume analyses (FVA) were performed based on the FV mesh containing the ideal crack whose width is uniform along the depth. Analytical results show that the influence of crack width and depth is much more pronounced for the chloride ion penetration than for the carbonation.

Recently, in the case of domestic, for all that the deterioration environment about the carbonation of reinforced concrete structures is accelerated, systematic diagnosis and researches are not completed. And the selection techniques of repair material and method used under the situation that the indicator and the performance evaluation method are nor established are dependant on existing experience. Therefore, the purpose of this study is intend to present fundamental data for the reasonable selection of repair material and method. durability design and longevity on the deteriorated reinforced concrete structures, through computing the carbonation depth and velocity coefficient by accelerating carbonation test under various accelerating conditions and investigating the application of carbonation evaluation method. The results of this study are as follow; The resistances to carbonation are increased when the W/C ratio if lower and the treatment of surface coating is executed. And the carbonation depth and velocity coefficient according to accelerating carbonation test conditions are increased when the conditions of temperature, relative humidity and $CO_2$density are higher individually.

Recently, people are concerned about how to maintain structure well because of safety. For effective maintenance of the structure, it should be resolved about carbonation, Durability, and Service Life issues. Solving that problem will Increase Safety of Structure. The carbonation velocity is produced an effect on carbon dioxide density of surrounding near structures, the concrete quality Therefore, This study compares the Velocity of carbonation due to maintenance of the structure. Also, this study will find Service Life of Concrete Structure through Predicting Carbonation Depth.
More underground structures are increasingly being constructed such as box culverts for electric power transmission, and the life extension of these structures is very important. It is well known that the steel embedded in concrete is usually invulnerable to corrosion because the high alkalinity of the pore solution in concrete generates a thin protective oxide layer on the surface of the steel. Recent observations in the field and experimental evidence have shown that even steel in concrete can be corroded through the carbonation reaction of cover concrete. Carbonation-induced corrosion in concrete may often occur in a high carbon dioxide environment. In this study, the risk of carbonation of underground box culverts in Korea was evaluated by measuring the car¬bonation rate and concrete cover depth in the field. Then, the carbonation-free service life for the cover depth of the steel was calcu¬lated with in situ information and Monte Carlo simulation. Additionally, an accelerated carbonation test for a cracked beam specimen was performed, and the effect of a crack on the service life of a box culvert was numerically investigated with Monte Carlo simulation based on experimental results.
