  • Energy resistance welding (ERW) is a pipe-producing process that has high productivity and low manufacturing cost. However, the high heat input of ERW degrades the mechanical property of the pipe. This study investigates the effect of heat input and alloying elements on microstructure and mechanical properties of ERW pipes. As the heat input increased, the ferrite amount increased. The ferrite amount in the weld centerline was larger than t at in the weld boundary. Medium carbon steels (S45C and K55) having 0.3~0.4wt.% carbon yielded a significant difference of ferrite amount in the weld centerline and weld boundary. High alloyed steels (DP780 and K55) having 1.5~1.6wt.% Mn showed a ferrite rich zone in the weld centerline. These phenomena are probably due to decarburization and demanganisation in the weld centerline. As the ferrite fraction increased, the hardness decreased a little for the S45C steels. In addition, DP780 steels and K55 steels showed that the hardness drops when those steels have a ferrite rich zone. But we demonstrated the good tensile property of the DP780 steels and K55 steels in which Mn is included.

  • Microalloyed steels, which substituted by conventional quenched and tempered steels, have been used in a wide variety of structural and engineering application. The main driving force for preference of MA steels is a cost reduction which can be achieved by an omission of heat treatment. In this study, low carbon martensitic MA steels in 0.18C-0.30(0.60)Si-2.00(1.80)Mn-0.05S-1.5Cr-0.05(0.10)V-0.015Ti(wt%) were investigated to know the effects of cooling method on the mechanical properties and microstructures of Si, Mn, V added microalloyed steel at different reheating temperature. Microstructure of oil quenched steels which were comprised lath martensite, auto-tempered martensite and retained austenite, had more various structure than that of air cooled steel made of mainly bainite. Therefore, oil quenched steels, which had more various microstructure, had better strength-toughness balance compare to air cooled steels. In the impact test, fracture mode of oil quenched steels, which showed good mechanical properties, were dimple, but that of air cooled steels were cleavage.

  • Corrosion of carbon and weathering steels were evaluated under 3 environmental exposures in Thailand (urban, rural and marine) for a year. The seasonal study was designed to determine different corrosion mechanisms by 6 months of dry season and 6 months of rainy season in a year. The sheltered exposure racks were used to determine the washing effect of min. At each site, climatic and pollutants analyses were carried out. The present study showed that the difference in corrosion rates of carbon and weathering steels was not so distinguished in both rural (AIT) and urban (TISTR) environments. The corrosion rate of weathering steel was somewhat lower than that of carbon steel and the decreasing tendency of corrosion rate with time was slightly higher for weathering steel than for carbon steel. In marine (Rayong) environment, the corrosion rate was higher and the effect of wet and dry seasons was observed. The corrosion rate in 6 dry months was higher for direct exposure than for sheltered exposure. However, in 6 rainy months. the corrosion rate of sheltered exposure was higher than that of direct exposure. In direct exposure for I year, that is, the first 6 dry months and the next 6 rainy months, the corrosion rate decreased with time. but in sheltered exposure, the corrosion rate did not decrease with time. instead, increased in the next 6 rainy months. This indicated that the protect ive layer formed in the first 6 dry months could be destroyed by high deposition of chloride to r sheltered exposure in the next 6 rainy months; whereas the rust layer for direct exposure could be kept sound due to washing effect in rainy season, even though the deposition rate of chloride was almost the same for direct and sheltered exposures. In marine environment, the weathering steel showed higher corrosion resistance than carbon steel but its corrosion rate was higher than those in other environments.

  • The graphitization is affected by the addition of small amount of the elements, such as Si, Al, Ni, B, Cr and Mn etc. Boron is well known as the most effective element for the graphitization of cementite in high carbon steels. But a study on quantitative analysis of B effect on the graphitization is few reported. Therefore the effect of boron addition in Fe-0.65%C-1.0%Si-0.5%Mn steels on the graphitization is investigated quantitatively using hardness tester, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, neutron induced microscopic radiography. The graphitization in high carbon steels is promoted with 0.003~0.005%B addition. But the graphitization in steels which has no boron takes long holding time at $680{\sim}720^{\circ}C$. The hardness of quenched steel containing 0.003%B is higher than that of 0.005%B added steel due to complete dissolution of fine graphites into the austenite. The 0.003%B added high carbon steel graphitized at $680^{\circ}C$ for 25hr is useful steel for the agricultural implements and automobile parts which needed a good formability and high hardness.

  • The current study elucidates the effects of cementite spheroidization and pro-eutectoid ferrite on the sliding wear resistance in medium carbon (0.45wt%C) and high carbon (1wt%C) steels. Both steels were initially heat treated to obtain a fully pearlite or ferrite + pearlite microstructure. Spheroidizing heat treatments were performed on both steels to spheroidize the pearlitic cementite. Sliding wear tests were conducted using a pin-on-disk wear tester with the steel specimens as the disk and an alumina ($Al_2O_3$) ball as the pin. The sliding wear tests were carried out at room temperature in air with humidity of $40{\pm}2%$. Adapted sliding distance and applied load was 300m and 100N, respectively. Sliding speed was 0.1m/s and the wear-track radius was 9 mm. Worn surfaces and cross-sections of the wear track were examined using an SEM. Micro Vickers hardness of the wear-track subsurface was measured as a function of depth from the worn surface. Hardness and sliding-wear resistance of both steel decreased with increased spheroidization of the cementite. The decrease was more significant in the fully pearlitic steel (1wt%C steel). The steel with the pro-eutectoid ferrite showed relatively higher wear resistance compared to the spheroidized pearlitic steel.

  • An investigation was conducted into the effects of $\kappa$-carbides on the cracking phenomenon, which often occurred in cold-rolled light-weight steel plates. Three kinds of steels were fabricated by varying the C content, and their microstructures and tensile properties were investigated. In the two steels that contained a high carbon content, the band structures of ferrites and $\kappa$-carbides that were severely elongated along the rolling direction were well developed, whereas continuous arrays of $\kappa$-carbides were formed in the steel that contained a low carbon content. Detailed microstructural analyses of the deformed region beneath the tensile fracture surface showed that the cracks initiated at arrays of $\kappa$-carbides or $\kappa$-carbides formed interfaces between the band structures, which initiated cleavage fractures in the ferrite bands, while the bands populated with a number of $\kappa$-carbides did not play an important role in propagating the cracks. Thus, the minimization of interfacial $\kappa$-carbides or $\kappa$-carbide arrays by increasing the carbon content was essential for preventing cracking from occurring during cold rolling.

  • The atmospheric humidity is varied between 30% and 90% with season in Korea. Thus the influence of humidity on the behavior of wear for tools and dies. This paper presents the influence of atmospheric humidity on the wear of carbon the un-lubricated pin-on-disk sliding contact. it was found that the severe wear is dominant at a low humidity and the mild wear is strongly related with the carbon concentration of the steel at a high humidity in this study. The experiments were carried out in a chamber where the humidity was accurately maintained by humidifier. To investigate the relationship three different carbon steels such as 1020, 1041, and 1034 steels were used.

  • The present study tackles the metallurgical subjects involving the thin slab-direct hot rolling process, i.e. mini-mill process. In order to clarify the effect of chemical composition of steel and MnS precipitation behaviors on the development of edge cracking during hot rolling, the content of manganese and sulfur in low carbon steel was varied and the isothermal treatment prior to roughing was applied. Edge cracking during roughing in the hot-rolling process of mini-mill was effectively prevented by means of the isothermal treatment at 115$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 minutes in the 0.4% manganese steel containing sulfur lower than 0.013%. With the increase in manganese content in low carbon steel, coarser MnS developed. The edge cracking index which denotes the total length of edge crack per unit edge-length of rolled specimens was proposed in this paper. It was found that the edge cracking index linearly decreased with the increase in the ratio of MnS.

  • In an effort to improve the dent resistance of exterior body panels at a reduced steel thickness, the bake hardenable steels added Ti or Nb with tensile strength of 35Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ were investigated. The bake hardenability increased with the annealing temperature and solute carbon content. Bake hardening of 3 to 5Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ was obtained in steels with a controlled solute carbon concentration range from 6 to 10ppm. The galvannealing temperature and time had little influence on the bake hardenability. The Fe-Zn alloying reaction of 35Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ BH steel was remarkably retarded due to a 0.07%P addition. The optimum galvannealing temperatures of 35Kgf/$\textrm{mm}^2$ BH steel were ranged from 520 to 56$0^{\circ}C$ in view of the Fe content and powdering resistance. The cross-section and planar views of the galvannealed coatings to characterize morphology development were discussed.
