In this study to assess chip breaking characteristics of cold-drawn free machining steels a newly developed non-dimensional parameter chip breaking index CB has been adopted. And for comparison with free machining steels chip breaking characteristics of conventional carbon steels were investigated. Properly controlled chips were produced with the CB value of 0.05-0.2 regardless of steel types. In case of cold-drawn free machining steels however cycle times of chip breaking are relatively shorter than those of conventional steels. And properly controlled chips were obtained from wider range of feed rate.
The effects of ageing treatment on the mechanical properties of two Cu-bearing HSLA(High Strength Low Alloy) steels, HSLA-A and HSLA-B ,were studied by means of SEM, TEM, tensile, charpy impact and hardness tests. These steels showed excellent combination in strength and toughness at an ageing of $650^{\circ}C$ by the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu and low carbon alloying. The peak strength was achieved at an ageing of 50$0^{\circ}C$ in both steels, while the impact energy was very low in this peak strength. With ageing temperature above this temperature, strength was decreased whereas impact energy increased. A marked increase in hardness above 675$^{\circ}C$ was associated with the formation of “M-A constituents” which forms during cooling from austenite-ferrite two phase region. The impact transition temperature of HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were -l$25^{\circ}C$ and -145$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

This work was to investigate suitable tool steels for hardening using laser beam, and was studied on carbon tool steels and alloyed tool steels such as STC3 steel, STS3 steel, STD11 steel and SKH51 steel. The surface hardness of HV700-1000 and the hardening depth of 2-2.5mm were obtained on STC3 steel and STS3 steel, and HV800-1000 was obtained on SKH51 steel, but STD11 steel was not enough. Except STD11 steel, all steels used in this study can be hardened by laser quenching or laser rapid melting.

In this study, the effect of carbon equivalent and cooling rate on microstructure and hardness of A516 steels for pressure vessel is investigated. Six kinds of specimens are fabricated by varying carbon equivalent and cooling rate, and their microstructures and hardness levels are analyzed. Specimens with low carbon equivalent consist of ferrite and pearlite. As the cooling rate increases, the size of pearlite decreases slightly. The specimens with high carbon equivalent and rapid cooling rates of 10 and $20^{\circ}C/s$ consist of not only ferrite and pearlite but also bainite structure, such as granular bainite, acicular ferrite, and bainite ferrite. As the cooling rate increases, the volume fractions of bainite structure increase and the effective grain size decreases. The effective grain sizes of granular bainite, acicular ferrite, and bainitic ferrite are ~20, ~5, and ${\sim}10{{\mu}m$, respectively. In the specimens with bainite structure, the volume fractions of acicular ferrite and bainitic ferrite, with small effective grains, increase as cooling rate increases, and so the hardness increases significantly.

The effects of boron additions in steels have long been recognized as very important, mainly with respect to hardnability of heat treatable steels. we investigated the effect of the microstructure and mechanical properties with cooling condition after heat treatment of the boron-treated(${\fallingdotseq}8{\sim}18ppm$) low carbon(${\fallingdotseq}0.2%C$) low alloy steel. The specimens were austenitised for 10 min at $910^{\circ}C$, cooled for the various periods of time from 10 sec to 30 sec or with water after forming for 15 sec. After cooling, mechanical properties were measured by tensile test and hardness test. For analysis of microstructure, Optical were carried out.
Effects of retained austenite contents on ductility of medium carbon spring steels according to steel alloy compositions and heat treatment conditions were studied. Contents of retained austenite varied with steel compositions and heat treatment conditions, and some retained austenite were found to transform to martensite on stress. Reduction of area (RA) increased with contents of retained austenite, then saturated through its maximum, and subsequently decreased. Increase in RA with retained austenite contents could be due to crack blunting effect by retained austenite on stress, however, more contents of martensite transformed from retained austenite in its higher contents could cause decrease in RA.
A pilot production is made to the high carbon Cr-Ti alloy rail steels with slight quantity of Cr & Ti added to the eutectoid carbon steel. As a part of weldability of these alloy steels, SH-CCT diagram for welding is first applied to the high carbon Cr-ti alloy rail steel with 0.1wt% Ti. The microstructure, which will be appeared at the HAZ of Enclosed-arc welding of this alloy rail seel, is a single phase of pearlite. As a result of this, it shows that the welding condition of Enclosed-arc welding applied to this alloy rail steel is a good condition.
Effects of the annealing parameters on the formation of ferrites transformed at low temperatures were studied in cold-rolled ultra low carbon steels with niobium and/or chromium. Niobium and chromium were found to be effective in the formation of the low temperature transformation ferrites. The low temperature transformation ferrites more easily formed when both higher annealing temperature and longer annealing time, allowing substitutional alloying elements to distribute between phases, are in combination with faster cooling rate. It was found from EBSD study that the additions of niobium or chromium resulted in the increase in the numbers of high angle grain boundaries and the decrease in those of the low angle grain boundaries in the microstructures. Both granular bainitic ferrite and bainitic ferrite were characterized by the not clearly etched grain boundaries in light microscopy because of the low angle grain boundaries.

This thesis is to improve the mechanical properties of carbon steel by the ion-nitriding, and post-heat treatment. The structures of ion-nitrided SM45C steel were changed to martensite by quenching from 730.deg. C and 800.deg. C. And then a few of the quenched specimens was tempered at 200.deg. C for 120 min. The emphasis in this study is focussed on Comparison of hardness and fatigue strength with the ion-nitrided steel. The results obtained are summerized as follows. 1. To improve the hardness and fatigue strength of ion-nitrided steels, it is effective to under take diffusion treatment for a short time at the austenite temperature(800.deg. C). 2. If ion-nitrided steel is heated for a long time at high temperature, de-nitriding occure. 3. The quenching treatment after nitriding on the carbon steel is necessary to improve the mechanical properties of the steels.
