  • Composite electrode consisting of carbon nanofiber (CNF) and cobalt oxide was prepared for supercapacitor electrode, and its electrochemical property was investigated by means of cyclic voltammetry. Cyclic voltammetric results for the composite electrode showed it had specific capacitance value of 420 F/g at 5 mV/s, which was higher than capacitance value of 180 F/g for the bare CNF. It is concluded that the capacitive property of CNF can be improved by coating cobalt oxide on it to increase the surface area of cobalt oxide.

  • In this study, we manufactured the anodized alumina oxide (AAO) template and fabricated the carbon nanofibers and manganese oxide nanofibers using AAO template for application to electrochemical capacitor. Pore diameters of the AAO template were increased from 50 to 90 nm by increasing the acid treatment time after two-step anodizing process. Furthermore nanofibers, which is fabricated by AAO template, showed uniform diameter and micro structure. It is suggested that the surface area is larger than commercial electrode material and it is enhancing the energy density by increasing the specific capacitance.

  • We have demonstrated the feasibility of using electrospinning method to fabricate long and continuous composite nanofiber sheets of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) incorporated with zinc oxide (ZnO). Such PAN/ZnO composite nanofiber sheets represent an important step toward utilizing carbon nanofibers (CNFs) as materials to achieve remarkably enhanced physico-chemical properties. In an attempt to derive these advantages, we have used a variety of techniques such as field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD) to obtain quantitative data on the materials. The CNFs produced are in the diameter range of 100 to 350 nm after carbonization at $1000^{\circ}C$. Electrical conductivity of the random CNFs was increased by increasing the concentration of ZnO. A dramatic improvement in porosity and specific surface area of the CNFs was a clear evidence of the novelty of the method used. This study indicated that the optimal ZnO concentration of 3 wt% is enough to produce CNFs having enhanced electrical and physico-chemical properties.

  • In this work, iron oxide ($Fe_3O_4$) nanoparticles were deposited on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by a simple chemical coprecipitation method and $Fe_3O_4$-decorated MWNTs (Fe-MWNTs)/polypyrrole (PPy) nanocomposites (Fe-MWNTs/PPy) were prepared by oxidation polymerization. The effect of the PPy on the electrochemical properties of the Fe-MWNTs was investigated. The structures characteristics and surface properties of MWNTs, Fe-MWNTs, and Fe-MWNTs/PPy were characterized by X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, respectively. The electrochemical performances of MWNTs, Fe-MWNTs, and Fe-MWNTs/PPy were determined by cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge/discharge characteristics in a 1.0 M sodium sulfite electrolyte. The results showed that the Fe-MWNTs/PPy electrode had typical pseudo-capacitive behavior and a specific capacitance significantly greater than that of the Fe-MWNT electrode, indicating an enhanced electrochemical performance of the Fe-MWNTs/PPy due to their high electrical properties.

  • Semiconducting carbon-based nanomaterials including single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWCNTs), multi-walled CNT(MWCNTs), graphene(GR), graphene oxide(GO), and reduced graphene oxide(RGO), are very promising sensing materials due to their large surface area, high conductivity, and ability to operate at room temperature. Despite of these advantages, the semiconducting carbon-based nanomaterials intrinsically possess crucial disadvantages compared with semiconducting metal oxide nanomaterials, such as relatively low gas response, irreversible recovery, and poor selectivity. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a variety of strategies to overcome these disadvantages and investigate principle parameters to improve gas sensing performances.

  • The performance behavior of solid oxide fuel cell using $H_2$ and CO as fuels was investigated. The power densities and impedance results showed a little variation as the ratio of $H_2$ and CO changed. However, when the pure CO was used as a fuel, area specific resistance (ASR), especially low frequency region, was increased. This might be due to carbon deposition on anode. The maximum power density was 60% lower using CO than using $H_2$. Carbon deposition reduced after constant current was applied. The SOFC performance was recovered from the carbon deposition after applying constant current during 100h.

  • The prediction of emission concentrations in a 4cycle spark ignition engine was made by considering nonuniform model with thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium and kinetic mechanism of nitric oxide. Calculation of this model shows that a temperature difference of the order of 500K can be established across he cylinder. Results of the kinetic calculation of nitric oxide show that the temperature gradient across the cylinder has a profound effect on the nitric oxide formation. The predicted values for nitric oxide, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide agree with measured ones for a variety of equivalence ratio.

  • Dyes are widely used in various industries including textile, cosmetic, paper, plastics, rubber, and coating, and their discharge into waterways causes serious environmental and health problems. Four different carbon nanostructures, graphene oxide, oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes, activated carbon and multi-walled carbon nanotubes, were used as adsorbents for the removal of Nile Blue A (NBA) dye from aqueous solution. The four carbon nanostructures were characterized by scanning electron microscope and X-ray diffractometer. The effects of various parameters were investigated. Kinetic adsorption data were analyzed using the first-order model and the pseudo-second-order model. The regression results showed that the adsorption kinetics were more accurately represented by the pseudo-second-order model. The equilibrium data for the aqueous solutions were fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms, and the equilibrium adsorption of NBA was best described by the Langmuir isotherm model. This is the first research on the removal of dye using four carbon nanostructures adsorbents.

  • The alginate-based hydrogel was prepared as a pH-sensitive drug delivery system. To enhance the drug loading capacity, activated carbon was introduced as a drug absorbent. The iron oxide was incorporated into the alginate matrix for the magnetic transferring to the target organ. The activated carbon and iron-oxide were dispersed uniformly in the alginate hydrogel. The drug release from the alginate/activated carbon composite hydrogel was carried out in various pH conditions with vitamin B12 and Lactobacillus lamnosers as model drugs. The fast and sustainable release of drug was observed in the basic condition due to the pH-sensitive solubility of alginate. The novel drug delivery system having pH-sensitive release property and magnetic movement to target place was developed by using the alginate/activated carbon composite magnetic hydrogels.

  • In this study, poly(amic acid) was prepared via a polycondensation reaction of 3,3'-dihydroxybenzidine and pyromellitic dianhydride in an N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone solution; reduced graphene oxide/polybenzoxazole (r-GO/PBO) composite films, which significantly increased the electrical conductivity, were successfully fabricated. GO was prepared from graphite using Brodie's method. The GO was used as nanofillers for the preparation of r-GO/PBO composites through an in situ polymerization. The addition of 50 wt% GO led to a significant increase in the electrical conductivity of the composite films by more than sixteen orders of magnitude compared with that of pure PBO films as a result of the electrical percolation networks in the r-GO during the thermal treatment at various temperatures within the films.
