Geomechanical assessment of reservoir and caprock in CO2 storage: A coupled THM simulation

  • Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions are rising rapidly despite efforts to curb release of such gases. One long term potential solution to offset these destructive emissions is the capture and storage of carbon dioxide. Partially depleted hydrocarbon reservoirs are attractive targets for permanent carbon dioxide disposal due to proven storage capacity and seal integrity, existing infrastructure. Optimum well completion design in depleted reservoirs requires understanding of prominent geomechanics issues with regard to rock-fluid interaction effects. Geomechanics plays a crucial role in the selection, design and operation of a storage facility and can improve the engineering performance, maintain safety and minimize environmental impact. In this paper, an integrated geomechanics workflow to evaluate reservoir caprock integrity is presented. This method integrates a reservoir simulation that typically computes variation in the reservoir pressure and temperature with geomechanical simulation which calculates variation in stresses. Coupling between these simulation modules is performed iteratively which in each simulation cycle, time dependent reservoir pressure and temperature obtained from three dimensional compositional reservoir models in ECLIPSE were transferred into finite element reservoir geomechanical models in ABAQUS and new porosity and permeability are obtained using volumetric strains for the next analysis step. Finally, efficiency of this approach is demonstrated through a case study of oil production and subsequent carbon storage in an oil reservoir. The methodology and overall workflow presented in this paper are expected to assist engineers with geomechanical assessments for reservoir optimum production and gas injection design for both natural gas and carbon dioxide storage in depleted reservoirs.

국제 배출권 거래 시장의 제도변화가 국내 비(非)CO2 CDM 사업에 미치는 영향 분석 (A Study on the impact of the changes in international emissions trade market on non-CO2 CDM projects)

  • 2012년 말 카타르 도하에서 열렸던 제18차 COP를 통해 교토의정서가 2020년까지 연장되면서 CDM, JI, ET 등의 교토 메커니즘 역시 지속하기로 결정되었다. 그러나 최근 EU ETS를 중심으로 국제 배출권거래 시장에서 일어났던 몇몇 제도변화와 배출권 가격의 하락으로 인해 CDM 프로젝트들은 사업 지속가능성 측면에서 위기에 처해 있다. 특히 국내 비(非)$CO_2$ 온실가스 관련 CDM 사업들이 가장 직접적인 영향을 받았다. 본 연구에서는 국제 시장에서 거래되고 있는 배출권들에 대한 현 상황과 가격 변화를 살펴보고, 국내의 대표적인 비(非)$CO_2$ 관련 CDM 사업에 대한 사례분석을 통해 배출권거래 시장의 제도변화가 어떤 과정을 통해 해당 사업에 영향을 미쳤는지를 살펴보았다. 본 논문의 정책적 함의는 크게 두 가지로 요약될 수 있다. 첫째, 2015년 국내 배출권 거래제도 시행을 앞두고 온실가스 저감기술에 대한 활용과 투자 환경이 활발하게 조성되기 위한 정책지원 방향을 제시한다. 둘째, 양자 크레딧 제도와 같이 기존 CDM 사업을 보완하는 정책들이 ODA 방식과 연계될 경우 기업들이 해당 기술에 대한 투자 시 불확실성을 줄이고 보다 폭넓은 선택이 가능함을 밝힌다.

Tensile response of steel/CFRP adhesive bonds for the rehabilitation of civil structures

  • There is a growing need for the development and implementation of new methods for the rapid and cost-effective rehabilitation of deteriorating steel structural components to offset the drawbacks related to welding and/or bolting in the field. Carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites provide a potential alternative as externally bonded patches for strengthening and repair of metallic structural members for building and bridge systems. This paper describes results of an investigation of tensile and fatigue response of steel/CFRP joints simulating scenarios of strengthening and crack-patching. It is shown that appropriately designed schemes, even when fabricated with levels of inaccuracy as could be expected in the field, can provide significant strain relief and load transfer capability. A simplified elasto-plastic closed form solution for stress analysis is presented, and validated experimentally. It is shown that the bond development length remains constant in the linear range, whereas it increases as the adhesive is deformed plastically. Fatigue resistance is shown to be at least comparable with the requirements for welded cover plates without attendant decreases in stiffness and strength.

  • This research was conducted as a fundamental study to apply tailored blank welding technique into automotive production process. The materials used in this study were 2.0mm thickness low carbon steel sheets and 1.2mm Zn-coated low carbon steel sheets. To ensure the reproducibility and to consider various factors, experiments were. conducted by applying Taguchi experimental method with 6 factors. Every welding process was repeated 3 times to offset the effect of uncontrolled factors. Elongation and LDH(Limited Dome Height)were measured to evaluate formability of specimens and Optical microscopy, XRD, SEM, and EDS analysis were performed to observe the microstructures and to determine the solidification mode in the weld. The elongation of specimen welded with optimum condition was 83% of base metal, and LDH was 84% of base metal. In case of laser treated specimen where Zn coating was removed, elongation was 85% of base metal, and LDH was 85% of base metal. In fusion zone, phases were consisted of quasi-polygonal ferrite, banitic ferrite, and martensite.

레저휴양공간의 수목 추가식재가 탄소흡수기능 향상에 미치는 효과 (Estimating Carbon Sequestration by Planting a Leisure-Recreation Place in Gangwon Province, Korea)

  • 본 연구는 강원도에 위치한 오크밸리 관광단지 내 36홀 골프코스를 대상으로 골프장의 추가식재가 탄소흡수량을 얼마나 증가시키는지를 추정하였다. 보식 혹은 신규 식재에 의한 탄소흡수량은 현지답사와 고해상도 항공사진을 활용하여 식재가능 지역을 분석하고 적정 식재 밀도를 파악한 후 바이오매스 상대생장법을 이용하여 계산하였다. 연구대상 골프코스 중 식재지는 전체 조사대상 면적의 30.3%를 차지하고 있었으며 나머지 69.7%는 잔디 식재지, 수면, 모래땅, 기타 시설지역이었다. 잔디식재 지역 중 식재가 가능한 지역은 총 $106,101m^2$(전체면적의 6.0%)로 분석되었고 기존 수목 식재지 중 식재밀도가 현저히 낮은 지역은 $177,531m^2$(전체 면적의 10.1%)를 차지하고 있었다. 신규식재가 가능한 지역은 흉고직경 10cm의 수목을 0.3주/$m^2$의 밀도로, 추가적인 식재가 가능한 지역은 동일규격의 수목을 0.2주/$m^2$의 밀도로 식재하는 것을 가정한 결과 추가 식재 가능 수목은 총 67,336주로 나타났다. 식재수종을 신갈나무로 가정할 때 최초 식재 후 1년 간 총 탄소흡수량은 392.9tC/yr으로 예측되었다. 연간 탄소흡수량은 식재 후 15년째에 총 440.5tC/yr로 정점에 이르는 것으로 분석되었다. 이를 오크밸리 관광단지 중 연구대상지 일원의 연간 탄소배출량과 비교할 때 식재 후 1년째 탄소흡수량은 12.5%에 이르며, 신규로 식재한 수목의 탄소흡수량이 정점에 이르는 조성 후 15년이 경과한 시점에서는 연간 탄소배출량의 14.0%까지 증가하는 것으로 예측되었다.

  • 전세계적으로 2015년 파리기후협약에서 정한 목표에 따라 2050년까지 탄소중립을 위하여 각 국가는 감축목표를 수립 및 선언하고, "장기 저탄소 발전전략" (Long-term low greenhouse gas Emission Development Strategies, LEDS)을 수립, 감축 목표 설정을 위한 로드맵 등을 발표하고 있다. 국제사회의 탄소중립사회 전환 가속화에 따라 2020년말까지 128개국이 탄소중립을 선언하였으며, G20 회원국을 중심으로 지속적으로 탄소중립선언이 확대되고 있다. 우리나라도 2020년 12월 탄소중립의 능동적 대응을 통해 탄소중립과 경제성장, 국민 삶의 질 향상을 동시 달성하는 기반 마련을 위한 "2050 탄소중립 추진전략"을 발표하였고, 이를 위한 정책과제를 단계적으로 추진하고 있다. 우리나라에서 온실가스 감축을 위하여 시행되고 있는 온실가스에너지 목표관리제 및 온실가스 배출권거래제 상쇄제도 등 의무감축제도의 영역에서 벗어나 있어 종합적인 탄소관리는 미흡하며, 현재 광해방지사업으로 인한 이산화탄소배출량을 정량화한 사례는 없다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 전세계적인 탄소중립의 관심과 정부 정책 기조에 따라 탄소 중립 실현을 위해서 한국광해광업공단의 주 업무인 광해방지사업에 대하여 국내외 탄소배출량 산정 방법으로 제시된 표준방법을 검토하고, 광해방지사업에 적합한 탄소배출량 산정 방법을 제시하고자 하였다.

탄소배출권거래제도에서의 공급망 조정 모형 (Supply Chain Coordination Under the Cap-and-trade Emissions Regulation)

  • This paper considers a supply chain consisting of a manufacturer under the cap-and-trade emissions regulation and a permit supplier. We study joint production quantity and investment in reducing permit production cost decisions for centralized and decentralized supply chains. We formulate two supply chain contracts with aims to coordinate the decentralized supply chain; wholesale price contract and cost-sharing contract. Under the cost-sharing contract, the manufacturer shares a part of the investment in reducing permit production cost and then is allowed to purchase emission permit at a lower price. We analytically find that the proposed cost-sharing contract with reasonable parameters can coordinate the supply chain whereas the wholesale price contract is not desirable to achieve the system-wide profit. Numerical example is followed to support the analysis.

Printed black internal conducting electrodes for flexible bistable cholesteric displays

  • We report flexible, bistable cholesteric displays utilizing polyester (PET) substrates with printed internal black electrodes. The black electrodes consist of carbon ink dispersed in butyl carbitol using a patented roll-to-roll gravure-offset printing. A transparent conducting polymer printed on PET serves as the counter electrode. The electro-optic material is a chiral nematic mixture dispersed in a low-concentration polymer binder. The device can be switched between scattering (black) and reflective (vibrant green) states upon application of an electric pulse. The internal black electrode enhances the contrast of the display and simplifies the roll-to-roll manufacture of flexible displays.

Seasonal Distribution, Egg Production and Feeding by the Marine Copepod Calanus sinicus in Asan Bay, Korea

  • Seasonality in abundance and egg production was investigated for Calanus sinicus in Asan Bay, Korea, and feeding effort was measured in the laboratory condition. Although abundances of this species in this bay showed only one Peak in spring, egg Production showed two peaks, spring and fall, in this bay. Potential of year-round egg Production was also found. Food availability judged by the particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration was usually more than enough in this bay. High egg Production in fall resulted in spring Peak in abundance. But high egg Production in spring did not result in summer or fall Peak in abundance. Low abundances in summer and fall were believed to be the result of long range horizontal migration out to the central Part of the Yellow Sea. The highest average egg Production by the Population of this species was 16.3 eggs female-'day-'. Maximum e99 Production by an individual was 39.0 e99s female$^{-1}$ day$^{-1}$, which yielded 30.7% of specific egg Production rate in terms of body carbon content with the carbon contents of 44.44$^{\mu}$gC and 0.35 $^{\mu}$gC for individual adult female and egg, respectively. Clearance rate (F) measured in the laboratory condition decreased exponentially with the increase of food concentrations, as expected. The asymptote of F was 3.17 ml copepod$^{-1}$ h$^{-1}$. When this value and the minimum concentration of POC measured in the field were applied under the assumption of continuous feeding in the nature, the calculated gross efficient of egg production was 41.6% in case of average egg production of the population. Violation of the assumption of diurnal feeding rhythm and application of the minimum concentration of POC may offset the influence on calculation each other.

Web crippling strength of cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections with web openings subjected to interior-one-flange loading condition

  • In cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections, web openings are becoming increasingly popular. Such openings, however, result in the sections becoming more susceptible to web crippling, especially under concentrated loads applied near the web opening. This paper presents the results of a finite element parametric study into the effect of circular web openings on the web crippling strength of cold-formed stainless steel lipped channel-sections for the interior-one-flange (IOF) loading condition. This involves a bearing load applied to the top flange of a length of member, away from the end supports. The cases of web openings located centred beneath the bearing load (i.e. beneath the bearing plate delivering the load) and offset to the bearing plate, are considered. Three grades of stainless steel are considered: duplex EN1.4462, austenitic EN1.4404 and ferretic EN1.4003. In total, 2218 finite element models were analyzed. From the results of the parametric study, strength reduction factors for load bearing capacity are determined, where these reduction factors are applied to the bearing capacity calculated for a web without openings, to take account the influence of the web openings. The strength reduction factors are first compared to equations recently proposed for cold-formed carbon steel lipped channel-sections. It is shown that for the case of the duplex grade, the strength reduction factor equations for cold-formed carbon steel are conservative but only by 2%. However, for the cases of the austentic and ferritic grades, the cold-formed carbon steel equations are around 9% conservative. New strength reduction factor equations are proposed for all three stainless steel grades.
