  • Carbon nanotube oscillators encapsulating copper nanowire were investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. The excess forces due to the carbon-carbon van der Waals interactions are higher than the excess force due to carbon-copper interactions. And the masses of copper atoms are higher than those of carbon atoms. So, the carbon atoms are easier accelerated than the copper atoms. When the encapsulated copper nanowire deforms the encapsulating nanotube, the frequency can not be estimated by the mass-frequency dependence in classical oscillation theory.

  • Based on mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA), a novel technique to fabricate carbon nanowire (CNW) arrays is presented for a possible use of porous carbon electrode in electrochemical energy storage applications. PDA can give more porosity and nitrogen-doping effect to carbon electrodes, since it has high graphitic carbon yield characteristic and rich amine functionalities. Using such outstanding properties, the applicability of PDA for electrochemical energy storage devices was investigated. To achieve this, the decoration of the CNW arrays on carbon fiber surface was performed to increase the surface area for storage of electrical charge and the chemical active sites. Here, zinc oxide (ZnO) nanowire (NW) arrays were hydrothermally grown on the carbon fiber surface and then, PDA was coated on ZnO NWs. Finally, high temperature annealing was performed to carbonize PDA coating layers. For higher energy density, manganese oxide ($MnO_x$) nanoparticles (NPs), were deposited on the carbonized PDA NW arrays. The enlarged surface area induced by carbon nanowire arrays led to a 4.7-fold enhancement in areal capacitance compared to that of bare carbon fibers. The capacitance of nanowire-decorated electrodes reached up to $105.7mF/cm^2$, which is 59 times higher than that of pristine carbon fibers.

  • Si nanowire/multiwalled carbon nanotube nanocomposite arrays were synthesized. Vertically aligned Si nanowire arrays were fabricated by Ag nanodendrite-assisted wet chemical etching of n-type wafers using $HF/AgNO_3$ solution. The composite structure was synthesized by formation of a sheath of carbon multilayers on a Si nanowire template surface through a thermal CVD process under various conditions. The results of Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and high resolution transmission electron microcopy demonstrate that the obtained nanocomposite has a Si nanowire core/carbon nanotube shell structure. The remarkable feature of the proposed method is that the vertically aligned Si nanowire was encapsulated with a multiwalled carbon nanotube without metal catalysts, which is important for nanodevice fabrication. It can be expected that the introduction of Si nanowires into multiwalled carbon nanotubes may significantly alter their electronic and mechanical properties, and may even result in some unexpected material properties. The proposed method possesses great potential for fabricating other semiconductor/CNT nanocomposites.

  • $SnO_2@carbon$ tube-core nanowire was synthesized via a facile self-organized method, which was in situ by one step via Chemical Vapor Deposition. The resulting composite was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscope. The diameter of the single nanowire is between 5 nm and 60 nm, while the length would be several tens to hundreds of micrometers. Then X-ray diffraction pattern shows that the composition is amorphous carbon and tin dioxide. Transmission electron microscope images indicate that the nanowire consists of two parts, the outer carbon tube and the inner tin dioxide core. Meanwhile, the possible growth mechanism of $SnO_2@carbon$ tube-core nanowire is also discussed.

  • $SnO_2-CoO$/carbon-coated CoO core/shell nanowire composites were synthesized by using electrospinning and hydrothermal methods. In order to obtain $SnO_2-CoO$/carbon-coated CoO core/shell nanowire composites, $SnO_2-Co_3O_4$ nanowire composites and $SnO_2-Co_3O_4$/polygonal $Co_3O_4$ core/shell nanowire composites are also synthesized. To demonstrate their structural, chemical bonding, and morphological properties, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were carried out. These results indicated that the morphologies and structures of the samples were changed from $SnO_2-Co_3O_4$ nanowires having cylindrical structures to $SnO_2-Co_3O_4/Co_3O_4$ core/shell nanowires having polygonal structures after a hydrothermal process. At last, $SnO_2-CoO$/carbon-coated CoO core/shell nanowire composites having irregular and high surface area are formed after carbon coating using a polypyrrole (PPy). Also, there occur phases transformation of cobalt phases from $Co_3O_4$ to CoO during carbon coating using a PPy under a argon atmosphere.

  • The structural and magnetic properties of functionalized carbon chains doped with 4d transition metals, such as Ru, Rh, and Pd, were investigated using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method. The carbon nanowire doped with Ru exhibited a ferromagnetic ground state with a sizable magnetic moment, while those doped with Rh and Pd had nonmagnetic ground states. For the Ru-doped chain, the density of states at the Fermi level showed large spin polarization, which suggests that the doped nanowire could be used for spintronic applications.

  • Nondestructive damage sensing and load transferring mechanism of Ni nanowire strands and multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composites were investigated using electro-micromechanical techniques. MWCNT composite was especially prepared for high volume contents, 50 vol % of reinforcement. Electro-micromechanical techniques were applied to measure apparent modulus and contact resistance of Ni nanocomposites with their alignment and different diameters, and adding contents. Applied cyclic load affected on apparent modulus and electrical properties on nanocomposites due to various inherent properties of each CNMs. Contact resistivity on humidity sensing was a good indicator for monitoring as for multifunctional applications. Further study on actuation as well as sensing will be investigated for the following work continuously.

  • A roll-to-roll (R2R) continuous manufacturing system for a carbon-nanotube (CNT)-/silver-nanowire (AgNW)- based large-area transparent conductive film was introduced in this study. The systemic guidelines of the R2R slot-die coating process including roll eccentricity, wrap angle, pump accuracy, and blower influence were discussed. To simulate the coating phenomenon, we investigated the governing parameters of the coating process by incorporating the estimated relative thickness that was defined by combining the viscocapillary model and volume model. By using experimental and mathematical approaches, an excellent transparent conductive layer with a $40{\Omega}/{\Box}$ sheet resistance and 88 % transmittance was obtained; moreover, a dimensionless number identifies the correlation between the transparent conductive film and the anti-reflection film.

  • Hetero-junction sheet actuator composed of carbon nanotubes and $V_{2}O_5$ nanowires were demonstrated in a bimetal configuration. The successive filtration of $V_{2}O_5$ nanowire solution followed by carbon nanotube dispersed water solution in the same way produced a dark-gray colored sheet. A significant actuation was observed in sodium chloride electrolyte solution with a bending direction to the carbon nanotube side at the positive bias voltage against the copper counter-electrode. As the frequency of the applied voltage increased, the amplitudes decreased, indicating a rather slow response of the hetero-film actuator in the electrolyte solution. The hybrid structure enabled an easy fabrication of the film actuator with the enhanced efficiencies.

  • Half-metallic nanostructure is highly applicable in the field of Spintronics and electronic device technology. We examine the electronic properties of a ferrocene-based nanowire as a possible candidate for a half-metallic nanostructure using VASP and SIESTA. Ferrocene-based nanowire shows high stability in both binding energy simulation and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The density of states (DOS) and the projected DOS of the ferrocene-based nanowire indicate that one-dimensional clustering of ferrocene molecules can be explained because of p-d orbital hybridization between iron and carbon. Half-metallic property and energy dispersion at the Fermi level due to one-dimensional structure is also observed from the DOS results.
