The effect of substituting potato by-products based silage (PBS) for concentrates on ruminal fermentation, methane production and nitrogen utilization in Holstein steers was evaluated. Three growing Holstein steers ($490{\pm}19kg$, initial body weight) were used in a $3{\times}3$ Latin square experiment with three experimental diets in which PBS was included at (1) 0, (2) 19 and (3) 27%, on a dry matter basis, replacing concentrates and wheat bran. Increasing replacement levels of PBS slightly increased dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), NDF and ADF intakes by the steers (p<0.05). Inclusion of PBS at 19% increased crude protein (CP) digestibility of the experimental diets compared with the control (p<0.05). Substitution with PBS increased ADF digestibility and nitrogen retention (p<0.05), but did not affect energy retention. Energy loss as methane ranged between 5.0 and 6.1% of the total gross energy intake. There were no significant differences in carbon dioxide and methane production among all PBS levels, while daily methane production numerically increased with PBS inclusion. Substituting PBS for concentrates did not significantly affect ruminal pH and ammonia N concentration. Total VFA concentration, VFA molar proportions and blood metabolites were also unaffected by PBS replacement. These results suggest that substitution of PBS up to 27% of diet dry matter did not significantly increase methane production and was equal or superior to concentrates in ADF digestibility and nitrogen retention for growing steers.
The effect of sodium hydroxide treatment on some physicochemical properties of zeolite mordenite mineral was studied with chemical analyses, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analyses, infrared analysis, measurement of carbon dioxide adsorption and gas chromatography. Mordenite mineral from tuffaceous rocks in Yeongil and Wolsung area was used as a starting material and treated with 0.1-5N NaOH aqueous solution at about $95^{\circ}C$ in the water bath for three hours. At the concentration of sodium hydroxide below 0.5N, all chemical compositions in the tuff were virtually insoluble and the mordenite structure did not change. At the concentration above 1N, the chemical compositions such as silica, alumina, etc., were dissolved. The dissolution ratio of silica was lager than that of alumina, and the ratio of silica to alumina in the tuff decreased sharply in the concentration range of 2 to 3N. Intensity of X-ray diffraction peak of mordenite (202) plane and the adsorbed amount of carbon dioxide also decreased with the increasing concentration of sodium hydroxide above 1N. These decreases corresponded to the degree of mordenite structure collapsed. The separation of gas chromatography of nitrogen, oxygen and carbon monoxide was not affected by the sodium hydroxide treatment, but elution peaks of methane and krypton tended to be broadened and their retention time was shortened. The elution peaks of both methane and krypton tended to be overlapped with those of nitrogen and oxygen.
Soil organic carbon (SOC) retention has gradually gotten attention due to the need for mitigation of increased atmospheric carbon dioxide and the simultaneous increase in crop productivity. We estimated the statistical maximum value of soil organic carbon (SOC) fixed by clay content using the Korean detailed soil map database. Clay content is a major factor determining SOC of subsoil because it influences the vertical mobility and adsorption capacity of dissolved organic matter. We selected 1,912 soil data of B and C horizons from 13 soil series, Sangju, Jigog, Jungdong, Bonryang, Anryong, Banho, Baegsan, Daegog, Yeongog, Bugog, Weongog, Gopyeong, and Bancheon, mainly distributed in Korean upland. The ranges of SOC and clay content were $0-40g\;kg^{-1}$ and 0 - 60%, respectively. Soils having more than 25% clay content had much lower SOC in subsoil than topsoil, probably due to low vertical mobility of dissolved organic carbon. The statistical analysis of SOC storage potential of upland subsoil, performed using 90%, 95%, and 99% maximum values in cumulative SOC frequency distribution in a range of clay content, revealed that these results could be applicable to soils with 1% - 25% of clay content. The 90% SOC maximum values, closest to the inflection point, at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 25% of clay contents were $7g\;kg^{-1}$, $10g\;kg^{-1}$, $12g\;kg^{-1}$, and $13g\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. We expect that the statistical analysis of SOC maximum values for different clay contents could contribute to quantifying the soil carbon sink capacity of Korean upland soils.

$CO_2$ emission has been gradually increased due to rising fossil fuel use. A gliding arc plasma scrubber (GAPS) was proposed to destruct $CO_2$. For optimum design of GAPS, a CFD analysis has been conducted in different configuration for the system. The parameters considered included gas injection velocity at the nozzle and gas flow rate to gap between electrodes. The reactor configuration affected velocity fields which caused changes in the mixture fraction and the retention time. The mixing effect of $CO_2$ and supplied gas ($CH_4$ and steam) was enhanced by installing a orifice baffle. This revealed that the orifice baffle is effective in $CO_2$ conversion by positioning the reactants in the gas into the center of plasma discharge.
This study presents the effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the characteristics of emission of three major greenhouse gases (GHGs) including $CH_4$, $CO_2$ and $N_2O$ during operation of a sequencing batch reactor for aerobic oxidation of methane with denitrification (AeOM-D SBR). Dissolved $N_2O$ concentration increased, leveled-off and slightly decreased as the HRT increased from 0.25 to 1d. Concentration of the dissolved $N_2O$ was higher at the shorter HRT, which was highly associated with the lowered C/N ratio. A longer HRT resulted in a higher C/N ratio with a sufficient carbon source produced by methanotrophs via methane oxidation, which provided a favorable condition for reducing $N_2O$ formation. With a less formation of the dissolved $N_2O$, $N_2O$ emission rate was lower at a longer HRT condition due to the lower C/N ratio. Opposite to the $N_2O$ emission, emission rates of $CH_4$ and $CO_2$ were higher at a longer HRT. Longer HRT resulted in the greater total GHGs emission as $CO_2$ equivalent which was doubled when the HRT increased from 0.5d to 1.0 d. Contribution of $CH_4$ onto the total GHGs emission was most dominant accounting for 98 - 99% compared to that of $N_2O$ (< 2%).

In this study, commercial pellet type sorbents for the collection of $CO_2$ from a local municipal waste incinerator were prepared and characterized in terms of adsorption efficiency by varying the operating conditions of a field process. The concentration of $CO_2$ in the flue gas ranged from 8 to 10%, which entered the test packed bed. As a result of this experiment, the sorbent procured from A-company, which is mainly composed of calcium compounds, showed the highest adsorption efficiency. The regeneration efficiency was fairly low, however. It also was found that based on adsorption breakthrough time, the relatively low flow rate of 10 LPM into the bed allowed higher collection efficiency. The higher flow rate of 40 LPM, on the other hand, tended to decrease the retention of the adsorption.
Background: Firefighters are required to use self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), which impairs ventilatory mechanics. We hypothesized that firefighters have elevated arterial $CO_2$ when using SCBA. Methods: Firefighters and controls performed a maximal exercise test on a cycle ergometer and two graded exercise tests (GXTs) at 25%, 50%, and 70% of their maximal aerobic power, once with a SCBA facemask and once with protective clothing and full SCBA. Results: Respiratory rate increased more in controls than firefighters. Heart rate increased as a function of oxygen consumption ($V_{O_2}$) more in controls than firefighters. End-tidal $CO_2$ ($ETCO_2$) during the GXTs was not affected by work rate in either group for either condition but was higher in firefighters at all work rates in both GXTs. SCBA increased $ETCO_2$ in controls but not firefighters. Conclusions: The present study showed that when compared to controls, firefighters' hypoventilate during a maximal test and GXT. The hypoventilation resulted in increased $ETCO_2$, and presumably increased arterial $CO_2$, during exertion. It is proposed that firefighters have altered $CO_2$ sensitivity due to voluntary hypoventilation during training and work. Confirmation of low $CO_2$ sensitivity and the consequence of this on performance and long-term health remain to be determined.
The molecular structure of sulfur compounds and the retention relationship are studied by gas chromatography. Analyzed sulfur compounds are, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, carbon disulfide, ethyl mercaptan, dimethyl sulfide, iso-propyl mercaptan, normal propyl mercaptan, ethyl methyl sulfide, tert-butyl mercaptan, tetrahydrothiophene, thiophene, and 2-chlorothiophene. Multiple linear regression explains the retention relationship of molecular descriptors. In GC the temperature program is 30$^{\circ}C$ held for 10.5 min, and then increased to 150$^{\circ}C$ at a rate 15$^{\circ}C$/min. Predicted equation for relative retention time (RRT) using SAS program is as follows; $RRT=0.121bp+14.39dp-8.94dp^2+0.0741sqmw-35.78\; (N=8,\; R^2=0.989, \;Variance=0.175,\;F=66.21)$. RRTs are function of boiling point, the square root of molecular weight, molecular dipole moment, and boiling point effects mostly on RRT. The RRT is maximized at the molecular dipole moment of 0.805D, when using nonpolar columns. The planar and highly symmetric compounds are eluted slowly. The square, of correlation coefficient $(R^2)$ using SAS program, is 0.989, and the variance is 0.175 in training sets. For three sulfur compounds, the variance between observed RRTs and predicted RRTs is 0.432 in testing sets.
Mediated electrochemical oxidation (MEO) is an aqueous process which oxidizes organics electrochemicallly at low temperatures and pressures. The useful process can be used to treat mixed wastes containing hazardous organics. This paper have studied MEO of ethylene glycol (EG) in nitric acids by Fe(III)/Fe(II) and Co(III)/Co(II) system. It investigated current density, supporting electrolyte concentration, hydraulic retention time, removal efficiency of EG by MEO. Removal efficiency of EG by MEO was superior in Co(III)/Co(II) redox system than Fe(III)/Fe(II) redox system, where MEO removal efficiency was 100 percent. In case of EG, the reactions were fast and good yields of carbon dioxide formation was observed.

The objective of this study was to investigate the proper conditions of calcination and calcium extraction from powdered oyster shell. The physical characteristics such as particle size distribution, surface morphology, and thermal gravity were examined. The following result were obtained. As the powdered oyster shell was ignited in high temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ to $950^{\circ}C$, the calcination reactions was effectively progressed. The amount of weight loss during calcination would be matched with the generation of carbon dioxide gas. In the calcination of powdered oyster shell, the amount of weight loss increased according to the increased of calcination temperature and the decrease of mean particle size. It was founded that the proper temperature and retention time of calcination was $850^{\circ}C$ and 40 minute. In the extraction of calcium into liquid form using acid addition, the calcination oyster shell was more effective than the non-calcinated shell. The liquid calcium extraction technique using the calcinated oyster shell needed more researches considering cost evaluation.
