  • The purpose of this study was to assess functioni fo urban greenspace to reduce atmospheric CO\sub 2\ concentration. The study quantified carbon storage in urban greenspace and carbon emission by fossil fuel consumptio in Chuncheon. The amount of carbon storage in vegetation by land use type was 0.02kg/$m^2$ for commercial land, 4.36kg/$m^2$ for natural land, and 0.54kg/$m^2$ for the other urban lands. In 1994, total amount of carbon emission by fossil fuel consumption was about 257,358 metric tons, and the per capita carbon emission was 1.4 metric ton. Total amount of carbon storage in vegetation was 42,942 metric tons, approximately 17% of the carbon emission. This study excluded quantification of carbon storage in soils. The role of urban greenspace to sequester atomspheric carbon might be much greater, if a soil greenspace to sequester atmospheric carbon might be much greater, if a soil greenspace to sequester atmospheric carbon might be much greater, if a soil carbon storage is included quantification of carbon storage is included. However, increasing coverage of trees and managing them for healthy growth would not be sufficient for avoiding adverse impacts by future climate change. Additional measures should be followed such as an increase of energy use efficiency and development of substitute energy.

  • In this paper, thermal comfort and ventilation performance characteristics in the lecture room with the ventilation system and two different air-conditioning systems, system air-conditioner or fan coil unit, were evaluated by experimental and numerical methods. We compared the measured data with the computational results of the predicted mean vote and carbon dioxide concentration. Additionally the ventilation effectiveness was calculated numerically. From a viewpoint of the uniformity of PMVs in the lecture room, the thermal distribution performance of the system air-conditioner was more effective than the fan coil unit. Carbon dioxide concentration and ventilation effectiveness were barely affected by the type of the air-conditioning system.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the performance of a membrane bioreactor filled with high concentration of powdered activated carbon (HCPAC-MBR) to reduce DBPs at the drinking water treatment. The pilot system was installed after the rapid sand filtration process whose plant was the conventional treatment process. The removal efficiencies of DBPs were measured during pilot operation period of 2 years. HAA and THM removal rates could be maintained around 80~90% without any troubles and then tremendous reduction of HAA and THM reactivity were observed more than 52%. The average removal rate of HAA formation potential (FP) and THM formation potential (FP) were 70.5% and 67.6% respectively. It is clear that the PAC membrane bioreactor is highly applicable for advanced water treatment to control DBPs.

  • Effects of elevated air temperature and carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) concentration on the leaf surface structures were investigated in Liriodendron tulipifera (yellow poplar) and Populus tomentiglandulosa (Suwon poplar). Cuttings of the two tree species were exposed to elevated air temperatures at $27/22^{\circ}C$ (day/night) and $CO_2$ concentrations at 770/790 ppm for three months. The abaxial leaf surface of yellow poplar under an ambient condition ($22/17^{\circ}C$ and 380/400 ppm) had stomata and epicuticular waxes (transversely ridged rodlets). A prominent increase in the density of epicuticular waxes was found on the leaves under the elevated condition. Meanwhile, the abaxial leaf surface of Suwon poplar under an ambient condition was covered with long trichomes. The leaves under the elevated condition possessed a higher amount of long trichomes than those under the ambient condition. These results suggest that the two poplar species may change their leaf surface structures under the elevated air temperature and $CO_2$ concentration condition for acclimation of increased photosynthesis.

  • This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of graphene based carbon dioxide ($CO_2$) gas sensors. Graphene was synthesized by thermal decomposition of SiC. The resistivity $CO_2$ gas sensors were fabricated by pure graphene and graphene decorated Au nanoparticles (NPs). The Au NPs with size of 10 nm were decorated on graphene. Au electrode deposited on the graphene showed Ohmic contact and the sensors resistance changed following to various $CO_2$ concentrations. Resulting in resistance sensor using pure graphene can detect minimum of 100 ppm $CO_2$ concentration at $50^{\circ}C$, whereas Au/graphene can detect minimum 2 ppm $CO_2$ concentration at same at $50^{\circ}C$. Moreover, Au NPs catalyst improved the sensitivity of the graphene based $CO_2$ sensors. The responses of pure graphene and Au/graphene are 0.04% and 0.24%, respectively, at $50^{\circ}C$ with 500 ppm $CO_2$ concentration. The optimum working temperature of $CO_2$ sensors is at $75^{\circ}C$.

  • We have studied the catalytic combustion of soot particulates over perovskite-type oxides prepared by malic acid method, The catalysts were modified to enhance the activity by substitution of metal into A or B site of perovskite oxide. In addition, the reaction conditions such as temperature and $O_2$ concentration were investigated. The partial substitution of alkali metals into A site in the $LaMnO_3$ catalyst, enhanced the catalytic activity in the combustion of carbon particulate and the activity was shown in the order: Cs > K > Na. For the $La_{1-x}Cs_{x}MnO_{3}$ catalysts, the catalytic activity showed the maximum value with x=0.3 but no more increase on the catalytic activity was shown with x > 0.3. For the $La_{0.8}Cs_{0.2}MnO_{3}$ catalyst, the substitution of Fe or Ni increased the ignition temperature. The ignition temperature decreased with an increase of $O_2$ concentration, however, no more increase in the catalytic activity was shown with $O_2$ concentration > 0.2. The introduction of NO into reactants showed no effect on the catalytic activity.

  • A study on the performance of a Diesel engine with various intake gas compositions other than that of air are performed experimentally. In this study, the concentrations of each of oxygen, nitorgen, carbon dioxide, and argon are changed and their effects on the performance of the engine are investigated parametrically. The experiments are performed at constant engine speed condition, and main measured parameters are cylinder pressure, intake gas compositions, fuel consumption rate. Increase of oxygen concentration up to 24% improved the performance of the engine generally. The adverse effect was observed when the oxygen concentration was increased over 24%. Increase of carbon dioxide concentration degraded the performance of the engine, mainly due to the lower specific heat ratio of carbon dioxide. Adding argon gas to the intake gas improved the overall performance. Finally, it is found that two most influencing factors affecting the performance of the Diesel engine in this study of intake gas composition variation are ignition delay and specific heat ratio of the intake gas.

  • This work is a fundamental study for applying hybrid process coupling adsorption with microfiltration to waste-water treatment. Phenol was separated by adsorption on powdered activated carbon, adsorbed phenol with activated carbon was separated by microfiltration. As the particle size in suspension increased, filtration resistance decreased, and effect of particle concentration on resistance was less pronounced. The rate of uptake was greatly dependent on the degree of phenol loading. For a smaller amounts of activated carbon, the change of permeate concentration before break point and phenol loading with time were steeper than in the case of large amounts. Permeate concentration before break point decreased with decreasing particle size, this could be due to the increase of outer surface of particle and film mass transfer coefficient.

  • The objective of this study was to reduce negative elements such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from fulvic acid using supercritical carbon dioxide ($SCO_2$) and to measure concentration and chromaticity of fulvic acid before and after treatment of $SCO_2$. Fulvic acid was treated at different experimental conditions; pressures of 100, 120 and 150 bar at $40^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. The composition of VOCs from fulvic acid was evaluated by GC-MS analysis, and the concentration was quantitatively analyzed using UV-spectrometer from fulvic acid at different experimental conditions. Also, the chromaticity of fulvic acid was evaluated using spectrophotometer. Though concentration and chromaticity of fulvic acid were not nearly changed, the VOCs from fulvic acid was remarkably decreased at 150 bar, $40^{\circ}C$ and 2 h. Reduction of VOCs through the $SCO_2$ is expected to contribute to quality improvement of fulvic acid.

  • Cadmium (Cd) adsorption onto the activated carbon containing hydroxyapatite (HAP) was investigated in batch experiments and response surface methodology (RSM) using the Box-Behnken methods were applied to the experimental results. Cd adsorption with different HAP mass ratio of from 10% to 30%. With more HAP, Cd was more adsorbed. These results suggest that the higher HAP mass causes an increase of the ion exchange potential of the HAP sorbent. Equilibrium experimental results from Cd adsorption was fitted to Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. Cd adsorption on HAP sorbent were found to follow the Freundlich isotherm model well in the initial adsorbate concentration range. Also, Cd adsorption was a function of the HAP mass ratio ($x_1$), initial Cd concentration ($x_2$), and initial pH ($x_3$) from the application of the RSM. Statistical results showed the order of significance of the independent variables to be initial Cd concentration > HAP mass ratio > initial pH.
