The present study investigates the feasibility of nitrogenous heterocyclic compounds (NHCs) (Pyridine-Quinoline) degradation by catalytic wet peroxidation (CWPO) in the presence of nanoscale zerovalent iron supported on granular activated carbon (nFe0/GAC) using statistical optimization technique. Response surface methodology (RSM) in combination with Box-Behnken design (BBD) was used to optimize the process parameters of CWPO process such as initial pH, catalyst dose, hydrogen peroxide dose, initial concentration of pyridine (Py) and quinolone (Qn) were chosen as the main variables, and total organic carbon (TOC) removal and total Fe leaching were selected as the investigated response. The optimization of process parameters by desirability function showed the ~85% of TOC removal with process condition of initial solution pH 3.5, catalyst dose of 0.55 g/L, hydrogen peroxide concentration of 0.34 mmol, initial concentration of Py 200 mg/L and initial concentration of Qn 200 mg/L. Further, for TOC removal the analysis of variance results of the RSM revealed that all parameter i.e. initial pH, catalyst dose, hydrogen peroxide dose, initial concentration of Py and initial concentration of Qn were highly significant according to the p values (p < 0.05). The quadratic model was found to be the best fit for experimental data. The present study revealed that BBD was reliable and effective for the determination of the optimum conditions for CWPO of NHCs (Py-Qn).
This study investigated the influence of the indoor CO2concentration level on sleep quality by polysomnography(PSG). One healthy female subject was selected among several subjects based on RI(Risk Indicator) value and BMI(Body Mass Index) value to evaluate judging the risk level of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea. To get the impact of the indoor carbon dioxide concentration to sleep quality, both CO2concentration levels were set up using ventilating form with 700~800 ppm and 2000~3000 ppm. Other environments were controlled in the comfortable sleep scope by previous researches. To measure the sleep quality, measurements have carried on polysomnography(PSG). In conclusion, it have shown that high carbon dioxide concentration leads arousal effect about central nervous system and to sustaining dreams and excited condition by bring about REM sleep split phenomenon.
The influence of disinfectant on bacterial concentration and carbon usage patterns by Biolog GN plates were investigated for biofilm on carbon steel pipe. Heterotrophic bacterial concentrations were not different among non-, monochloramine- (1.0, 1.5 mg/l) and free chlorine- (0.5, 1.0 mg/l) treated samples (P = 0.56, ANOVA). However treatment of 1.5 mg/l free chlorine and 2.0 mg/l monochloraime showed significantly lower densities than control (P < 0.01, ANOVA). By the stepwise increasement of disinfectant concentration, the carbon usage activities of biofilm microflora were decreased after increase without the decrease of bacterial concentration, following reduction of cell density. Carbon usage patterns were qualitatively and quantitatively different with similar bacterial concentrations. Principal component analysis suggested that type and concentration of disinfectant were main factors on the usage of carbons. Our result suggest that the differences of bacterial communities were different among the samples and the need of monochloramine for the reduction of biofilm in drinking water.

Fucoxanthin has been concentrated efficiently using supercritical carbon dioxide. First, fucoxanthin was extracted from Ecklonia cava using solvents. Three solvents, such as medium chain fatty acid (MCFA), medium chain fatty acid ethyl ester, and fatty acid from coconut oil were tested, and MCFA was selected as a suitable solvent to extract fucoxanthin from Ecklonia cava. The concentration was conducted at various pressures and temperatures. In order to concentrate fucoxanthin from extracts, MCFA was eliminated from the extract using supercritical carbon dioxide, and fucoxanthin was concentrated successfully in residue. Optimal conditions for concentrating the fucoxanthin from fucoxanthin extract were $40^{\circ}C$ at 9.7 MPa, $45^{\circ}C$ at 11.0 MPa, and $50^{\circ}C$ at 12.4 MPa, respectively. The density of carbon dioxide affected the concentration of fucoxanthin from fucoxanthin extract. In this optimal conditions, the density for concentrating the fucoxanthin was 600 g/L.

The roadway tunnels in urban areas give rise to problems such as a localized air pollution. Here, we report the results of a case study of an urban roadway tunnel measurement. The size-resolved particle sampling was carried out with a two 2-stage filter pack samplers and an Andersen impactor sampler at the center of Buk-Ak tunnel in November 2001. Particle Induced X-ray Emission (PIXE) was applied to determine the elemental composition of size-resolved particles divided into soluble and insoluble fractions. The Thermal/Optical Reflectance (TOR$^{(R)}$) method was also employed in analyzing of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC). Mass concentrations of fine (< 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and coarse (> 1.2 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) particles are 165 and 48 $\mu\textrm{g}$ m$^{-3}$ , respectively. Total elemental mass concentration (the sum of insoluble coarse, soluble coarse, insoluble fine, and soluble fine) is found to be 24$\mu\textrm{g}$ m$^{-3}$ and comprises only 11 % of total particle mass concentration. The concentrations of EC, OC, and mass show the clear dependency on particle size with the maximum between 0.1 and 0.43 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ aerodynamic diameters. Total carbon (sum of EC and OC) accounts for approximately 70% of mass concentration.n.

The objective of this study was to optimize the slurry contents and salt concentrations for ethanol production from hydrolysates of the seaweed Eucheuma spinosum. A monosaccharide concentration of 44.2 g/l as 49.6% conversion of total carbohydrate of 89.1 g/l was obtained from 120 g dw/l seaweed slurry. Monosaccharides from E. spinosum slurry were obtained by thermal acid hydrolysis and enzymatic hydrolysis. Addition of activated carbon at 2.5% (w/v) and the adsorption time of 2 min were used in subsequent adsorption treatments to prevent the inhibitory effect of HMF. The adsorption surface area of the activated carbon powder was 1,400-1,600 m2/g and showed selectivity to 5-hydroxymethyl furfural (HMF) from monosaccharides. Candida tropicalis KCTC 7212 was cultured in yeast extract, peptone, glucose, and high-salt medium, and exposed to 80, 90, 100, and 110 practical salinity unit (psu) salt concentrations in the lysates. The 100 psu salt concentration showed maximum cell growth and ethanol production. The ethanol fermentations with activated carbon treatment and use of C. tropicalis acclimated to a high salt concentration of 100 psu produced 17.9 g/l of ethanol with a yield (YEtOH) of 0.40 from E. spinosum seaweed.
It have been investigated how algal and bacterial symbiotic reaction influences on removal of organic carbon in river ecosystem. And artificial experimentation apparatus was made for algae'and bacteia'culture as lab scale. Investigating and researching minutely the change of concentration of organic carbon substrate and the change of population density of algae'and of bacteria'with this artificial experimentation apparatus, the next results could be obtained. 1. Successful decrease of DOC(dissolved organic carbon) could not be expected unless algal and bacterial biomass floe was nut formed effectively and unless biosorption was not proceeded effectively in the very culture system in which artificial synthetic wastewater was supplied continuously at constant rate. 2. In conditions of culture liquid of 1335 glucnse mg/L(type 1) and of 267 glucose mg:L(type 2), the algal dominant species was always Chlorella vulgaris in both types in which artificial synthetic wastewater were supplied continuously at constant rate and algae population density was around maximum 107 cells/mL. 3. It was around 108 ~ 107 cells/mL that the population density of heterotrophic bacterium. In culture medium systems type 1 and type 2 in which artificial wastewater were supplied continuously at constant rate, the same density appeared initially when using the population density of Escherichia coli w 3110 as indirect indicator. And this density decreased rapidly till the culturing date 35 days were passed away, while this density increased with gentle slope after same date and then the trend of change at type 2 was more severe than one at type 1. 4. When seeing such a change of population density of Escherichia coli w 3110, the growth of heterotrophic bacterium appeared as survival instinct pattern of broader requirement of nutrient at condition of low concentration of organic carbon substrate than condition of high concentration of same substrate.
This study investigates the effect of sodium bicarbonate ($NaHCO_3$) on growth of S.dimorphus. $NaHCO_3$ concentration was varied from 0 to 2 g-C/L. As a result, the increase in concentration of $NaHCO_3$ up to 1.5 g-C/L increased dry weight of algae. The highest specific growth rate of S. dimorphus was $0.36day^{-1}$ which was obtained at concentration of 0.5 g-C/L $NaHCO_3$. pH showed a large variation range at the concentrations lower than 0.5 g-C/L $NaHCO_3$ whereas inorganic carbon, nitrate and phosphorus removal rates were almost same at the concentrations higher than 0.5 g-C/L $NaHCO_3$ (0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5, 2 g-C/L $NaHCO_3$). Their average inorganic carbon, nitrate and phosphorus removal rate were 70 mg-C/L/d, 11.3 mg-N/L/d, and 1.6 mg-P/L/d, respectively. Thus, $NaHCO_3$ didn't effect on inorganic carbon, nitrate and phosphorus removal rate of S. dimorphus.

This study determined the spatial distribution characteristics of carbon dioxide in Northeast Asia, connecting land coverage and vegetation index that have influence on concentration and distribution of carbon dioxide measured by GOSAT with GIS spatial analysis method. The results visibly showed that the spatial distribution of carbon dioxide had different patterns in dependent on the present status of land use in its surrounding area. Such high concentration of carbon dioxide was formed in developed sites like cities while forest areas showed low concentration of it. We also found that there were relatively high negative(-) correlations between carbon dioxide and vegetation, in statistically significant level. It is expected to be used as a basic data for establishing measures to reduce greenhouse gas in the future.

This study was done to improve the effectiveness of nitrification and denitrification using the aeration-anoxic combination method using CFSTR(continuous-flow stirred-tank reactor) attached with an anoxic reactor filled with a media. In order to calculate the concentration of nitric acid within the aeration tank proportional to the anoxic rate within the reactor, supernatant within the inflow and precipitation tanks were influxed into the anoxic reactor. The rate of nitrogen removal was calculated using the concentration of inflow and flow of returned supernatant. From the results of this experiment, the carbon source needed in the anoxic reactor came from the inflow so that anoxification was achieved completely using the inflow source without the introduction of an external carbon source. However, as the ratio of nitric acid becomes large in inflow and nitric acid flow, the carbon source within the input source decreases so that the concentration of carbon source is important.
