The solubility, the surface concentration and the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide in deep sea were numerically investigated. Base on the calculations the relations between the surface concentration of liquid carbon dioxide droplet with the hydrate film and the solubility and those between the ambient carbon dioxide concentration in the plume and the dissolution rate were obtained. The result show that a carbon dioxide droplet is released both at 1000 m in depth with the initial droplet diameter of 0.011 m or less and at 1500 m in depth with a diameter of 0.015 m or less, and the droplet is completely dissolved below 500 m in depth. The hydrate film acts as a resistant layer for the dissolution of liquid carbon dioxide, and the effect of the hydrate film on the dissolution of liquid carbon dioxide depended upon the depth.
Global wanning induced by greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide is a serious problem for mankind. Carbon dioxide ocean disposal is one of the promising options to reduce carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere because the ocean has vast capacity for carbon dioxide sequestration. However, the dissolution rate of liquid carbon dioxide in seawater must be known in advance in order to estimate the amount of carbon dioxide sequestration in the ocean. Therefore, the solubility, the surface concentration, the droplet size and other factors of liquid carbon dioxide at various depths are calculated. The results show that liquid carbon dioxide changes to carbon dioxide bubble around 500 m in depth, and the droplet is completely dissolved below 500 m in depth if carbon dioxide droplet is released both at 1000 m in depth with the initial droplet diameter of 0.011 m or less and at 1500 m in depth with the diameter of 0.015 m or less. In addition, the hydrate film acts as a resistant layer for the dissolution of liquid carbon dioxide. The surface concentration of carbon dioxide droplet with the hydrate film is about 50% at 1500 m in depth and about 60% at 1000 m in depth of the carbon dioxide solubility. Also, the ambient carbon dioxide concentration in the plume is an another crucial parameter for complete dissolution at the intermediate ocean depth, and the injection of liquid carbon dioxide from a moving ship is more effective than that from a fixed pipeline.
PURPOSES: In this study, alkali-activated blast-furnace slag (AABFS) was investigated to determine its capacity to absorb carbon dioxide and to demonstrate the feasibility of its use as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC). In addition, this study was performed to evaluate the influence of the alkali-activator concentration on the absorption capacity and physicochemical characteristics. METHODS: To determine the characteristics of the AABFS as a function of the activator concentration, blast-furnace slag was activated by using calcium hydroxide at mass ratios ranging from 6 to 24%. The AABFS pastes were used to evaluate the carbon dioxide absorption capacity and rate, while the OPC paste was tested under the same conditions for comparison. The changes in the surface morphology and chemical composition before and after the carbon dioxide absorption were analyzed by using SEM and XRF. RESULTS: At an activator concentration of 24%, the AABFS absorbed approximately 42g of carbon dioxide per mass of paste. Meanwhile, the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed onto the OPC was minimal at the same activator concentration, indicating that the AABFS actively absorbed carbon dioxide as a result of the carbonation reaction on its surface. However, the carbon dioxide absorption capacity and rate decreased as the activator concentration increased, because a high concentration of the activator promoted a hydration reaction and formed a dense internal structure, which was confirmed by SEM analysis. The results of the XRF analyses showed that the CaO ratio increased after the carbon dioxide absorption. CONCLUSIONS : The experimental results confirmed that the AABFS was capable of absorbing large amounts of carbon dioxide, suggesting that it can be used as a dry absorbent for carbon capture and sequestration and as a feasible alternative to OPC. In the formation of AABFS, the activator concentration affected the hydration reaction and changed the surface and internal structure, resulting in changes to the carbon dioxide absorption capacity and rate. Accordingly, the activator ratio should be carefully selected to enhance not only the carbon capture capacity but also the physicochemical characteristics of the geopolymer.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate relationships between Ryodoraku and carbon monoxide concentration during expiration of smokers. This study was designed as an exploratory observational study. This study was based on the hypothesis that increased levels of carbon monoxide in the smoker's breath may affect indicators that reflect the respiratory and circulatory systems in the Ryodoraku test. Methods: The participants were 49 people who smoked for over a year. They were examined at least one hour after their last smoking. They were tested in a stable state. When examining carbon monoxide during expiration, they breathed deeply, kept breathing for 20 seconds, and slowly exhaled. The Ryodoraku test was performed on its representative points of twelve meridians. Pearson's correlation analysis was used to investigate correlation between the concentration of carbon monoxide in the breath and the current in the measurement points. Results: The higher the carbon monoxide concentration in the exhalation, the significantly greater the current value of Lt H1·both H2·Lt H3·Rt H5, deviation of Lt H1·Lt H2·Lt H3 current value and the laterality between right and left current of H3. Conclusion: The more cigarette smoked, the more changes in heart, lung, pericardium and triple energizer meridians were observed in the Ryodoraku test. I found that increased carbon monoxide in smokers could affect the results of the Ryodoraku test.
In this study, adsorption characteristics of PCBs on granular activated carbon were experimentally investigated in a batch reactor and in a fixed bed reactor. Granular activated carbon removed above 98.4% of initial concentration, 1000mg/L, of PCBs. It was estabilished that the adsorption equilibrium of PCBs on granular activated carbon was more successfully fitted by Freundlich isotherm equation in the concentration range from 1 to 1000mg/L. Because Freundlich parameter, ${\beta}$ is 0.346, removall treatment of PCBs by activated carbon accounts for the fact that toxicity reduction can be achieved through this process. Appearance time of breakthrough curve is faster with the increase flow rate and inflow concentration of liquid. The utility of granular activated carbon is enhanced with the increase of bed height and with the decrease of inflow rate.
A way to adsorptively remove indoor carbon dioxide at relatively lower concentration under ambient temperature was studied. A small lab-scale carbon dioxide adsorption and desorption reactors were prepared, and 5A and 13X zeolites were packed in this reactors to investigate their adsorption and desorption characteristics. The inflow carbon dioxide concentration was controlled to 5,000 ppm, relatively higher concentration found in indoor spaces with air quality problems, by diluting carbon dioxide with nitrogen gas. The flow rate was varied as 1~5 L/min, and the carbon dioxide concentration after this reactor was constantly monitored to examine the adsorption characteristics. It was found that 5A adsorbed more carbon dioxide than 13X. A lab-scale carbon dioxide desorption reactor was also prepared to investigate the desorption characteristics of zeolites, which is essential for the regeneration of used zeolites. The desorption temperature was varied as $25{\sim}200^{\circ}C$, and the desorption pressure was varied as 0.1~1.0 bar. Carbon dioxide desorbed better at higher temperature, and lower pressure. 5A could be regenerated more than three times by thermal desorption at $180^{\circ}C$. It is required to modify zeolites for higher adsorption and better regeneration performances.
This paper presents a study on the permittivities of the carbon black/epoxy composite at microwave frequency. The measurements were performed at the frequency band of $1 GHz\~18GHz$. The results show that the complex permittivities of composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the carbon black dispersion. The frequency spectrums of dielectric constants and ac conductivities of composites show the good conformities with descriptions of the percolation theory. The carbon black concentration dependencies do not have conformities with the descriptions of percolation theory and there is no peculiar concentration like percolation threshold, on that concentration, the conductivity of composite jumps up. A new scheme, that is a branch of Lichtenecker-Rother formula, is proposed to obtain a mixing law to describe the complex permittivities of the composites as function frequency and concentration of carbon black.
In order to investigate and generalize the effects of carbon and nitrogen sources on the growth of and lipid production in Chlorella sp. 227, several nutritional combinations consisting of different carbon and nitrogen sources and concentrations were given to the media for cultivation of Chlorella sp. 227, respectively. The growth rate and lipid content were affected largely by concentration rather than by sources. The maximum specific growth was negatively affected by low concentrations of carbon and nitrogen. There is a maximum allowable inorganic carbon concentration (less than 500~1,000 mM bicarbonate) in autotrophic culture, but the maximum lipid content per gram dry cell weight (g DCW) was little affected by the concentration of inorganic carbon within the concentration. The lipid content per g DCW was increased when the microalga was cultured with the addition of glucose and bicarbonate (mixotrophic) at a fixed nitrogen concentration and with the lowest nitrogen concentration (0.2 mM), relatively. Considering that lipid contents per g DCW increased in those conditions, it suggests that a high ratio of carbon to nitrogen in culture media promotes lipid accumulation in the cells. Interestingly, a significant increase of the oleic acid amount to total fatty acids was observed in those conditions. These results showed the possibility to induce lipid production of high quality and content per g DCW by modifying the cultivation conditions.

We conducted a study to investigate the characteristics of the carbon cycle of two streams (located in Shig a Prefecture, Japan), having similar size, namely, the Adokawa stream (length: 52 km, area: 305 km2, watershed population: 8,000) and the Yasukawa stream (length: 62 km, area: 380 km2, watershed population: 120,000), but with different degree of human activity. Samples were collected from these two streams at 14 (Adokawa stream) and 23 (Yasukawa stream) stations in the flowing direction. The dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration and the stable carbon isotope ratio of DIC (δ13C-DIC) were measured in addition to the watershed features and the chemical variables of the stream water. The δ13C-DIC (-9.50 ± 2.54‰), DIC concentration (249 ± 76 µM), and electric conductivity (52 ± 13 µS/cm) in Adokawa stream showed small variations from upstream to downstream. However, the δ13C-DIC (-8.68 ± 2.3‰) upstream of Yasukawa stream was similar to that of Adokawa stream and decreased downstream (-12.13 ± 0.43‰). DIC concentration (upstream: 272 ± 89 µM, downstream: 690 ± 37 µM) and electric conductivity (upstream: 69 ± 17 µS/cm, downstream: 193 ± 37 µS/cm) were higher downstream than upstream of Yasukawa stream. The DIC concentration of Yasukawa stream was significantly correlated with watershed environmental variables, such as, watershed population density (r = 0.8581, p<0.0001, n = 23), and forest area percentage of the watershed (r = -0.9188, p<0.0001, n = 23). δ13C-DIC showed significant negative correlation with the DIC concentration (r = -0.7734, p<0.0001, n = 23), electric conductivity (r = -0.5396, p = 0.0079, n = 23), and watershed population density (r = -0.6836, p = 0.0003, n = 23). Our approach using a stable carbon isotope ratio suggests that DIC concentration and δ13C-DIC could be used as indicators for monitoring the health of stream ecosystems with different watershed characteristics.
