  • Formation mechanism of residual carbon layer, frequently observed in the $CuInSe_2$ (CIS) thin film prepared by direct solution coating routes, was investigated in order to find a way to eliminate it. As a model system, a methanol solution with dissolved Cu and In salts, whose viscosity was adjusted by adding ethylcellulose (EC), was chosen. It was found that a double layer, a top metal ion-derived film and bottom EC-derived layer, formed during an air drying step presumably due to different solubility between metal salts and EC in methanol. Consequently, the top metal ion-derived film acts as a barrier layer inhibiting further thermal decomposition of underlying EC, resulting a formation of bottom carbon residue layer.

  • The purpose of this study is to prepare a high strength fiberglass reinforced metal. Aluminum covering was carried out over carbon materials such as carbon fiber in order to increase their wettability to molten metals such as aluminum. A sputtering apparatus with a cylindrical target was fabricated to carry out the covering. Sputtering was caused by glow discharge between the target and the two anode plates attached to its top and bottom. As the substrate for preliminary test, a thin carbon wire was used instead of carbon fiber, and the wire was placed at the central axis of the target. Aluminium coating was formed on the whole surface of the substrate. The formation rate and structure of coating were varied by controlling the electrical potential of substrate. When the substrate was electrically isolated, coating with columnar structure was formed with a formation rate of $15{\mu}m/hr$. In case of grounded substrate, coating with amorphous structure was formed with a formation rate of $7{\mu}m/hr$.

  • Charged carbon clusters which are formed by the gas activation are suggested to be responsible for the formation of the metastable diamond film. The number of carbon atoms in the cluster that can reverse the stability between diamond and graphite by the capillary effect increases sensitively with increasing the surface energy ratio of graphite to diamond. The gas activation process produces charges such as electrons and ions, which are energetically the strong heterogeneous nucleation sites for the supersaturated carbon vapor, leading to the formation of the charged clusters. Once the carbon clusters are charged, the surface energy of diamond can be reduced by the electrical double layer while that of graphite cannot because diamond is dielectric and graphite is conducting. The unusual phenomena observed in the chemical vapor deposition diamond process can be successfully approached by the charged cluster model. These phenomena include the diamond deposition with the simultaneous graphite etching, which is known as the thermodynamic paradox and the preferential formation of diamond on the convex edge, which is against the well-established concept of the heterogeneous nucleation.

  • The advanced oxidation process (AOP) using ozone combined with hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet treatment were evaluated for biodegradable dissolved organic carbon (EDOC) formation and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) removal. Oxidation treatment were conducted alone or combination with ozone, hydrogen peroxide and ultraviolet processes. Ozone dosage of ozone process was varied from $0.5mg/l{\ell}\cdot}min$ to $5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$. Ozone/hydrogen peroxide process was done using $20mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ of hydrogen peroxide concentration. Ozone/ultraviolet process was irradiated with $12mW/cm^2$ of density and 254nm. Ozone dosage was varied from $0.5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ to $5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ at the ozone/hydrogen peroxide and ozone/ultraviolet processes too. Contact time of all the process was 20 minutes. Oxidation treatment were performed on microfiltration effluent samples. BDOC formation was reached to an optimum at ozone dosage of $1.5mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ in the ozone/hydrogen peroxide process and $1mg/{\ell}{\cdot}min$ in ozone/ultraviolet process, after which BDOC formation was decreased at higher ozone dosages. But BDOC formation was increased with ozone dosages increasing in ozone process. The efficiency of DOC removal was higher AOPs than ozone process. Ozone/ultraviolet proces was the highest for DOC removal efficiency in each process. THMFP. removal efficiency by ozone/ultraviolet process was higher than that by each of ozone process and ozone/hydrogen peroxide process.

  • The formation of astaxanthin by Xanthophyllomyces dendrorhous mutant JH1 depends on the culture conditions. Therefore, the effects of inoculation rate (1-5%, v/v) and medium compositions (various carbon and nitrogen sources) on cell growth and astaxanthin formation in X. dendrorhous mutant JH1 were investigated. Inoculation at 3% (v/v) was optimal for cell growth and astaxanthin formation. The most effective carbon source for cell growth and astaxanthin formation was glucose, and the best nitrogen source was yeast extract. The 3% (w/v) glucose and 0.2% (w/v) yeast extract showed the best effect on cell growth and astaxanthin formation, compared with others tested. The 3% glucose, 0.2% yeast extract, $0.15%\;KH_{2}PO_{4}$, $0.05%\;MgSO_4$, $0.01%\;MnSO_4$, and $0.01%\;CaCl_2$ were selected for cell growth and astaxanthin formation. Under the conditions selected, the maximum concentrations of cell and astaxanthin obtained after 168 h of cultivation were 5.43 g/l and 28.20 mg/l, respectively.

  • Molecular dynamics simulations on the deformation behavior of single-walled carbon nanotube are performed. Formation energies of CNT's by interatomic potentials are computed and compared with ab initio results. Bending and axial compression are applied under lattice statics and NVT ensemble conditions. Specifically, we focus on the mechanism of kink formation in bending. The simulation results are comprehensively explained in the framework of atomistic energetics. The effects of temperature and chirality on the deformation of carbon nanotube are also studied.

  • MNDO and ab initio calculations for gas phase reactions of alkoxide-exchange at silicon and carbon centers have been performed. Results show that MNDO values of ${\Delta}$E's of these reactions closely parallel those of the STO-3G method. The alkoxide-exchange at silicon is shown to be facile due to the formation of stable five-coordinate intermediate while the reaction at carbon is predicted to proceed with high barrier; the difference in this substitution behavior between carbon and silicon is shown to be due to an easy valence shell expansion of silicon in accommodating an extra bond in the formation of stable five-coordinate intermediates.

  • The Steptoean Positive Carbon Isotope Excursion (SPICE) is found in the Machari Formation which was interpreted to have been deposited on the middle to outer carbonate ramp environment. The Machari Formation is the Middle to Late Cambrian in age and distributed in the Yeongweol area, Gangweon Province, Korea. The SPICE event in the Machari Formation begins with the first appearance datum of trilobite Glyptagnostus reticulatus and ends with the first appearance of datum of trilobite Irvingella. The SPICE is found in approximately 120 m thick sequence and ${\delta}^{13}C$ values in the SPICE interval range from 0.6 to 4.4‰. The SPICE in the Machari Formation is interpreted to be caused by burial of organic matter in the sea floor and subsequent increase of $^{13}C$ isotope of the Late Cambrian ocean. The SPICE interval in the Machari Formation corresponds to the highstand to transgressive systems tracts.

  • The processes of formation and dissociation of gas hydrates were investigated by monitoring pressure and temperature variations in a pressure cell in order to understand the kinetic behavior of gas hydrate and the controlling factors fur the phase transition of gas hydrate below freezing. Gas hydrates were made kom guest gases ($CH_4,\;CO_2$, and their mixed-gas) and fine ice powder. We found that formation and dissociation speeds of gas hydrates were not controlled by temperature and pressure conditions alone. The results of this study suggested that pressure levels at the formation of mixed-gas hydrate determine the transient equilibrium pressure itself.
