  • The washed fresh ginsengs packed with air, vaccum and nitrogen gas were irradiated at the levels of 1,2 and 3kGy gamma radiation and then stored at $4{\sim}5^{\circ}C$ for 90days to investigate the effects of gamma radiation on microbial inactivation, eelworm disinfestation and physicochemical changes. After a 90 day storage, $2{\sim}3kGy$ irradiated groups showed 20% of weight loss and 10% of rot while non-irradiated group 100% and 20% or more, respectively. Also the irradiated groups showed somewhat lower values of specific gravity, color density and hardness immediately after irradiation, thereafter higher value of them with storage time than those of non-irradiated group. The irradiation increased the yields of ginseng extract and crude saponins but no effects on the proximate composition and TLC and HPLC patterns of saponin. The food-borne microorganisms decreased in viable cell counts by $2{\sim}3$ log cycles with $2{\sim}3kGy$ radiation and the eelworms were completely disinfested with 1 kGy radiation.

  • Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for classification and labelling will provide an internationally agreed hazard classification system of chemical products and for communication of those hazards. This study aimed for establishment of the oral acute toxic class (ATC) method and application of GHS on pesticides. The ATC method was developed for determining $LD_{50}$ estimates of chemical substances with significantly fewer animals than needed when applying conventional $LD_{50}$ tests. We carried out $LD_{50}$ test and ATC test on 13 pesticides, Although methidathion EC and parathion-ethyl EC showed significantly different in $LD_{50}$ values between $LD_{50}$ test and ATC method, there are no difference in toxicity class by GHS. Both tests on the other pesticides showed almost equal results and toxicity class by GHS. Therefore, this study indicated high possibility of application of ATC method and GHS on pesticides.

  • Mobility of pesticides can be occurred by run-off and leachate or soil erosion. It is one of the most important factors for environmental contamination, particularly in steep sloped-land as Gangwon alpine region. In this study, the mobility of seven pesticides in different slopes and soil textures was investigated by simulated rainfall under controlled conditions. Simulated rainfall subjected to 60 mm $hr^{-1}$ was treated using rainfall simulator after 12 hr of pesticide treatment. Amounts of the pesticides were measured in run-off and leachate samples. The soil samples collected after rainfall from upper and lower parts and three different depths of sloped-plot were also analyzed. At result, all pesticides from the un-off samples collected from Taebaek(silty clay loam) and Heongseong(sandy loam) soils were detected maximum 96% within 60 minutes after first collection except carbendazim and cypermethrin which have the lowest water solubilities. From the leachate samples, a similar pattern was shown as run-off samples but amount of pesticides was lower than those of run-off samples. In soil samples, the order of the amount of pesticide residues was $0{\sim}5$ > $5{\sim}10$ > $10{\sim}15$ cm of soil depth and no pattern was shown in upper and lower, and different slopes. Comparing to mobility of pesticides in water and soil samples, pesticides in soil samples were higher than those of water samples in Taebaek soil. However, the results using Heongseong soils were in contrast to those of Taebaek soil. These results revealed that mobility of pesticides can be dependant mainly on soil textures and physicochemical properties of pesticides. Therefore, it can be suggested that selection of pesticides should be considered for soil texture and properties of pesticide in the alpine and sloped-land.
