  • The safety and comfort of car seats wee studied by utilization of engineering analysis/ experiment and human engineering data. As important factors of the static seating comfort, static spring constant, body pressure distribution, driving posture were discussed. In connection with the dynamic seating comfort, vibrational characteristics of domestic car seats(natural frequencies, damping, frequency spectrum, transmission ratio)were measured and discussed. Finally, the safety of the seat was analyzed and evaluated through calculation and experiments.

  • In order to investigate performance changes, the acceleration, vibration, and braking performance tests were carried out on the electric multiple units (EMUs) with over 20 years operation. According to the testing results, in vibration and braking performance, the similar performance results were obtained as compared with newly manufactured EMUs. However, in terms of acceleration performance, below reference value (3.0 km/h/s) has been obtained. This is mainly due to performance deterioration including traction motor. The precision diagnosis evaluation of deteriorated EMUs will be provided through the overall evaluation of corrosion testing and structural performance of car body.

  • The state of deformation and stress and the structural safety are studied at the main frame composed with car body by the impact of front, offset and overturn in this study. The values of maximum deformation and von-Mises stress in case of offset impact are 2 to 3 times as high as those in case of front or offset impact at the parts of front and middle legs of roll cage. The case of front impact is of the greatest safety as compared with the case of offset or overturn impact. As there is a great stress on the side in case of overturn impact, this value is more than 2 times as low as that in case of offset impact. But there is a great possibility of overturn by the buckling on both sides in case of overturn impact.

  • Machine vision system plays an important role in factory automation. Its many applications are found in automobile manufacturing industries, as an eye for robotic automation system. In this paper, an automobile position measuring vision system(APMVS) applicable to manufacturing line for under body painting of a car is introduced. The APMVS measures position and orientation of the car body to be sealed or painted by the robots. The configuration of the overall robotic sealing/painting system, design and application procedure, and application examples are described.

  • The shimmy phenomenon, or the radial vibration of steering wheel, happens frequently at a high speed, complicated with suspension system, steering system, vehicle body, engine, transmission and tire. In this study, the suspension system and steering system are modeled by the reference of vehicle body design coordinates(T.L.H), the coordinate system usually used by passenger car maker. In addition, the theoretical results from numerical method have been investigated and compared with the experimental ones by the correlating analysis between the tire and sub-system. The steering and suspension system modeled for the numerical analysis are both independent type. This study developed an analysis program which could forecast the shimmy level in advance by the variation of properties in each system and the change in design of new model.

  • Dynamic model of the Korea standardized rubber-tired AGT light rail vehicle, and boundary conditions between vehicle and infrastructures (running track, guidance rail) were defined to analyze vehicular vibration behaviors occurred at the worst condition. Using the commercialized software RecurDyn, vibration accelerations of car body and bogies were analyzed. Based on the Korea performance test criteria for urban transit, vertical and lateral vibration of car body were calculated and evaluated. As the results, the Korea standardized rubber-tired AGT light rail vehicle satisfied the performance criteria and design requirement.

Using the commercialized software RecurDyn, resultant forces and vibration accelerations of car body and bogies were analyzed. Based on the Korea performance test criteria for urban transit, vertical and lateral vibration of car body were calculated and evaluated as wearing condition of guide wheels. And resultant forces between bogie guidance frame and guide rail in straight running track were analyzed. • In the authors' preceeding paper, an improved component mode synthesis (CMS) technique in which experimental data as well as finite-element data are available in sub-systems has been proposed. Thi s technique, called an improved experimental free-interface method (IEFIM), has been proved to be more accurate and more efficient than the conventional experimental CMS method based on McNeal's formulation. It is due to the facts that dynamic residual terms as well as static ones are compensated from experimentally obtained FRFs and that FRFs measured on any frequencies can be used for the compensation. In this paper, the technique is applied to the component mode synthesis of a car body structure. As a result, the applicability of the technique to a large structure is demonstrated.

  • Small Overlap test decided on IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) evaluates a robustness of the car body and a passenger injury protection. A current vehicle is satisfied with a robustness of the car body for Small Overlap test but not meet the requirements of passenger injuries because it is difficult to inquire into the actual state of injury mechanism for Small Overlap test. The study shows the new injury mechanism which represents the relation between a structure of the vehicle placed with the lift foot and the low extremity injury.
