  • Captafol (1H-isoindole-1.3 (2H)-dione, 3a,4,7,7a-tetrahydro-2-1.1.2.2-tetrachloroethylthio), is widely used as broad spectrum fungicide in agriculture and industrial application. N-sulfenylphthalimide fungicides are relatively low toxic to human and animal by oral administration. However it was reported that the fungicides have carcinogenic and mutagenic potentials, in subacute and chronic toxicity experiments. As mentioned the above, there are many experimental reports on the toxicity of captan and folpet, the toxicological researches on captafol are few, therefore in this experiment we examined the subacute toxicity of captafol which is widely used as fungicide in biochemical parameters in serum. The experimental results were summerized as follows: 1) In captafol administered group, the body weight was significantly decreased but the biochemical parameters such as AST, ALT, LDH, BUN, TG in serum were remarkably elevated in comparison to that of control group. 2) Captafol plus ethanol administered group, serum AST, ALT, BUN were elevated in comparison to that of captafol treated group.

  • Mycelial growth resistant isolates of Botryosphaeria dothidea to benomyl showed 99~79% spore germination on the PSA media supplemented with 200~2,100 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl to manifest the high cross-resistance in spore germination. Mycelial growth, 23~9 mm in colony diameter, also manifested the high cross-resistance of mycelial growth together with similarity of spore forming cross-resistance. Benomyl resistant isolates BR1, BR2 and BR3, grew 23~10 mm in colony diameter at 330~3,000 $\mu\textrm{g}$/ml of captafol, captan and oxine-copper showing the high double resistance of mycelial growth and spore formation with minor difference. However, within concentration range of the 3 fungicides tested, germinations of all the tested isolates were completely suppressed to show no double-resistance in the fungal spore germination.

  • Regardless of the kind of the apple orchards whether received various fungicides application or not Rovral exhibited the most efficient inhibitory effect on the sporulation of Alternaria mali with the spotted leaf disks at the recommended dose $0.5{\mu}g/ml$ as well as the lower or the higher doses. When applied at the recommended doses $0.7{\mu}g,\;0.75{\mu}g,\;and\;0.7{\mu}g/ml$ of Antracol, Dithane M-45, and Dikar, respectively, these fungicides showed complete inhibitory effects on the sporulation. At the lower levels of application, they allowed the sporulation of 10,000 to 25,000 conidia/ml. Polyoxin and Difolatan, when applied on the leaf disks from the orchard that had received the fungicides application, exhibited low effects allowing the sporulation of around 20,000 conidia/ml. On the leaf disks from the orchard that had received no fungicide application, however, both fungicides showed relatively high inhibitory effects of the sporulation. The inhibitory effects of Captan, Dakonil, and Spat on the sporulation were lower than those of the aforementioned fungicides. Bayleton was the least effective among the fungicides used in the present investigation. Benlate showed promoting effect on the sporulation of the apple leaf spot fungus rather tan inhibiting.

  • The effect of various fungicides on anthracnose of strawberry, caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, was determined in vitro, and in greenhouse and field trials. The $EC_{50}$ values of benomyl were clearly different between two sensitive and resistant groups of isolates. Iminoctadine tris had lower $EC_{50}$ values than mancozeb and propineb as protective fungicides and the response of mancozeb, propineb and azoxystrobin was variable depending on the isolate. In the greenhouse, pre- and post- inoculation fungicide applications significantly reduced disease compared to the non-treated control. Propineb, mancozeb and azoxystrobin were effective in controlling the disease when applied prior to inoculation. Metconazole and prochloraz-Mn treatments as ergosterol biosynthesis-inhibiting fungicides had the lowest incidence of anthracnose. In the nursery field trials in 2009 and 2010, the reduced fungicide spray program provided similar levels of disease control compared to the calendar-based applications with captan. A reduced spray program based on efficacious fungicides such as prochloraz-Mn will be useful for strawberry growers and provide more options for controlling anthracnose in Korea.

  • During the year 2018, the symptoms of bunch rot on Shine Muscat (Vitis vinifera L.) were observed in Kimcheon-si, Gyeongbuk province in Korea. The disease appears on the Shine Muscat as a black rot due to prolific fungal sporulation after it has invaded into the Shine Muscat which look completely empty and dryness. Colonies of these fungi are present on the Shine Muscat skin from fruit setting and increase in amount from early season to harvest, while become peak at ripening stage. To isolate the causal agent, small fragments (2 to 3 mm) of decayed tissue from the lesion margin were placed onto potato dextrose agar (PDA) plates. Fungal colonies on PDA produced dense white aerial mycelium and then covered with dark black conidial heads. These heads were large and radiate, and vesicles were globose (2.12-32.0×2.0-3.1 ㎛). Based on morphological and cultural characteristics, this fungus was identified as Aspergillus tubingensis. To confirm its identity, the internal transcribed spacer, β-tubulin, and RNA polymerase II was sequenced for molecular identification. BLAST search indicated 99% identity with A. tubingensis. The pathogenicity test on healthy grape of Shine Muscat produced bunch rot, as the original symptoms. To select effective fungicides for the control of brunch rot, an in vitro antifungal activity of seven fungicides were evaluated against the growth of A. tubingensis. Five fungicides (dipenoconazole, tebuconazole, metconazole, iminoctadine, and captan) exhibited significantly strong suppression of the mycelial growth of A. tubingensis.

  • Responses to the 14 fungicides added in PSA of penicillium expansum isolated froms the four major apple growing areas in Korea were examined. Degrees of the fungal tolerance were various with little difference by area and with great difference by kind and concentration of fungicide. Fall isolates of the fungus grew at higher fungicide concentration than did the spring isolates. $ED_{50}$ and MIC to mycelial growth of genomyl, garbenda, polydong, polyoxin and thiophanate methyl were $0.1{\mu}g-41.7{\mu}g/ml\;and\;100{\mu}g-2,250{\mu}g/ml,$, respectively, indicating high fungicide effects on the fungus isolated from decayed apples in storages and infected apples in orchards with low fungal tolerance; of captafol, captan, iprodione and mancozeb were $2.6{\mu}g - 750{\mu}g/ml\;and\;638{\mu}g-40,500{\mu}g/ml$, respectively, indicating medium degree of both fungicidal effects and fungal tolerance; and of chlorothalonil, folpet, oxidong, propineb and triademefon were $27.8{\mu}g-8,354{\mu}g/ml\;and\;2,625{\mu}g-150,357{\mu}g/ml$, respectively, indicating low fungicide effects and high fungal tolerance. Fungicidal inhibitory effects on conidia formation exhibited a similar trend as on mycelial growth whereas those on conidia germination showed an opposite trend to the mycelial growth with the exception of polyoxin and triademefon.

  • For the effective control of pepper anthracnose, in vitro antifungal activities of 13 commercial fungicides were tested on spore germination, mycelial growth, and sporulation of Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, anthracnose fungus. Among them, captan, chlorothalonil, dithianon, fluazinam and folpet completely inhibited the spore germination of C. gloeosporioides at the concentration of 0.8 ${\mu}g/ml$. They were followed by mancozeb and propineb, showing more than 80% inhibition of spore germination at 20 ${\mu}g/ml$. The mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides was strongly inhibited by fluazinam and nuarimol. Except for nuarimol, most of the fungicides represented more antifungal activity on the spore germination than the mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides. Azoxystrobin and metominostrobin, Strobilurin fungicides, were only moderately active against the spore germination and the mycelial growth of C. gloeosporioides, but they were effective antisporulant against C. gloeosporioides. From these results, control of pepper anthracnose will have achieved by preventive spray of the commercial fungicides.
