  • The equation which is related to TXV performance was investigated. On the basis of this equation, the TXV simulation program was developed. Results of the developed TXV simulation program were proven by the experiment on the influence of pressure difference between TXV entrance and exit and equalizing pressure. Simulation results show very good agreement with experimental results, the RMS error between them was 1.83%. The capillary tube simulation program was made by the basic equation of fluid dynamics. • An expansion device plays an important role in optimizing the heat pumps by controlling refrigerant flow and balancing the system pressures. Conventional expansion devices are being gradually replaced with electronic expansion valves due to increasing focus on comfort, energy conservation, and application of a variable speed compressor. In addition, the amount of refrigerant charge in a heat pump is another primary parameter influencing system performance. In this study, the flow characteristics of the expansion devices are analyzed, and the effects of refrigerant charge amount on the performance of the heat pump and the variation of compressor speed are investigated at various operating conditions. Mass flow rate through capillary tube, short tube orifice, and EEV was strongly dependent on the upstream pressure and subcooling. The heat pump system is very sensitive with a variation of refrigerant charge amount. The performance of it can be optimized by adjusting the flow rate through expansion device to maintain a constant superheat at all test conditions.

  • Capillary tubes are widely used as expansion device in small refrigeration systems. The refrigerant flowing in the capillary tube experiences frictional and accelerational head losses and flashing simultaneously. In this paper flow characteristics of adiabatic capillary tubes were simulated with various friction factor models, two-phase viscosity models, and two-phase frictional multiplier models. The predicted pressure distribution and mass flow rate are compared with experimental data reported in literature. It is confirmed that the predicting accuracy with homogeneous model can be improved by employing suitable correlations of friction factor, two-phase viscosity and two-phase frictional multiplier.

  • This study shows the experimental characteristics of the double pipe inserted liquid pipe with small diameter in the gas pipe with large diameter for circulating of a liquid of high temperature, pressure and a gas of low temperature, pressure at the same time. So the functions of pipe and pipe's expansion and heat transfer are presented simultaneously. In the result, the temperature of gas refrigerant at the inlet of compressor increased about $5^{\circ}C$ by the heat transfer with liquid refrigerant in case of the double pipe. And liquid gas refrigerant which the temperature at the inlet of evaporator decreased about $3^{\circ}C$ comparing with the existing type flows into an evaporator COP of the double pipe increased about $7{\sim}10%$ comparing with that of the conventional pipe. And the noise of the double pipe at capillary tube is less than that of the conventional type about 3dB. Consequently. it is convinced the superiority of the double pipe in the heat loss and soundproofing aspect.

  • Performance characteristics of a refrigeration systems with various expansion valves and superheat changes were investigated experimentally. Experimental data have been taken utilizing three different devices; a thermostatic expansion valve, a linear type electronic expansion valve and a solenoid type electronic expansion valve. The data taken from tile three types of expansion valves were discussed with the temperature distribution of each zone in the evaporator and the superheat changes of the evaporator outlet In each zone temperature distribution fluctuated larger with the thermostatic expansion valve than with the electronic expansion valves. The optimum superheat ranged from $5^{\circ}C\;to\;15^{\circ}C$, and the superheat with the thermostatic expansion valve showed hunting phenomenon, which affected the evaporating and condensing temperature.

  • In this study, refrigerant noise at connection of capillary tube and evaporator is investigated. Mechanism of refrigerant noise generation is examined in side-by-side type home refrigerator with two evaporators. It is found that the refrigerant noise is generated during refrigeration room fan-off (R-fan of) for that type refrigerator. The reason is that mass flow rate gets down during R-fan of and flow pattern is changed at outlet of capillary tube. We suggest designs for reduction of refrigerant noise with horizontal double expansion device, muffler, and accumulator. To evaluate those improved designs, sound quality index is used.

  • Because both R-134a and R-600a are used as a refrigerant of a household refrigerator in the global market, the home-appliance industry needs an optimized cycle for both refrigerants. The objective of this study is to provide the design guideline on the optimization of a refrigeration system using both refrigerants. For both refrigerants, the performance characteristics of the refrigeration system were tested by varying refrigerant charge amount, capillary tube length, suction diameter and SLHX length. The tested refrigeration system was optimized at the refrigerant charge of 60 g and the capillary tube length of 3600 mm with R-134a, and the refrigerant charge of 34 g and the capillary tube length of 3900 mm with R-600a. The COP increased from 1.63 to 1.68 for R-134a and increased from 1.37 to 1.48 for R-600a, respectively, by applying the suction diameter expansion. In addition, the COP of the R-134a and R-600a system decreased by 2.3~2.4% as the SLHX length decreased by 300 mm.

  • R1234yf has been developed as an alternative refrigerant to R134a, which has been associated with global warming. The capillary tubes as expansion valves control the mass flow rate and balance system pressure in the refrigeration cycle. The present numerical model used the governing equations including the law of conservation of mass, momentum, and energy in a capillary tube. The mass flow rate of R1234yf decreased by 47.0% as the capillary tube length was increased from 1 to 4 m. As the inner diameter of the capillary tubes was changed from 1.3 to 1.7 mm, the mass flow rate of R134a and R1234yf increased by 117.9% and 121.0%, respectively. The mass flow rate of the R134a and R1234yf increased by 28.3% and 29.1% with subcooling increasing from 0 to $7^{\circ}C$. In addition, when the inlet temperature of the capillary tubes was changed from 35 to $60^{\circ}C$, the mass flow rate of R134a and R1234yf increased by 31.0% and 45.4%, respectively.

  • To establish optimum cycle of the inverter-driven heat pump with a variation of frequency, the bypass orifice, which was a short tube haying a bypass hole in the middle, was designed and tested. Flow characteristics of the bypass orifice were measured as a function of orifice geometry and operating conditions. Flow trends with respect to frequency were compared with those of short tube orifices and capillary tubes. Generally, the bypass orifice showed the best flow trends among them. and it would enhance the seasonal energy efficiency ratio of an inverter heat pump system, Based on experimental data, a semi-empirical flow model was developed to predict mass flow rate through bypass orifices. The maximum difference between measured data and model`s prediction was within $\pm$5%.
