  • This study investigated the effect of endurance exercises on blood pressure, angiogenesis, and the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression in the skeletal muscle of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR). Five week old SHRs and Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY) were randomly divided into 3 groups: Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY, n=9), SHR control (SHR-C, n=9), and SHR endurance exercise training (SHR-E, n=9). Endurance exercise training was performed on a treadmill (12-20 m/min, 0% grade, 60 min/day, 5 days/week, 16 weeks). Systolic blood pressure was monitored with the tail-cuff method. The expression of VEGF protein and capillary density were identified using western blotting and H&E staining in the soleus muscle, respectively. Systolic blood pressure was reduced by endurance exercise in SHR ($p$ <0.05). The capillary density of skeletal muscles in SHR-C was lower than in WKY ($p$ <0.05), but it was recovered by endurance exercise training (SHR-E) compared to SHR-C ($p$ <0.05), and VEGF protein was also increased by endurance exercise training compared to SHR-C ($p$ <0.05). These data suggest that the enhancement of capillary density via an increase of VEGF expression in skeletal muscles by endurance exercise training could be an important factor to inhibit blood pressure elevation in SHR.

  • In this study the suction pressure was measured with respect to operational time by submersing the multi-bore capillary membrane module in membrane bioreactor(MBR). The hexagonal shape capillary module which has the nominal pore size of 0.2 ㎛, outer diameter of 6.4 or 4.2 mm was immersed in MLSS 8,000 mg/L active sludge aqueous solution, and confirmed changes with respect to permeation flux and air flow rate. It was operated by the filtration/relaxation(FR), FR with backwashing(FR/BW), and sinusoidal flux continuous operation(SFCO) modes. The suction pressure for the SFCO and FR modes was lower at 30 and 50 L/m2·hr, respectively. In addition, the suction pressure of the module with a small outer diameter was relatively low. The suction pressure of a large outer diameter was greatly increased, but it could be reduced by more than 40% by backwashing.

  • We treated a 45 year-old male patient. He had Hypertension, Diabetes, Hyperlipidemia and Obesity. The main symptoms were Low-back pain, General body weakness, Abdominal discomfort. We diagnosed him as metabolic syndrome and prescribe Yagwanchunghyul-tang three times a day. We observed clinical symptoms Blood pressure, Capillary blood glucose, BMI, Body weight. Cholesterol, Triglyceride. After the treatment, The main symptom, blood pressure, capillary blood glucose(PP2hr), Hypercholesterol, Hypertriglyceride were improved. and BMI levels fell. This case shows that Yagwanchunghyul-tang has an effect on Metabolic syndrome like a Hypertension, Diabetes, Hyperlipidermia, Hypertriglyceride.

  • A model for degradation of $eta$-$Al_2O_3$ is derived from sress generated by Poiseuille pressure capillary effect and effulent flux in charging process of Na-S Battery. Critical current density for degradation increase with increasing the crack length and crack tip radius. radius 10-7cm and crack length 10-5cm Dependence of crack growth velocity on crack lengh is seperated two regions that is for a large crack length it is predominated by Poiseuille pressure and effulent fluex but in the case of small crack length it is controlled by capillary effect.

  • ?In order to investigate effects of Zanthoxyli Fructus (Sample-A) and Fagarae mandshuricae Fructus (Sample-B), experimental study was performed through observation on isolated - ileum analgesic, hypothermal, anti-pyretic, anti-inflammatory, capillary permeability, blood flow rate, blood pressure and respiratory works. The results were as follows; 1. In spontaneous movement of mice isolated-ileum, both samples were noted to have strong inhibitory action after temporary contraction, and to show antagonism against acetylcholine chloride and barium chloride. 2. Both samples were showed to have antihistamin work on guinea pig isolated-ileum 3. In analgesic work by the acetic acid method, only Fagarae mandshuricae Fructus was proved to have significant analgesic effect in mice. 4. Both sample groups indicated anti-pyretic and anti-inflammatory effect. 5. Both samples were noted to have inhibitory effect against capillary permeability ?rise in mice. ?6. Both samples were noted to have dose-dependent falling effect on blood pressure in rabbits.

  • The objective of this work is to propose a procedure to simulate the flow in the LCM (Liquid Composites Molding) processes by finite difference discretization in a curvilinear coordinate system adapted to the shape of the saturated zone. The numerical results obtained are compared with experimental results obtained by an experimental device elaborated at our laboratory. It allows to realize linear and radial injections for different porosities and to observe the flow front kinetics. Numerical and experimental results are then compared with those of the literatures and excellent agreements are noticed. Finally, we suggest a concept of the capillary number to explain the variations of the permeability obtained for pressure values lower than 0.25 Bar.

  • A model for estimating daily effective rainfall of upland crops was developed. The infiltration process was described by Green-Ampt infiltration model developed by Chu(1978). The model considers delayed surface ponding and surface detention storage under a uniform soil profile. The Green-Ampt parameters, that is, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary pressure head on a sandy loam soil were determined from field experiment using Air-entry permeameter developed by Bouwer(1966). The model was verified by comparing measured and simulated surface runoff. The ratios of effective rainfall to total rainfall for red pepper, soybean, sesame and Chinese cabbage were evaluated using Borg's root growth model( 1986) respectively. The followings are a summary of this study results; 1.In a sandy loam soil average hydraulic conductivity was 3.28cm/hr and average capillary pressure head was 3.00cm. 2.The root growth of upland crops could be expressed by Borg's root growth model successively. 3.The measured and simulated surface runoff was agreed well with each other. 4.As the rainfall amount was increased, the ratio of effective rainfall to total rainfall was decreased exponentially till a certain growing period.

  • Numerical and experimental studies were performed to examine the characteristics of heat and mass transfer processes for a Micro Heat Pipe(MHP) with a triangular cross-section. Solutions on mass flow rate, pressure variation, and radius of meniscus were obtained using the mathematical model developed by Faghri and Khrustalev. To obtain an increase in capillary limitation, a triangular tube with curved walls was designed and fabricated. The measurement by microscope showed that the radius at corners of the tube was ranging between 0.03-0.05mm. Performance test for MHPs using the triangular tube with curved walls proved a substantial increasement in heat transport limitation, with 4.5W and 2.0W in case of using water and ethanol as a working fluid, respectively. In the previous study by Faghri a limitation of 0.5W was reported for a water MHP with a regular triangular tube.

  • In this study, effects of supplementary cementitious materials(fly ash, blast furnace slag and waste glass) on drying shrinkage of cement mortar were compared and evaluated. The results showed drying shrinkage of cement mortar using blast furnace slag and waste glass is larger than shrinkage due to capillary pressure, while using fly ash is smaller.

  • When a small tube is dipped into a liquid surface, surface tension forces cause the liquid in the tube to rise vertically against the gravity. When the tube is flexible, hydrostatic pressure difference caused by the capillary flow deforms the tube and the deformation which narrows the flow route changes the rising velocity. We study a simple model of this elastocapillary interaction in the context of the surface-tension-driven vertical rise of a liquid between two long flexible hydrophilic sheets that are held a small distance apart at one end. We provide an analytical theory for the rise rate of the liquid and show that our experiments are consistent with the theory.
