  • For the determination of a reservoir capacity Rippl's mass-curve method has long been used with the past river flow data assuming the same flow records will be repeated in the future. This study aims to find out a better method for determining the reservoir capacity by employing the analytical theory based on the stochastic process. For the present study the synthetic generation methods of Thomas-Fiering type was used to synthetically generate 50 years of monthly river inflows to three single-purpose reservoirs and three multi-purpose reservoirs. The generated sequences of monthly flows were analyzed based on the range concept. With the optimum operation rule of the reservoirs as the one which maximizes the water-use downstream the waterrelease from the reservoir was determined and with due consideration to the mean inflows and the range of monthly flows the required reservoirs capacity was stochastically determined. It was possible to repersent the so-determined reservoir capacity in terms of the mean monthly inflows and the number of subseries in the determination of ranges. It is suggested that the result obtained in this study would be applied to approximately estimate, in the stage of preliminary design, the required capacity of a reservoir in question with the limited information such as the mean monthly inflow and the period of reservoir operation.

  • This paper presents a bearing capacity determination method for spread footings subjected to vertical central loading and located above underground cavities. For the development of the method, a parametric study on bearing capacity of a spread footing located above an underground cavity was performed by using a threetimensional elasto-plastic finite element computer program. From the results of the finite element analysis, bearing capacity values for the conditions analyzed were determined and used as a data base from which semiempirical equation to for the bearing capacity determination method were formulated by means of a regression analysis. The effectiveness of this method was illustrated by comparing the bearing capacity values computed from this method with those of available model footing tests as well as finite element analysis data. It was concluded that the method presented in this paper can be effectively used for practical applications at least within the conditions investigated.

  • This article employs Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline (MARS) for determination of friction capacity of driven piles in clay. MARS is non-parametric adaptive regression procedure. Pile length, pile diameter, effective vertical stress, and undrained shear strength are considered as input of MARS and the output of MARS is friction capacity. The developed MARS gives an equation for determination of $f_s$ of driven piles in clay. The results of the developed MARS have been compared with the Artificial Neural Network. This study shows that the developed MARS is a robust model for prediction of $f_s$ of driven piles in clay.

  • In wireless cellular networks, previous researches on admission control policies and resource allocation algorithm considered the QoS (Quality of Service) in terms of CDP (Call Dropping Probability) and CBP (Call Blocking Probability). However, since the QoS was considered only within a predetermined cell capacity, the results indicated a serious overload problem of systems not guaranteeing both CDP and CBP constraints, especially in the hotspot cell. That is why a close interrelationship between CDP, CBP and cell capacity exists. Thus, it is indispensable to consider optimal cell capacity guaranteeing multiple QoS (CDP and CBP) at the time of initial cell planning for networks deployment. In this paper, we will suggest a distributed determination scheme of optimal cell capacity guaranteeing both CDP and CBP from a long-term perspective for initial cell planning. The cell-provisioning scheme is performed by using both the two-dimensional continuous-time Markov chain and an iterative method called the Gauss-Seidel method. Finally, numerical and simulation results will demonstrate that our scheme successfully determines an optimal cell capacity guaranteeing both CDP and CBP constraints for initial cell planning.

  • This paper presents a comprehensive work on determination of yield base shear coefficient and displacement ductility factor of three to eight story actual reinforced concrete buildings, instead of using generic frames. The building data is provided by a walkdown survey in different locations of the pilot areas. Very detailed three dimensional models of the selected buildings are generated by using the data provided in architectural and reinforcement projects. Capacity curves of the buildings are obtained from nonlinear static pushover analyses and each capacity curve is approximated with a bilinear curve. Characteristic points of capacity curve, the yield base shear capacity, the yield displacement and the ultimate displacement capacity, are determined. The calculated values of the yield base shear coefficients and the displacement ductility factors for directions into consideration are compared by those expected values given in different versions of Turkish Seismic Design Code. Although having sufficient lateral strength capacities, the deformation capacities of these typical mid-rise reinforced concrete buildings are found to be considerably low.

  • In general, the evaluation of water supply capacity is important factor to establish various establishment of water resource supply plan include water resource security and determination of dam's mass. But former researchs about estimation of water supply capacity were lack in continunity of evaluation basis, and didn't excute analysis on reliability criteria also. In this study, Nakdong river was selected for study basin, and then water supply capacity was analyzed by HEC-5 model using identical reliability criteria.

  • Although the load -settlement curve characteristics of embedded piles are different from those of driven piles, for the determination of their allowable loads the same analysis method has been adopted without any considerations. According to the related domestic chi teria, the analysis methods of load-settlement curve have some conflicts among themselves and have several vague points in obtaining the allowable capacity from ultimate or yield capacity. In order to solve those problems, the relevant literatures were reviewed. And also the result of 106 pile load tests was analysed. Analysis result indicates that analysis met hods of the load-settlement curve based on single mathematical curve are not suitable for the general analysis method of load-settlement curves due to their various characteristics. As a result, the appropriate analysis methods and safety factors for the determination of allowable capacity of pile are suggested in this paper.

  • Closed steel supports of different shapes are used in mining and underground constructions. The supports are prefabricated from rolled, usually robust, steel profiles. The load carrying capacity of a support is considerably influenced by the active loading and passive forces. The passive forces are induced by interactions between the support and the surrounding rock mass. The analysis herein comprises three parts: The first part consists of structural geometry processing. The second part involves finding the numerical solution of a statically indeterminate structure for a specified load. The third part is calculation of the load carrying capacity and the components of internal forces and deformations. For this, the force method and numerical integration are used. The Winkler model is applied when the support interacts with the surrounding environment. The load carrying capacity is limited by the slip resistance of the connected parts and it is limited by reaching the ultimate state of the profile. This paper serves as a comprehensive reference for the determination of the load carrying capacity of closed steel supports and includes stepwise derivations of the governing formulas.
