  • As the deep deck plate has the shape of open cross section, It can cause structural problems such as bending torsions due to instability of the section. There are a number of fasteners types which are frequently used on light gage steel diaphragms such as bolts, rivets, welds, and screws. In this study, the structural capacity of the self drilling screw connection between the deep deck and the reinforced cap plate was evaluated by experimental variables such as the arrangement method, numbers of screw, pitch of screw, and head plate thickness.

  • Various kinds of shear connector such as headed stud, channel, perforated steel plate and others are commonly used to transfer stress and present composite performance in composite structures, and many researches have been conducted to improve the characteristics of different types of shear connectors. It is focused in this study on the bending performance of steel pipe pile cap with the open type perforated shear connector for the composite connection to the spread footing. Nonlinear analysis was conducted, using ABAQUS, a finite element analysis program, to obtain information for determining the characteristics of the structure and to allow various parametric analysis for bending performance of steel pipe pile cap with the open perforated shear connector.

  • 1. This study was conducted to examine the effects of change of the short range nozzle hole on the travelling distance. The results of this study are summarized as follows; a) Effect of change of the cap hole diameter on the travelling distance of sprayed particles was generally a linear, the increasing rate was about 0.27. b) When the difference between the sectional area of cap hole and that of grooves of swirl plate, was small the travelling distance was decreased by the decreasing of spraying speed at cap hole. 2. This study was conducted to examine the effects of change of the short range nozzle hole on the size of spraying particles. The results of this study are summarized as follows; a) The diameter of sprayed particles on travelling distances in the short range nozzle did not coincide with the kinetic energy principle derived from the momentum and the resistance. b) The average diameter of sprayed particle between 1m and 3m in which amount of sprayed particle was particularly a great deal, was big, because that some of sprayed particles were absorbed each other on the way to fall c) Effect of increase of cap hole diameter was generally enlarged the average diameter of sprayed particle with small rate.

  • In this paper, the construction of secondary reaction plate is analyzed by 3-D Finite Element Method(3-D FEM) to consider the influence of its variation on the transverse edge effect of LIM. The effective 3-D analysis model for considering the transverse edge effect caused by the finite widths of the primary and the secondary is proposed. The simple method measuring the transverse edge effect by using the patterns of currents induced in the secondary reaction plate is also proposed. With this effective analysis method, various models of secondary reaction plate with overhang and cap has been analyzed to consider the relationship between the construction of secondary reaction plate and the transverse edge effect of LIM.

  • Some unreasonable results from the use of a popular thick plate element are discovered from the analysis of a raft foundation and a pile cap in Hong Kong. To overcome the problems, the authors have developed a new shear deformable beam which can be extended to a general quadrilateral shear deformable plate. The behaviour of this new element under several interesting cases is investigated, and it is demonstrated that the new element possesses very high accuracy under different depth/span ratios, and the results from this new element are good even for a coarse mesh.

  • A series of model tests were performed to investigate the soil arching effect in embankments supported by piles with geosynthetics. In the model tests, model piles with isolated cap were inserted through the holes in a steel plate, which could be operated up and down. Then geosynthetics was laid on the pile caps below sand fills. The settlement of soft ground was simulated by lowering the plate. As the plate was lowered, the soil arching was mobilized in the embankments. The deformation of both the sand fills and geosynthetics were captured by camera. Also the loads acting on pile cap and the tensile strain of geosynthetics were monitored by data logging system. Model tests showed that the embankment loads transferred on pile cap by soil arching Increased rapidly with settlement of the soft ground. In case of the absence of geosynthetics, the loads acting on pile caps dropped to residual value after peak value, whereas loads on pile caps gradually increased until constant value in case of geosynthetic-reinforced. This illustrated that reinforcing with the geosynthetics has a good effect to restrain the settlement of embankments. Also, the deformation shape of geosynthetics between pile caps was circular. The embankment loads transferred on pile caps can be estimated by considering both soil arching and tensile strain of geosynthetics in embankments supported by piles with geosynthetics.

  • The receptance method was applied for the analysis of a cylindrical shell with a curvaturated plate attached at the top of the shell. The boundary conditions of the shell considered here were clamped at the bottom and free at the top of the shell. Before the analysis of the shell/plate combined structure, the natural frequencies of the plate and the shell were calculated separately and then they were used in the calculation of the frequencies of the combined structure by the receptance method. The frequency equation of the combined structure was derived from the continuity condition at the junction of the shell and the plate. The frequencies for various curvature factors of the plate were presented and compared with those from ANSYS to show its validity of the present method.

  • In this paper, a series of repeated load tests were carried out on a 150 mm diameter plate simulative of vehicle passes, to demonstrate the benefits of soil-rubber shred mixture in decreasing the soil surface settlement of road embankment. The results show that the efficiency of rubber reinforcement is significantly a function of the rubber content, thickness of rubber-soil mixture and soil cap thickness over the mixture. Minimum surface settlement is provided by 2.5% of rubber in rubber-soil mixture, the thickness of mixture layer and soil cap of 0.5 times the loading surface diameter, giving values of 0.32-0.68 times those obtained in the unreinforced system for low and high values of amplitude of repeated load. In this installation, in contrast with unreinforced bed that shows unstable response, the rate of enhancement in settlement decreases significantly as the number of loading cycles increase and system behaves resiliently without undergoing plastic deformation. The findings encourage the use of rubber shreds obtained from non-reusable tires as a viable material in road works.
