The anatomical characteristics of eight major wood species planted in Indonesia were investigated to provide valuable information for their effective utilization. The growth-ring boundaries of Damar and Sumatran pine were indistinct. Resin canal was found in Sumatran pine but it was not observed in Damar. Cupressoid pit and taxodioid pit were found in Damar and window-like pit and pinoid pit were observed in Sumatran pine. Tracheid length of Damar and Sumatran pine was shorter than $3,000{\mu}m$. There were uniseriate rays in Damar and Sumatran pine and fusiform ray in Sumatran pine. All the hardwood species observed in this study were diffuse-porous. They had different vessel groups, i.e., solitary pore in Afrika and Simpur Batu, pore cluster in Angsana and mostly 2-4 rows of radial pore multiple in Mahoni. Mindi and Trembesi had mostly 2-3 rows of radial pore multiple with paratracheal parenchyma as aliform and confluent types. Afrika, Mahoni and Simpur Batu showed heterocellular rays which composed of procumbent cells in the body and mostly 1-2 rows of upright and/or square cells in the margin. All ray cells procumbent was observed in Angsana, Mindi and Trembesi. The large rays commonly exceeding 1 mm in height and ray width of 3~6 cells were observed in Simpur Batu. The other five hardwood species showed ray width of 1~3 cells. Vessel number per $mm^2$ of Angsana and Simpur Batu was higher than those of the other hardwood species. The length of wood fiber and tracheid showed a tendency to increase from pith to bark. By IAWA list, fiber length of hardwoods was classified into long in Simpur Batu and short in Angsana and Trembesi.
The purpose of this study was to compare the apical leakage of the root canal filled with the System B and the EndoTwinn(the combined application of heat and ultrasonic vibration). Sixty extracted premolars with straight root were cleaned and shaped to size 35. Group SB was obturated using System B and Group ET was filled with EndoTwinn. A size 35 of 0.06 tapered gutta-percha and Adseal were used and the plugger which could be introduced to 4 mm short of working length was selected in the obturation procedure. As the positive control, Group PC was not filled. In Group SB, ET and PC, all external surfaces of each tooth were coated with nail varnish leaving only 1 mm area around the apical foramen. In the negative control of Group NSB and Group NET, all of external tooth surface including apical foramen was coated with the nail varnish. The specimens were immersed in methylene blue dye solution for 2 days. Then the specimens were sectioned at each 1 mm from apex to 5 mm level. The final score of one specimen was given by summing up of the points at all levels. The dye leakage of Group ET was significantly less than that observed in Group SB (p < 0.05). And the frequency of gutta-percha pulling out from root canal when the plugger was removed was more often with the System B than with EndoTwinn but there was no significant difference.
Purpose : To evaluate clinical and radiographic differential diagnosis between ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst (OKC) using clinical data, plain radiographs, and CT. Materials and Methods: 25 cases of ameloblastoma and 44 cases of OKC diagnosed in biopsy, were selected from the files stored in Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, Seoul National University Dental Hospital from 1999 to 2001, and evaluated using following criteria: sex and age, location, shape, border to normal bone tissue, effect to adjacent tissues, homogeneity in the lumen of the lesion, response of the cortical bone, long-to-short length (LIS) ratio of the lesion, and expansion angle of the cortex. Results: Ameloblastoma and OKC were seen most frequently in third decades and no statistical significance was noted between both sexes. Ameloblastoma occurred most frequently in mandibular angle and ramus area (68%) and OKC at the maxillary molar (34.1 %), and mandibular angle and ramus area (43.2%). The root resorption of the adjacent teeth, mandibular canal displacement, and the impaction of teeth were seen more frequently in ameloblastoma than in OKC. The LIS ratio measured in CT was largest in maxillary OKC cases, followed by mandibular ameloblastoma, and mandibular OKC (1.2, 1.8 and 2.4 respectively). The expansion angle of the cortex shows a statistically significant difference between ameloblastoma (48.8°) and OKC (31.5°). Conclusion : The numeric morphology (LIS ratio) and expansion angle of the cortical bone of the lesion measured in computed tomography can be used to differentiate the ameloblastoma and odontogenic keratocyst.

Morphological changes in eggs and larvae of spotted knifejaw, Oplegnathus punctatus were observed by cultivation of fertilized eggs to juvenile stage. Fertilized egg was demersal and transparent. The egg has one oil glouble and its size ranged 1.01~1.15 mm ($1.08{\pm}0.10mm$; $mean{\pm}SD$, n=20). Culture chambers were maintained $22.5{\sim}24.5^{\circ}C$ in water temperature and 33.5~34.5ppt in salinity. It took 25 mins from fertilization to the blastoderm stage, 55 mins to 2 cell stage and 20 hrs 50 mins to hatching. Newly hatched yolksac larvae ranged 2.59~3.02 mm ($2.81{\pm}0.25mm$, n=5) in total length, and mouth and anus were not still open. Yolk and oil globule were absorbed 2 days after hatching (DAH). Flexion larvae in 12 DAH ranged 3.02~3.07 mm TL ($3.04{\pm}0.04mm$), and the caudal fin grew to fan-shaped, melanophores appeared on top of digestive canal.
This study was conducted to find optimum pollination methods for overcoming pre-fertilization incompatibility in interspecific crosses between L. longiflorum 'Gelria' (LG) and L. cernuum (LC). In cross combination of $LC{\times}LG$, the survival rate of the ovaries was higher in the cut style pollinations than in normal stigmatic pollination. Among the various cut style pollination methods, pollination after cutting the styles 2 3mm length above the ovary and top of the ovary were the most effective ones. No ovaries and ovules survived in cross pollination of $LC{\times}LG$. In self-pollination of LG and cross pollination of $LC{\times}LG$, pollens germinated on the stigma by 12 hours and reached to the ovules by 90 hours after pollination. However, in the cross pollination of $LC{\times}LG$, pollen tubes elongated very slowly until 48 hours after pollination and a lot of deformed tubes were observed in the styler canal having swelled tube tip and irregular heavy callose deposition. The pollination time after anthesis also affected on the survival rate of ovaries and ovules showing the best result when pollinated on three days after anthesis. Stigma exudate promoted slightly the enlargement of ovaries, but the survival rate of ovaries and ovules was not increased.

Objectives : Siguan points (LI4, LR3) have been most frequently applied for various diseases, especially different digestive disorders such as constipation, abdominal pain or various intestinal inflammatory diseases. The fact that gastrointestina movement is closely connected with physiologic functions or pathologic process of alimentary canal led us to ask the question if Siguan points affects on intestinal motility. Design: To investigate the effect of Siguan acupuncture on the intestinal movement in both physiologic and pathologic conditions, we divided the experimental animals into 12 groups. Six groups were pre-treated with loperamide (0.5 mg/kg, sc) or scoploamine (0.5 mg/kg, sc) to suppress the intestinal movement and another three groups were pretreated with carbachol (0.5 mg/kg, po) to activate it, whereas the rest three groups didn't receive any pretreatment to be kept in the physiological condition. After the administration with charcoal meal, mice were acupunctured bilaterally on sham point or Siguan points as the manner of tap-stimulation, with the exception of no acupuncture groups. Methods : Mice were scarified in twenty minutes after the administration of charcoal to measure the distance of charcoal passage from stomach-duodenal junction. The effect on intestinal movement was presented by calculating the relative distance where charcoal arrived to total length of small intestine. Results : In physiological state, charcoal meal passed around 53%, and there was no significant difference between Siguan points and sham points groups. On the other hand. Siguan points-sitimulation significantly ameliorated loperamide or scoplolamine-induced suppressed travel rate of 17.3 % and 18.6% in sham point into 26% and 26.3% respectively (p<0.05). In carbachol-induced accelerated condition, Siguan points-stimulation didn't affect intestinal motility comparing to sham point group passed about 97.6%. Conclusions : These results postulate that acupuncture at Siguan points have a therapeutic effect by restoring cholinergic activity on pathogenically suppressed intestinal peristalsis, but does not affect the gastrointestinal motility in the normal or accelerated condition.
Background: Generally, it is difficult to differentiate uterine malignant mixed M$\ddot{u}$ llerian tumor(MMMT) from endometrial carcinom in radiological and clinical aspects. Our purpose is to investigate MR findings that distinguishes MMMT from endometrial carcinoma. Materials and Methods: We retrogradely evaluated the magnetic resonance imaging findings of pathologically proven 5 cases of malignant mixed M$\ddot{u}$llerian tumor(MMMT) and 14 endometrial carcinomas to know the differential points of these two tumors originating in the endometrial cavity. The size of the mass, presence or absence of myometrial or uterine cervical invasion, growth pattern of the mass, signal intensity and degree and pattern of contrast enhancement were analyzed and compared. Results: The length of the long axis of the MMMT was 1.5-9.0cm(average, 5.7cm) but that of the endometrial carcinoma was 0.5-6.0cm(average, 2.5cm). Invasion of uterine cervix which was found in 3 MMMT cases, dilated the endometrial cavity and the lumen of the uterine cervix and showed the pattern of growing into the external os. Invasion of uterine cervix was found in only one case of endometrial carcinoma. The presence or absence of myometrial invasion, the signal intensity and homogeneity on T1- and T2-weighted images, and the degree and patterns of contrast enhancement showed no significant difference. Conclusion: Any specific finding to differentiate MMMT from endometrial carcinoma was not ascertained. However, MMMT can be suspected if the size of the endometrial mass is greater than 5cm and if the mass dilates the enocervical canal and invades the uterine cervix.

Common dental procedures(dental extraction & minor operation) are potentially stress-inducing in many patients, especially medically compromised patients. The body's response to dental stress involves the cardiovascular system(an increase in cardiovascular workload), the respiratory organ and the endocrine system(change in metabolism). To minimize the stress to the medical risk patient, the stress reduction protocol was established. The obtained contents were as follows: (1) Recognize the patient's degree of medical risk (2) Complete medical consultation before dental therapy (3) Schedule the patient's appointment in the morning (4) Monitor and record preoperative and postoperative vital signs (5) Use psychosedation during therapy (6) Use adequate pain control during therapy (7) Short length of appointment : do not exceed the patient's limits of tolerance (8) Follow up with postoperative pain/anxiety control (9) Telephone the higher medical risk patient later on the same day that treatment was given Though the stress reduction protocol above was applied to the dental extraction in medically compromised patients with the advanced infected teeth, the final responsibility for the complications(syncope, bleeding & infection, etc.) in a patient rests with the dentist who ultimately treats him. For the prevention of postextraction complications & poor prognosis, the authors treated the advanced infected teeth with the pulp extirpation, opening drainage through the canal and complete occlusal reduction. The final extraction and wound closure were then done after $1{\sim}2$ weeks. The final prognosis was comfortable without common complications.

The purpose of this study was to obtain information on the clinical and radiographic features of the dentigerous cysts in the jaws. For this study, the authors examined and analysed the clinical records and radiographs of 233 patients who had lesions of dentigerous cyst diagnosed by clinical and radiographic or histopathological examinations. And the obtained results were as follows: 1. Dentigerous cysts occurred the most frequently in the 2nd decade(38.2%) and occurred more frequently in males(67.4%) than in females(32.6%). 2. The most common clinical symptom was swelling of the jaw(33.9%), and the lesions were treated by the method of surgical removal. 3. The type of lesions was mainly observed as central type(72.5%), and size of the lesion was most frequently observed 2 - 2.9cm in the widest length. 4. The lesions were most frequently observed well-defined outline with hyperostotic border(49.8%), and smooth margin(73.4%), and homogeneous lesional radiolucency(79.4%). 5. Cortical thinning and expansion of the lesions(82.0%) were observed, and their direction were most frequently observed toward buccal side(64.0%). 6. The effect on the causative tooth were observed as tooth displacement(41.2%) and delayed root development(l9.3%), and the distance between cemento-enamel junction and lesional wall attachment of the causative tooth was mainly observed as below 2mm(79.6%). 7. The effect on the adjacent tooth were observed as loss of lamina dura(66.8%), root resorption(33.9%), and tooth displacement(31.5%). 8. The effects on the adjacent anatomic structures were observed as displacement of the mandibular canal(46.5%) and maxillary sinus or nasal cavity(72.2%).
In performing implant procedures in the anterior portion of the maxilla, many difficulties exist because of anatomical reasons, such as the proximity of the nasal floor, lateral extension of the incisive canal, and labial concavity. On the other hand, in the posterior region of the maxilla, there is often insufficient recipient bone between the maxillary sinus and alveolar ridge due to alveolar ridge resorption and pneumatization of the maxillary sinus. In order to perform implants in such regions, ridge augmentation procedures such as onlay bone graft, guided bone regeneration, and maxillary sinus grafting are performed. In studies of Caucasians, use of autograft from mandibular symphysis has been reported to be highly successful in maxillary sinus grafting. However, in a clinical study of Koreans, autograft of mandibular symphysis has been reported to have significantly low success rate. It has been hypothesized that this is because of insufficient cancellous bone due to thick cortical bone. In order to test this hypothesis, bone quality and morphology of Koreans can be compared with those of Caucasians. In this study, the bone density and morphology of the cortical bone and cancellous bone in the mandibular symphysis of 35 Korean cadavers were evaluated. The following results were obtained: 1. In terms of bone density, type I, type II, and type III consisted of 1.4%(3/213), 72.3%(154/213), and 26.3%(56/213) of the cross-sectioned specimens, respectively. In general, the bone density tended to change from type II to type III, as cross-sectioned specimens were evaluated from the midline to the canine. Type IV wasn't observed in this study. 2. The distance between the root apex and the lower border of the cancellous bone was 18.34mm-20.59mm. Considering that the bone has to be cut 5mm below the root apex during the procedure, autografts with about 15mm of vertical thickness can be obtained. 3. The thickness of cortical bone on the labial side increased from the root apex to the lower border of the mandible. The average values ranged from 1.43mm to 2.36mm. 4. The labio-lingual thickness of cancellous bone ranged from 3.43mm to 6.51mm. The thickness tended to increase from the apex to the lower border of the mandible and decrease around the lower border of cancellous bone. From the above results, the anatomic factors of the mandibular symphysis (bone density, thickness, quantity and length of the cortical bone and cancellous bone) didn't show any difference from Caucasians, and it cannot be viewed as the cause of failure in autografts in the maxillary sinus for implants.
