Objectives: The purpose of this study was to determine the incidence of radix molaris (RM) (entomolaris and paramolaris) in the mandibular first permanent molars of a sample Saudi Arabian subpopulation using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Materials and Methods: A total of 884 CBCT images of 427 male and 457 female Saudi citizens (age 16 to 70 years) were collected from the radiology department archives of 4 dental centers. A total of 450 CBCT images of 741 mature mandibular first molars that met the inclusion criteria were reviewed. The images were viewed at high resolution by 3 examiners and were analyzed with Planmeca Romexis software (version 5.2). Results: Thirty-three (4.5%) mandibular first permanent molars had RM, mostly on the distal side. The incidence of radix entomolaris (EM) was 4.3%, while that of radix paramolaris was 0.3%. The RM roots had one canal and occurred more unilaterally. No significant difference in root configuration was found between males and females (p > 0.05). Types I and III EM root canal configurations were most common, while type B was the only RP configuration observed. Conclusions: The incidence of RM in the mandibular first molars of this Saudi subpopulation was 4.5%. Identification of the supernumerary root can avoid missing the canal associated with the root during root canal treatment.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of tricalcium phosphate and Vitapex on the dogs' periapical tissues. Twenty mandibular premolars from 5 healthy dogs were used for this study. After the animals were anesthetized intramuscularly, pulp chambers were open and pulp tissue was extirpated with a barbed broach and H-file. Then the working length of the root canal was measured with H-file and pulp tissue was completely removed. Before the actual canal filling, the root canals of twenty teeth have been experimentally infected with opening the pulp chamber for 5 weeks. Periapical radiographs of the experimental teeth were taken to monitor the periapical pathological condition. Each root apex of 20 premolars was perforated with engine reamer and the root canals were enlarged with No. 30-60 H-files. They were divided into treated as follows. Control group: The root canal was filled with gutta-percha. Experimental group 1: The canal was dried with sterile paper points and mixture of tricalcium phosphate and physiological saline was overfilled beyond the root apex with a lentulo spiral. Then the root canal was filled gutta-percha and lateral condensation and the pulp chamber was filled with Caviton. Experimental group 2: The root canals were overfilled with Vitapex and were treated in the same manner as those in experimental group 1 At 1,2,3, and 8 weeks after experiment, the periapical tissues including the alveolar bone were fixed with 10% formalin solution for I week and decalcified with Plank-Rycho solution for 5 weeks. The specimens were embedded in paraffin and serial sections were cut into a thickness of 6 ${\mu}m$ at the plane of the root apex. Hematoxyline-eosin and Masson's trichrome stain were made for the histo-pathological examinations. The results were as follows: 1. Ingrowth of collagen fiber was observed from 1 week in control group and experimental groups. 2. The rate of bone formation of experimental group 1 was accelerated more than that of experimental group 2. 3. Resorption of cementum was seen in control group, but apposition of cementum was seen in experimental groups.
Experiments were carried out to find the difference of resin canal numbers by tree age and topophysis of crown of black pine needles, and the results were summarized as follows. 1. The average numbers of resin canal by tree age were increased from the age of 5 years were not difference between 10 and thereafter years significantly. 2. In this observation, the range of resin canal number was 2 to 9. 3. The numbers by the topophysis of crown did not show significant differences but the individual trees showed significant variations in the canal number in younger trees.
Geumgang canal is planned to connect Geumgang lake with Saemangeum lake to accelerate desalinization and dilute polluted water to improve water quality in Saemangeum lake. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact of water quality on Geumgang lake by diversion of its lake flow to Saemangeum lake. WASP5 model was used to estimate water quality of Geumgang lake. Model calibration and verification were done for water quality data for 2001 and 2002. Water quality concentrations in Geumgang lake were simulated for 4 scenarios, which were considered whether the Geumgang canal is built or not. As a result of simulations, there was little impact on water quality in Geumgang lake, though a little of the Geumgang lake flow diverted to Saemangeum lake. As the Geumgang canal is planned to divert the Geumgang water flow which were discharged into the sea through sluice gates when canal is not built, it is thought that there will be little change by diversion of water flow.

The location of the mandibular canal and the cortical thickness of the mandible is important in the practice of dentistry. This study was performed on twenty chosen dry mandibles, which were of adults and included fully erupted premolars and molars. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the location of the mandibular canal and the cortical thickness of the mandible on computed tomograms and to aid in the surgical treatment plans. The obtained results were as follows; 1. The horizontal distance between the mandibular canal and the buccal external border was 6.6±0.9mm on Somesial root of the first molar), and it was increased posteriorly. The horiwntal distance between the mandibular canal and the lingual external border was 4.1±1.lmm on S/sub 0/, and it was decreased posteriorly. 2. The vertical distance between the alveolar crest and the mandibular canal was 16.9±1.6mm on S/sub 0/, and it was decreased posteriorly. The vertical distance between the inferior border of mandible and the mandibular canal was 8.8±1.3mm on S/sub 0/, and it was increased anteriorly and posteriorly. 3. The thickness of the buccal cortical plate was 2.2±0.4mm on S/sub 0/. and it was increased posteriorly. But, that of the lingual cortical plate was 2.0±0.6mm on S/sub 0/ and it was decreased posteriorly. 4. The area of the buccal cortical plate was 66.5±1.0mm² on S/sub 0/. and it was increased posteriorly. But, that of the lingual cortical plate was 65.8±0.9mm² on S/sub 0/ and it was decreased posteriorly.
Periapical lesions develop as a result of immunopathologic response to irritants from infected root canal systems. Removal of these irritants from the root canal system and sealing the root canal space may induce he31ing of the periapical lesions. 83 periapical lesions diagnosed as periapical abscess, periapical granuloma, chronic nonspecific inflammation, fibrosis and periapical Cyst were evaluated for the distribution of immunoglobulin containing cells. The influence of the state of root canal treatment on the distribution of immunoglobulin containing cells has evaluated. All lesions were divided into a group with no treatment, a group with canal enlargement, a group filled with gutta percha, and a group filled with Vitapex(calcium hydroxide). The distribution of immunoglobulin-containing cells according to the presence of pain and fistula was also evaluated. The following results were obtained. 1. Statistically significant difference in the distribution of immunoglobulin-containing cells among periapical abscess, periapical granuloma, chronic nonspecific inflammation/fibrosis and periapical cyst were found.(Kruskal-Wallis analysis, P<0.05) The number of immunoglobulin-containing cells in fibrosis was remarkably lower than that of periapical abscess, granuloma and cyst. 2. IgM and IgA containing cells were predominantly observed in periapical abscesses and periapical cysts, respectively. 3. All periapical lesions showed a large number of IgG containing cells followed by IgM, IgA and IgE containing cells. 4. There was a decrease in all Ig-containing cells in the group with canal filling compared to groups without treatment or with enlargement. That is, there is a decrease in Ig-containing cells as treatment progresses. 5. No significant correlation existed between the presence of pain and fistula and the distribution of immunoglobulin containing cells in periapical lesions.(t-test) Results appear to support that immune response are actively involved in the development and progress in periapical lesions. The fact that distribution of immunoglobulins differ according to the state of endodontic treatment suggests that root canal treatment may alter the humoral immune response of the periapical lesions.
The purpose of this study was to compare the shaping abilities of LightSpeed, ProTaper-Universal, and hybrid technique using S-series of ProTaper-Universal and LigthSpeed. The 72 simulated root canals of J-shape were used and classified as flowing 3 groups according to the instrumentation methods; Group P of 24 canal blocks were prepared with ProTaper-Universal, Group L was prepared with LightSpeed, and Group H was prepared with hybrid technique (initial shaping with ProTaper-Universal SI and S2 and apical shaping with LightSpeed from #25 to #50). A second-year resident of Endodontic department prepared the resin block canals to apical size #50 (F5 in Group P). The time lapses for instrumentation and the reduction of root canal curvature after shaping were measured. The pre- and post-instrumented root canals were scanned and superimposed to evaluate and calculate the increased canal width and apical centering ratio. The results were as followings: Group Land H showed significant less instrumentation time than Group P (p < 0.05). The ProTaper system showed greater reduction of root canal curvature and working length diminishment than other methods (p < 0.05). LightSpeed system showed best canal curvature preserving characteristics. The Group P had greater instrumented widths at all levels examined (p < 0.05). Group L and Group H showed lower centering ratio (ability to preserve the canal center; the lower ratio means the better canal center preservation) than Group P (p < 0.05). Group H had the lowest centering ratio at the 1 mm level.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the cleaning efficacy of different final irrigation regimens in canal and isthmus of mandibular molars, and to evaluate the influence of related variables on cleaning efficacy of the irrigation systems. Materials and Methods: Mesial root canals from 60 mandibular molars were prepared and divided into 4 experimental groups according to the final irrigation technique: Group C, syringe irrigation; Group U, ultrasonics activation; Group SC, VPro StreamClean irrigation; Group EV, EndoVac irrigation. Cross-sections at 1, 3 and 5 mm levels from the apex were examined to calculate remaining debris area in the canal and isthmus spaces. Statistical analysis was completed by using Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test for comparison among groups, and multivariate linear analysis to identify the significant variables (regular replenishment of irrigant, vapor lock management, and ultrasonic activation of irrigant) affecting the cleaning efficacy of the experimental groups. Results: Group SC and EV showed significantly higher canal cleanliness values than group C and U at 1 mm level (p < 0.05), and higher isthmus cleanliness values than group U at 3 mm and all levels of group C (p < 0.05). Multivariate linear regression analysis demonstrated that all variables had independent positive correlation at 1 mm level of canal and at all levels of isthmus with statistical significances. Conclusions: Both VPro StreamClean and EndoVac system showed favorable result as final irrigation regimens for cleaning debris in the complicated root canal system having curved canal and/or isthmus. The debridement of the isthmi significantly depends on the variables rather than the canals.
The aim of the research is to find out the direction of unit-plans in multi-dwellings for the future society. Shinonome Canal Court where residents actually live now are the objects in this study, and the residential floor plan of unit-plans were analyzed to find out the typical types. The analysis was focused on the unit-plans of 5 blocks of Shinonome Canal Court. Space Syntax Theory was used as the analysis method. As the first stage of the analysis, justified graphs were made to find out the characters of unit-plans through the classification of the graphs. Contents of the analysis are as follows: Relationship between classified justified graphs and dimension according to node number. Relationship between classified justified graph patterns and unit-plans. Characters of unit-plans in each blocks. Shinonome Canal Court consists of mainly small scale unit-plans and 30unit-plans are classified. 1LDK, 2LDK, 1LDK+S, 1LDK+f are typical unit-plans which are mainly supplied in the complex. It is noted that the results of the analysis by node, justified graph pattern and dimension are the same. It also presents diverse unit-plans which shows a change in nLDK pattern or add f (foyer), AN (annex), S (service room), Fs (free space) to basic nLDK type. In summary, it demonstrates the possibility of creating new residental floor plans in multi-dwellings.

This study was carried out to investigate the relation between seepage losses and flow section area in earth canals. Totally 77 seepage measurement was gained by ponded method and the tested canals belong to the irrigation area of Farmland Improvement Association in each province, Korea. The results obtained from this study may be used as a reasonable criteria for the estimation of canal seepage losses in the design of irrigation systems. Obtained results are summarized as follows: 1. Average seepage rates in each Soils is 14cm/day in ML, 6. 3cm/day in CL and 24.9 cm/day in SM. 2. Water depth and water surface width in eath canals have little influenced on the seepage rate, while the seepage losses was increased in proportion as the water surface width lengthens. 3. A formula of S=C.An defining a relationship between seepage losses and flow section was derieved as follows. ML:S=O. 35 VA 1.20 (m$^3$/day/m) CL:S=O. 13 VA 0.84 SM:s=O.67VA-1.56 4. The average seepage loss rates per 1km of canal are as followings. Measured Time ML CL SM 0-4 hrs 2.2% 0.6% 4.5% 4-2 4hrs 1.0% 0.15% 2.0% In above table we may obtain the following results. The first row is suitable for the canal having short delivery time of irrigation, while the second row for the canal having long delivery time.
