  • Mesoscale soil moisture measurement from the promising Cosmic-Ray Neutron Probe (CRNP) is expected to bridge the gap between large scale microwave remote sensing and point-based in-situ soil moisture observations. Traditional calibration based on $N_0$ method is used to convert neutron intensity measured at the CRNP to field scale soil moisture. However, the static calibration parameter $N_0$ used in traditional technique is insufficient to quantify long term soil moisture variation and easily influenced by different time-variant factors, contributing to the high uncertainties in CRNP soil moisture product. Consequently, in this study, we proposed a modified traditional calibration method, so-called Dynamic-$N_0$ method, which take into account the temporal variation of $N_0$ to improve the CRNP based soil moisture estimation. In particular, a nonlinear regression method has been developed to directly estimate the time series of $N_0$ data from the corrected neutron intensity. The $N_0$ time series were then reapplied to generate the soil moisture. We evaluated the performance of Dynamic-$N_0$ method for soil moisture estimation compared with the traditional one by using a weighted in-situ soil moisture product. The results indicated that Dynamic-$N_0$ method outperformed the traditional calibration technique, where correlation coefficient increased from 0.70 to 0.72 and RMSE and bias reduced from 0.036 to 0.026 and -0.006 to $-0.001m^3m^{-3}$. Superior performance of the Dynamic-$N_0$ calibration method revealed that the temporal variability of $N_0$ was caused by hydrogen pools surrounding the CRNP. Although several uncertainty sources contributed to the variation of $N_0$ were not fully identified, this proposed calibration method gave a new insight to improve field scale soil moisture estimation from the CRNP.

  • In this study, we estimate parameters of a distributed hydrologic model, GRM (grid based rainfall-runoff model), using a model-independent parameter estimation tool, PEST. We implement auto calibration of model parameters such as initial soil moisture, multipliers of overland roughness and soil hydraulic conductivity in the Geumho River Catchment and the Gamcheon Catchment using radar rainfall estimates and ground-observed rainfall represented by Thiessen interpolation. Automatic calibration is performed by GRM-MP (multiple projects), a modified version of GRM without GUI (graphic user interface) implementation, and "Parallel PEST" to improve estimation efficiency. Although ground rainfall shows similar or higher cumulative amount compared to radar rainfall in the areal average, high spatial variation is found only in radar rainfall. In terms of accuracy of hydrologic simulations, radar rainfall is equivalent or superior to ground rainfall. In the case of radar rainfall, the estimated multiplier of soil hydraulic conductivity is lower than 1, which may be affected by high rainfall intensity of radar rainfall. Other parameters such as initial soil moisture and the multiplier of overland roughness do not show consistent trends in the calibration results. Overall, calibrated parameters show different patterns in radar and ground rainfall, which should be carefully considered in the rainfall-runoff modelling applications using radar rainfall.

  • This paper deals with the position determination problem of stereo camera systems used as a sensor for 3D robotic manipulation. Stereo cameras having parallel rays of sight and been set up on the same baseline are assumed. The distance between the sensor and the space measured is determined so as to get insensitive parameters to the uncertainty of control points used for calibration and to satisfy the error condition set by considering the repeatability of the robot. The baseline width is determined by minimizing the mutual effect of 3D positional error and stereo image coordinate error. Unlike existing techniques, the technique proposed here is developed without complicated constraints and modelling process of the object to be observed. Thus, the technique of this paper is more general and its effectiveness is proved by simulation.

  • The nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and atomic magnetic resonance (AMR) plays a fundamental role in achieving a high accuracy of magnetic field measurements. Magnetic field unit (T) was realized based on the shielded proton gyromagnetic ratio (${\gamma}^{\prime}_P$), helium-4 gyromagnetic ratio (${\gamma}_{4He}$) and related techniques. The magnetic field standard system has been disseminated by the NMR magnetometer and electromagnet, a Helmholtz coil system, and AMR magnetometer in the nonmagnetic laboratory. A magnetic field standard below 1 mT has been developed by using Cs and Cs- $^4He$ AMR with automatic compensation of an external magnetic field noise. The standards serve for the calibration of magnetometers and support the test of sensors and materials in the range from $5{\mu}T$ to 2.0 T with (1 to 50) ${\mu}T/T$ uncertainty (k=2).

  • An electromagnetic flowmeter(EMF) was developed and its characteristics were compared with a commercial EMF. The measuring tube of the EMF was basically designed as 100 m diameter. A signal processing circuit was also developed for generating the magnetic field and converting the flow signal to flowrate and flow quantity. To obtain a more stable and reliable flow signal, the double magnetizing frequency was adopted for magnetizing the coil of the EMF For the characterization of EU, the uncertainty of calibrator was estimated within ${\pm}0.5{\%}$, the method of estimation was in accordance with the ISO 17025 recommendation. It was found that the flow signals between the electrodes were about ${\pm}60\;-\;{\pm}300{\mu}V$, which were sufficient for the discrimination of the flowmeter and protecting the noise. The test result against the calibrator, showed the good linearity in the range of $3 m^{3}/h\;and\;70m^{3}/h$. A commercialized design of the EMF will be technically more competitive in domestic and foreign market.

  • We have applied nonlinear interferometry of coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS) to measure the nonresonant third order susceptibilities of various gases. For the experiment, we placed two gas cells serially and filled the first cell with argon as a calibration standard and the second cell with gases under test. The interference fringes of the CARS signals generated in the two gas cells were obtained by changing the thickness of the phase shifting unit which was made of BK-7 glass. The total effective nonresonant susceptibilities were determined from the measured amplitudes of the interference fringes of the CARS signals of the gases. The nonresonant susceptibilities were obtained by subtracting off resonant vibrational contributions from the total effective susceptibilities. The results of this work are compared with the published data and the overall uncertainty is estimated to be less than 5%. an 5%.

  • It is highly needed to measure the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration field in water for a variety of purposes such as biological, industrial, environmental monitoring and medical application. Application of PSP (Pressure Sensitive Paint) which is sensitive to oxygen concentration has been carried out to measure DO concentration field using PtOEP/PS film and intensity based method under the UV-LEDs illumination. A micro round water jet having 100% of DO was obliquely impinged on to a PtOEP/PS film coated plate placed in a 0% of DO water container. DO concentration fields on the impinging plate were quantitatively visualized with a $2.94\;{\mu}m$ of spatial resolution. Through pixel-by-pixel calibration, uncertainty of each pixel by different sensitivity, different dye concentration and non-uniformity of illumination was removed. It is demonstrated that the high DO concentration region was coincided with the impingement area. The DO concentration gradient due to DO diffusion was affected by Reynolds number.

  • A Coriolis mass flowmeter(CMF), which has U-Shaped unique measurins tube was developed fo. direct mass flow measurement. In order to convert the time difference between two measuring tubes motion into mass flowrate and flow quantity, a signal processing circuit, as a part of CMF, was also developed. The CMF was designed as the 15 mm nominal diameter of pipe connection and the 8 mm stainless steel(sus 316) pipe was used for measuring tube. To maximize the flow signal(time difference) from the measuring tubes, the natural frequency of measuring tube was adjusted as 220 Hz, which is same as the frequency of exciter. The maximum displacement at the end of the measuring tube was measured as 0.05 mm and the maximum time difference between two measuring tubes was observed as $20{\mu}s$, which was proper for discrimination and measuring range of CMF. The developed CMF was tested against the gravimetric flowmeter calibrator in the range of 3 kg/min and 30 kg/min. The results showed that the CMF has good linearity and repeatability in the tested flow range. Large size of CMF base on the current study experience will be developed.

  • The turbine flowmeter is selected for high precision and reproducibility at the time of flow rate measurement but causes various uncertainty factors of measurement in the difference between the standard environmental condition at calibration and the environmental condition at the site. Also, a reliable interpolation method is required for use in sections other than calibrated measurement values. Therefore, in this paper, in order to improve the reliability of the flow rate measurement, we designed and manufactured a device that accurately measures the output signal of the turbine flowmeter, interpolates the value of the calibrated result value, and corrects the temperature change in real time We confirmed the reliability of the measurement at the site to carry out the performance verification.
