  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been used for imaging surfaces and measuring surface forces at the nano-scale. Force calibration is important for the quantitative measurement of forces at the nano-scale using AFM. Normal force calibration is relatively straightforward, whereas the lateral force calibration is more complicated since the lateral stiffness of the cantilever is often comparable to the contact stiffness. In this work, the lateral force calibrations of the rectangular cantilever were performed using torsional Sader's method, thermal noise method, and wedge calibration method. The lateral optical lever sensitivity for the thermal noise method was determined from the friction loop under various normal forces as well. Experimental results showed that the discrepancies among the results of the different methods were as large as 30% due to the effect of the contact stiffness on the lateral force calibration of the cantilever used in this work. After correction for the effect of contact stiffness, all the calibration results agreed with each other, within experimental uncertainties.

  • The purpose of this research is to determine the calibration constants of the wind speed measurement systems required to calculate the wind tunnel velocity in the test section. In the present work, the aerodynamic calibration tests of the test section were conducted in the Agency for Defense Development's Low-Speed Wind Tunnel. The test speed ranged from 10 to 100 m/s with a reference pitot-static pressure probe. The validity of the calibration results was evaluated by comparing them with the previous calibration constants. The calibration results show that fair to good agreement is obtained with resonable accuracy.

  • Camera calibration is an important part of machine vision and close-range photogrammetry. Since current calibration methods fail to obtain ideal internal and external camera parameters with limited computing resources on mobile terminals efficiently, this paper proposes an improved fast camera calibration method for mobile terminals. Based on traditional camera calibration method, the new method introduces two-order radial distortion and tangential distortion models to establish the camera model with nonlinear distortion items. Meanwhile, the nonlinear least square L-M algorithm is used to optimize parameters iteration, the new method can quickly obtain high-precise internal and external camera parameters. The experimental results show that the new method improves the efficiency and precision of camera calibration. Terminals simulation experiment on PC indicates that the time consuming of parameter iteration reduced from 0.220 seconds to 0.063 seconds (0.234 seconds on mobile terminals) and the average reprojection error reduced from 0.25 pixel to 0.15 pixel. Therefore, the new method is an ideal mobile terminals camera calibration method which can expand the application range of 3D reconstruction and close-range photogrammetry technology on mobile terminals.

  • The present study suggests the application of a depth camera for wave height field measurement, focusing on the calibration procedure and test setup. Azure Kinect system is used to measure the water surface elevation, with a field of view of 800 mm × 800 mm and repetition rate of 30 Hz. In the optimal optical setup, the spatial resolution of the field of view is 288 × 320 pixels. To detect the water surface by the depth camera, tracer particles that float on the water and reflects infrared is added. The calibration consists of wave height scaling and correction of the barrel distortion. A polynomial regression model of image correction is established using machine learning. The measurement results by the depth camera are compared with capacitance type wave height gauge measurement, to show good agreement.

  • All CCD pixels do not react uniformly even if the light of same radiance enters into the camera. This comes from the different camera optical characteristics, the read-out characteristics, the pixel own characteristics and so on. Usually, the image data of satellite camera can be corrected by the various image-processing methods in the ground. However, sometimes, the in-orbit correction is needed to get the higher quality image. Especially high frequency pixel correction in the middle of in-orbit mission is needed because the in-orbit data compression with the high frequency loss is essential to transmit many data in real time due to the limited RF bandwidth. In this case, this high frequency correction can prevent have to have any unnecessary high frequency loss. This in-orbit correction can be done by the specific correction table, which consists of the gain and the offset correction value for each pixel. So, it is very important to get more accurate correction table for good correction results. This paper shows the new algorithm to get accurate pixel correction table. This algorithm shall be verified theoretically and also verified with the various simulation and the test results.

  • The electronic distance measurement instrument, first introduced in the 1950s has, since those early days, undergone continual refinement. Rapid advances in related technologies have provided lighter, smaller and more precise equipment. Understanding for the principle, the standardized observation technique and the precision of EDM instrument is mostly important to improve the quality and the reliability of by-product in the field of engineering and industrial surveying. Simple and accurate calibration is regularly and periodically necessary to maintenance the precision of EDM instrument. This paper describes the calculated example of zero error and scale error as a correction of EDM by applying the least square method to baseline observations. Here we deals also with the testing criteria for precision instrument testing according to different types of EDM instruments.

  • This paper addresses photometric distortion problems of a compact 3D scanning sensor which is composed of a micro-size and inexpensive camera-projector system. Recently, many micro-size cameras and projectors are available. However, erroneous 3D scanning results may arise due to the poor and nonlinear photometric properties of the sensors. This paper solves two inherent photometric distortions of the sensors. First, the response functions of both the camera and projector are derived from the least squares solutions of passive and active calibration, respectively. Second, vignetting correction of the vision camera is done by using a conventional method, however the projector vignetting is corrected by using the planar homography between the image planes of the projector and camera, respectively. Experimental results show that the proposed technique enhances the linear properties of the phase patterns that are generated by the sensor.

  • Due to the fact that fish-eye lens can provide super wide angles with the minimum number of cameras, field-of-view over 180 degrees, many vehicles are attempting to mount the camera system. Camera calibration should be preceded, and geometrical correction on the radial distortion is needed to provide the images for the driver's assistance. However, vehicle fish-eye cameras have diagonal output images rather than circular images and have asymmetric distortion beyond the horizontal angle. In this paper, we introduce a camera model and metric calibration method for vehicle cameras which uses feature points of the image. And undistort the input image through a perspective projection, where straight lines should appear straight. The method fitted vehicle fish-eye lens with different field of views.

  • In this paper, the image modelling of road's lane markings is established using view frustum(VF) model. From this model, a measurement system of lane markings and obstacles is proposed. The system also involve the real time processing of the 3D position coordinate and the distance data from the camera to the points on the 3D world coordinate by virtue of the camera calibration. In order to reduce their measurement error, an useful algorithm for which analyze the geometric variations due to traveling vehicle's fluctuation using VF model is proposed. In experiments, without correction, for instance, the $0.4^{\circ}$ of pitching rotation gives the error of $0.4{\sim}0.6m$ at the distance of 10m, but the more far distance cause exponentially the more error. We con finned that this algorithm can be reduced less than 0.1m of error at the same condition.
