  • In this study, the pollutants contained in water and soil samples taken from the explosive demolition site were examined to investigate the effects on environment, and management plan of non-point source pollution in the demolition site was suggested through characterizing the movement of the pollutant with time. As results, pH value of the water and soil samples after the demolition work was 8.5~9.3 which exceeds the Korean environmental criterion of water and soil range due to calcium hydroxide compounds in the concrete. The concentration level of heavy metals caused by the explosive demolition doesn't exceed the environmental criterion of water and soil doesn't exceed the environmental criterion of water and soil quality, and the influence of water and soil pollution on the environment was not considered. The concentration of the heavy metals was analyzed and that of Cr, Cu, Zn and Hg among the heavy metals increased after the drilling and explosive demolition. This says that concentration of the heavy metals during explosive demolition works needs to be monitored. The most pollutants with time or rain dilution into the demolition site decreased and this means that the pollutants caused by the explosive demolition might have influenced to vicinity of the demolition sites as non-point pollution.

  • Curcumin is a natural phenolic yellow curry spice, derived from the tumeric, which has been used for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress and inflammation. Curcumin is known to have both anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties can be beneficial to protect the brain from the neurodegenerative diseases. We now report the neuroprotective effects of curcumin pretreatment in primary hippocampal neurons to glutamate-induced excitotoxicity. Pretreatment of embryonic mouse hippocampal cell cultures with low does of curcumin protected neurons against glutamate-induced death, however, this neuroprotection was not correlated with the modulation of oxidative stress. Interestingly, high dose of curcumin showed the cytotoxicity in primary cultured hippocampal neurons. Immunoblot analyses showed that levels of stress response. protein HSP70 were significantly elevated in neurons exposed to low dose of curcumin, whereas levels of cleaved PARP were increased in neurons exposed to high dose of curcumin. These findings show that curcumin can modulate neuronal responses to glutamate, and suggest possible use of curcumin and related compounds in the prevention and/or treatment of neurodegenerative disorders.

  • A laboratory study was carried out to investigate the effects of application level of soil amendments, mixing method of soil amendments, and compost treatment on desalinization by examining the changes in hydraulic conductivity and chemical properties of effluent of the soil during desalinization. 1. The treatment of soil amendments brought about the increase in hydraulic conductivity. 2. The higher the application level of a soil amendment, the higher the hydraulic conductivity and the shorter the time elapsed to complete the desalinization. 3. Complete mixing of calcium compounds was more effective for desalinization than surface mixing. 4. The compost treatment induced the rise in pH and therefore brought about the remarkable drop in hydraulic conductivity. 5. During the desalinization, the changes in physical and chemical properties of the soil were influenced by the kind and application level of soil amendments, mixing method of soil amendment, and compost treatment.

  • CaF2 single crystal has a large band gap (12 eV), and it is used for optical windows, prisms, and lenses due to its excellent transmittance in a wide wavelength range and low refractive index. Moreover, it is expected to be one of the materials for ultraviolet transmissive laser optical components. CaF2 belongs to the fluoride compounds and has a face-centered cubic (FCC) structure with three sub-lattices. The representative method for CaF2 single crystal growth is Czochralski, which method has the advantages of high production efficiency and the ability to make large crystals. In this study, X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray rocking curves (XRC) measurement, and chemical etching were performed to analyze the crystallinity and defect density of the CaF2 single crystals, grown by the Czochralski method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy systems were used to investigate the optical properties of the CaF2 crystal. The provability of various applications, including UV application, was systematically investigated with various analysis results.

  • The use of sulfur(S) in concrete has been variously studied as a way to improve salt resistance in concrete. However, sulfur is a solid material and is difficult to powder, which has disadvantages in its usability as an admixture or mixture for cement and concrete. For these problem, polymers such as dicyclopentadiene have been used to modify sulfur, but this also exists in a sticky state after modifying and does not improve the fundamental problem. So, reforming sulfur with slaked lime and the effect on cement hydration was examined by reforming sulfur with slaked lime, and the following conclusions were obtained. Depending on the reaction conditions, slaked lime modified bio-sulfur exists in a slurry state containing unreacted sulfur, unreacted slaked lime, calcium-sulfur(Ca-S) compounds and water. When slaked lime modified bio-sulfur is used as a cement mixture, salt resistance of concrete with slaked lime modified bio-sulfur is to be superior to that of plain concrete. This is believed to be because structure of cement hydrates with slaked lime modified bio-sulfur is to be more dense to that of plain cement hydrates by the continued presence of ettringite and can be used as a cement mixture in concrete.

  • This study sought to determine the desiccation tolerance and storage behavior of Sarcandra glabra seeds to assist in the establishment of an ex-situ conservation strategy for the species. The basic germination characteristics of S. glabra seeds were investigated. Subsequently, the seeds were dried to various desiccation levels to allow for analysis of their germination characteristics and seed integrity. In addition, the seeds were subjected to germination tests after being stored for different durations. The initial seed moisture content following the removal of the fleshy fruit was 32.8%, and the fresh seeds maintained their seed viability even after a decrease in the seed moisture content to 4.8%, while the germination percentage was 81.0%. The germination percentage of the seeds decreased to 55.0% and 30.0% when they were desiccated to moisture contents of 2.3% and 2.2%, respectively. By contrast, when the stored seeds were desiccated, they maintained their seed viability and vigor at a moisture content of 18.6%; however, when the moisture content decreased below 5.0%, both the seed viability and vigor significantly declined and the germination percentage fell below 20.0%. Furthermore, analysis of the seed leachate revealed that the decrease in the seed viability and vigor was associated with both increased electrical conductivity and increased concentrations of inorganic compounds such as potassium and calcium. In conclusion, the findings of this study show S. glabra seeds to possess desiccation tolerance that falls somewhere between the recalcitrant and intermediate seed types, with the observed variations depending on the degree of deterioration.
