A Chemical Analysis of Airborne Particulates at the near Coast Site, Ul-jin Geun Gyungbook

  • East Asia is characterized by anthropogenic emissions resulting from the large population and fast economic growth of this region. Since the prevailing wind is westerly and northwesterly, emissions from Ul-jin can be expected to contribute to acidic deposition increase in downwind direction. Aerosols collected at the near coast site, Uljin geun, gyungbook and were analyzed for $NH_4{^+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Cl^-$, $SO_4{^{2-}}$, and $NO_3{^-}$ from Aug. 2012 to Feb. 2013. The seasonal averaged aerosol concentration showed the highest potassium and calcium ion in winter and the highest ammonium ion due to a meadow and high solar intensity in summer. Sodium and chloride ion showed the same ratio all seasons and sulfate and nitrate species showed the maximum value in winter Chemical components of aerosols collected at the near coast site, Uljin geun, gyungbook were lower by 16 to 73% than those collected at other similar environment site such as kanghwa, yangyang. Comparing air quality data at the near coast site, Uljin geun, gyungbook, There was found that Uljin coast site is less influenced by the sea salts(potassium, magnesium, calcium) and nss-$SO_4{^{2-}}$ percentage is 3~13% higher than similar condition site.

대전지역 산성강우의 화학적 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Chemical Characteristics of Acid Rain in Taejon City)

  • From March 1990 to August 1991, every each 5mm bulk precipitation samples were collected at one residental area in Taejon City to investigate chemical characteristics of acid rain. Major ion concentrations of rain samples $(pH, SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, CL^-, NH_4^+, Na^+, K^+, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+})$ were analysed and compared with the concentration of air pollutants (T. S. P, $SO_2, NO_x$) that were measured by Ministry of Environment. The results of statistical analysis are as followings. Rain pH was relatively high on October and January and relatively low on August, November and February. Major anion is sulfate, and it's concentration is 2.36 times higher than nitrate's, and major cations are ammonium, sodium and calcium ion. Monthly variation of sulfate and calcium concentrations are higher than the others. Ion concentration and rain pH were correlated negatively with rainfall amount. Major ions in rain samples were $SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, NH_4^+, Ca^{2+}$ and regression equations are proposed by multiple regression of measured data. Also, regression equation between air pollutants(T. S. P, $SO_2$) and $SO_4^{2-}, Na^+, K^+, Ca^{2+}, Mg^{2+} ions in rain samples were made. From this wer can predict rain pH.

Effects of localised liquid fertilization of N, P, K and Ca on root development in Zoysia matrella, Cynodon dactylon and Stenotaphrum secundatum

  • Turfgrass species were evaluated for their rooting and foliar characteristics, and their interaction with the soil. The rooting system was divided into three compartments, one above another, such that the top and bottom compartments of the root system could be supplied with a nutrient deprived solution. Exposure of parts of the roots to nitrate deprivation caused a localised retardation of root initiation and extension, compared with zones receiving the full supply of nutrients. This resulted in considerable modification to root form, coupled with a significant depression in foliar growth. The extension of roots was the least affected by the deprivation of potassium. Phosphate and calcium deprivations gave rise to similar responses in root and foliar formation. Results from this study showed that external concentrations of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium are required by the root system in varying amounts for optimal growth of roots. Turfgrass coverage and turf quality ratings further reinforced these findings. No significant difference was observed between the different grasses examined here. All three species responded similarly to the deprivation of the various nutrients. Results from this study confirmed that targeted fertilization programs are beneficial and can help reduce cost, chemical usage and prevent leachate and contamination.

  • When manufacturing self-healing concrete using bacteria, nutrients are added to increase the activity of the bacteria. Although many researches have focused on the effects of nutrients containing bacterial healing agent on concrete, few have studied the effects of sole nutrient on self-healing of cement composites. Bacterial nutrients, like commercial chemical admixtures, affect hydration characteristics such as flow, setting, hydration heat, mechanical strength of cement composites and also affect the self healing of cement composites by hydration of unhydrated particles. In this study, effect of the four nutrient commonly used in the existing literature on the hydration characteristics of cement composites by its addition was investigated. Flow, setting time, hydration heat, compressive strength have studied for each nutrients added by 1.5% and 3% of cement weight. Experimental results shows that urea and calcium-nitrate can be used up to 3% without significant detrimental effect on cement composites. Addition of calcium-lactate up to 1.5% show better compressive strength than control, but addition of 3% show almost non-hydration. Yeast extract shows detrimental effects on the composites regardless of the amount added.

Desalting of papermaking tobacco sheet extract using selective electrodialysis

  • The inorganic components in tobacco sheet extract have significant influence on the sensory taste of the cigars and the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. To identify the contributions of the divalent inorganic components on harmful components delivery in cigarette smoke, a self-made selective electrodialysis was assembled with monovalent ion-selective ion exchange membranes. The influences of current density and extract content on the desalination performance were investigated. Result indicates that the majorities chloride, nitrate, and sulfate ions were removed, comparing with 50-60% of potassium and only less than 10% of magnesium and calcium ions removed in the investigated current density. The permselectivity of the tested cations across the Selemion CSO cation exchange membranes follows the order: $K^+>Ca^{2+}>Mg^{2+}$. A current density of $15mA/cm^2$ is an optional choice by considering both the energy consumption and separation efficiency. When the extract contents are in the range of 7%-20%, the removal ratios the potassium ions are kept around 60%, while the removal ratios of the calcium and magnesium ions fluctuate in the range of 16-27% and 8-14%, respectively. The tobacco smoke experiments indicated that the divalent metal ions have dual roles for the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke. The divalent potassium and calcium ions were unfavorable for the total particulate matter emission but beneficial to decrease the HCN delivery in the mainstream cigarette smoke. The selective electrodialysis is a robust technology to decrease the harmful component delivery in cigarette smoke.

Interface between calcium silicate cement and adhesive systems according to adhesive families and cement maturation

  • Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the interface between a calcium silicate cement (CSC), Biodentine and dental adhesives in terms of sealing ability. Materials and Methods: Microleakage test: 160 standardized class II cavities were prepared on 80 extracted human molars. The cavities were filled with Biodentine and then divided into 2 experimental groups according to the time of restoration: composite resin obturation 15 minutes after Biodentine handling (D0); restoration after 7 days (D7). Each group was then divided into 8 subgroups (n = 5) according to the adhesive system used: etch-and-rinse adhesive (Prime & Bond); self-etch adhesive 2 steps (Optibond XTR and Clearfil SE Bond); self-etch adhesive 1 step (Xeno III, G-aenial Bond, and Clearfil Tri-S Bond); and universal used as etch-and-rinse or self-etch (ScotchBond Universal ER or SE). After thermocycling, the teeth were immersed in a silver nitrate solution, stained, longitudinally sectioned, and the Biodentine/adhesive percolation was quantified. Scanning electron microscopic observations: Biodentine/adhesive interfaces were observed. Results: A tendency towards less microleakage was observed when Biodentine was etched (2.47%) and when restorations were done without delay (D0: 4.31%, D7: 6.78%), but this was not significant. The adhesives containing 10-methacryloyloxydecyl dihydrogen phosphate monomer showed the most stable results at both times studied. All Biodentine/adhesive interfaces were homogeneous and regular. Conclusions: The good sealing of the CSC/adhesive interface is not a function of the system adhesive family used or the cement maturation before restoration. Biodentine can be used as a dentine substitute.

호기성 그래뉼 슬러지를 이용한 RO 농축수의 생물학적 처리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Biological Treatment of RO Concentrate Using Aerobic Granular Sludge)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 RO 농축수 내 TDS 제어에 따른 고농도 질산성 질소의 효율적인 생물학적 처리에 있다. 실험실 규모의 실험에서는 연속회분식 반응기를 이용하여 연구를 수행하였으며 TDS의 주입조건에 따른 비탈질율, 비산소소비율 분석을 수행하였다. 연구결과, 연속회분식 반응기를 이용한 운전에 따라 탈질 공정 내 고농도 TDS 주입에 따라 탈질 반응이 지연되어 SDNR이 감소하는 것으로 나타났으며 미생물 활성도가 또한 감소하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 질산성 질소의 원활한 처리를 위하여 TDS 제어가 수반되어야 하며 특히, $Ca^{2+}$의 중점적인 처리가 필요할 것으로 판단된다. 또한 본 연구를 통하여 도출된 SDNR, SOUR 값은 호기성 그래뉼 슬러지를 이용한 RO 농축수의 생물학적 처리를 위한 공정 설계인자로 활용이 가능할 것으로 판단된다.

Sustained Production of Amino Acids by Immobilized Analogue- resistant Mutants of a Cyanobacterium Anacystis nidulans BD-1

  • Batch cultures of Anacystis nidulans BD-1 resistant to azaleucine and fluorotyrosine produced and liberated a wide range of amino acids, notably glutamic acid, alanine, phenylalanine, leucine, isoleucine, cysteine and methionine. Sustained liberation for prolonged periods was achieved after immobilization on calcium alginate and the net concentration in the medium was 0.18-0.2 g $I^{-1}$. While acetohydroxy acid synthase in azaleucine-resistant mutant lost leucine- and isoleucine-sensitivity, fluorotyrosine-resistant strain turned phenylalanine activating. The activities of nitrate assimilating enzymes were also higher in the mutants and were relaxed from ammonium-repression. The metabolic adjustments involved in amino acid overproduction are discussed.

강원도 고성지역에서 산불이 소나무림 토양의 영양염류에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Forest Fire on Soil Nutrients in Pine Forests in Kosong Kangwon Province)

  • Effects of forest fire on soil nutrients in pine forests were studied in Dosong, Kangwon Province in Korea. Soil samples were collected from burned sites and unburned sites (control) at Kusungri, Sampori and Wunbongri. Soil pH in burned sites was higher than that in unburned sites. Soil organic matter did not differ significantly between the burned and unburned sites. Concentrations of available phosphorus in burned soils were about 3 times higher than those in unburned sites. Also, concentrations of ammonium nitrogen were markedly increased in burned sites contrary to those of nitrate nitrogen. Total nitrogen, however, showed no significant difference between the sites. Concentrations of cations, calcium and magnesium, in burned sites were also significantly increased. Thus, even though forest fire removed the aboveground biomass of pine forests, inorganic nutrients added from ash may play a great role for growth of sprouts and seedlings after forest fire.

Optimal Culture Conditions for in vitro Propagation of Orostachys japonicus and Enhancement of Polysaccharide Production

  • Optimal culture conditions for efficient in vitro propagation and polysaccharide production of Orostachys japonicus were established. The highest growth yield was achieved in 1/2 MS medium, while the lowest growth yield was obtained in 4 MS medium. The patterns of polysaccharide formation were a little similar in all cases, but on MB5 medium, the po]ysaccharide contents of plant were higher than others. Among the modified nitrate levels, effective growth level were obtained in 1/4 N and 1/2 N. High contents of polysaccharide were obtained in 4 N. Different concentration of potassium and calcium did not improve the growth and polysaccharide production. The micropropagated shoots were successfully acclimatized artificial soils.
