  • Postlarval and juvenile anchovies Engraulis japonicus were collected using a gape net with wings in the coastal waters of Yeosu in July and August 2015, and their gut contents were analyzed. The size range of the postlarvae was 11.0-24.2 mm (notochord length) and that of the juveniles was 25.1-37.4 mm (standard length). Guts were empty in 64.5% of postlarvae and in 51.7% of juveniles. The dominant prey organisms in the guts of both postlarvae and juveniles were copepoda. Calanoida were important prey organisms for postlarvae and were dominated by nauplii of Paracalanus sp. and Calanus sp. as well as unidentified copepod naupill. Calanoida were also important in the diets of juveniles, whose gut contents were dominated by Paracalanus sp. and Cirripedia. Gut compositions were significantly different (P<0.05) among three body size levels in postlarvae and juveniles. As the body size of the postlarvae and juveniles increased, Calanoida constituted a larger proportion of the gut contents, while the proportion of copepod nauplii decreased.

  • A taxonomic study was carried out on the freshwater copepods of Order Calanoida from Korean during the period from May, 1983 to November, 1984. Materials consist of both specimens deposited at the Department of Biology, Kangreung National University and the specimens collected from various freshwater regions (excluding the subterranean waters) such as rivers, lakes, ponds, bogs, ricefields, etc. during this period. As a result of examining the specimens collected at the 26 localities in South Korea, 8 species of 3 families were identified, of which 4 species are newly known from Korea ; Sinocalanus sinensis (Poppe, 1889) ; Tropodiaptomus oryzanus Kiefer , 1937 ; Sinodiaptomus sarsi (Rylov, 1923) ; Neodiaptomus schemackeri(Poppe et Richard, 1892).

  • Several differences are revealed in the segmentation and setation of the antennule, maxillule, maxilliped and fifth legs between three genera of the family Metridinidae, Metridia, Pleuromamma, and Gaussia. The phylogenetic relationships are cladistically analyzed on the basis of 10 morphological characters. The cladogram shows that Gaussia and Pleuromamma form a sister group, with Metridia which is the first branch to diverge within the family. The presence Of quadritheks on the male antennules of Metridia and Pleuromamma seems to be an important synapomorphy. The loss of quadritheks in Gaussia represents likely evidence of a character reversal into the ancestral condition.

  • Haloptilus caribbeanensis Park, 1970 (Copepoda, Calanoida, Augaptilidae) is redescribed in detail on the basis of an adult female collected from Suruga Bay, Japan. This is the first record of the species from the Indo-Pacific region. Morphology of the Pacific specimen agrees well with that of the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico specimens, except for the numbers of mandibular teeth. The former has five teeth and the latter six teeth on mandible. The segmentation and segmental aesthetasc numbers of female antennules of H. caribbeanensis are compared with those of five species of Haloptilus (H. angusticeps, H. fons, H. longicomis, H. ornatus and H. spiniceps). These characters show morphological differentiation at the species level. H. caribbeanensis has no aesthetasc on the proximal segments II, IV, and VI of the female antennules.

  • Three aetideid copepods collected from the East Sea of Korea are described: Bradyidius angustus (Tanaka, 1957), Gaetanus minutus (Sars, 1907), and Aetideus acutus Farran, 1929. The former two species are new to the Korean copepod fauna. The sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 were determined to be the molecular characteristics of these three species.
