In last study, Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) was conducted for cadmium content of 295 rice varieties including 137 rice core set and 157 Korea breeding varieties collected from Kongju National University. The results showed that 9 varieties had SNP allele and amino acid substitution in exon of chromosome 1. This study was aim to understanding mechanism of cadmium uptake to confirm correlation of cadmium and other mineral nutrients (Cu, Mn, Fe) among 9 rice varieties. Nine varieties were planted on polluted soil of mine in Korea and cadmium content in root, stem, leaf and it's brown rice was analyzed by ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass spectrometer, Agilent 7700E, US). Results of this study showed that mechanism for cadmium uptake and accumulation was diversity among varieties. Chin-nong and Ho-nong contained higher levels of cadmium in root, but contained relatively lower levels cadmium in brown rice than other varieties. Cheong-nam, Nam-pyeong, Gan-cheok, Suan absorbed high levels of cadmium through root and then accumulated high cadmium to brown rice. Meanwhile, Yeong-deok and Su-kwang absorbed lower cadmium in root, but high cadmium was accumulated in brown rice. Correlations between cadmium and other mineral nutrients (Cu, Mn, Fe) were analyzed by using SPSS statistics 20. The contents of iron in leaf had minus correlation (p<0.05) with cooper and cadmium in root, cadmium in brown rice. Therefore understanding of cadmium uptake mechanism among varieties will be used to basic data for further breeding and phytoremediation.

Histopathological changes and cadmium accumulations in the gills were investigated in crucian carp(Carassius auratus) exposed to 0, 0.01, 0.1, 0.5mg/$\ell$ cadmium(Cd) concentrations for 25 days. After 25 days of exposure, cadmium accumulations increased in each of the different exposure concentrations.(omitted)
Over-expression of a copper/zinc superoxide dismutase (Cu/ZnSOD) resulted in substantially increased tolerance to cadmium exposure in Arabidopsis thaliana. Lower lipid peroxidation and $H_2O_2$ accumulation and the higher activities of $H_2O_2$ scavenging enzymes, including catalase (CAT) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) in transformants (CuZnSOD-tr) compared to untransformed controls (wt) indicated that oxidative stress was the key factor in cadmium tolerance. Although progressive reductions in the dark-adapted photochemical efficiency (Fv/Fm) and quantum efficiency yield were observed with increasing cadmium levels, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters were less marked in CuZnSOD-tr than in wi. These observations indicate that oxidative stress in the photosynthetic apparatus is a principal cause of Cd-induced phytotoxicity, and that Cu/ZnSOD plays a critical role in protection against Cd-induced oxidative stress.
The concentrations of cadmium, metallothionein(MT), superoxide dismutase(SOD), and lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) were investigated in liver and kidney of rats which were fed the water containing 100 ppm cadmium chloride with basal diet and 5% Agaricus bisporus diet during 16 weeks. Cadmium concentrations in liver and kidney increased during 16 weeks, and there were significantly higher accumulation of cadmium in the kidney than in the liver. The concentrations of MTs in liver and kidney decreased linearly during 16 weeks, but there was no significant difference between control and experimental group. MT concentrations of liver were significantly higher than those of kidney. The superoxide dismutase activities and lactate dehydrogenase activities were not affected by the diet, but there was a significant difference by the duration of administration. These data indicate that the kidney is a major target organ of chronic cadmium poisoning, and suggest that Cd-induced hepatic injury, via release of Cd-MT, may play an important role in the nephrotoxicity. In conclusion, induction of MT occurs in both the liver and the kidney after administration of $CdCl_2$. However, the kidney is less responsive than the liver to the induction of MT by cadmium, which may contribute to making the kidney the target organ of toxicity during chronic Cd exposure.
This study was carried out in order to clarify the combined effect of cadmium and lead on rat bones when exposed to single metal (1 mg cd/kg body weight) and cambined metals (1 mg cd + 4 mg pb/kg body weight). Seventy five mature rats of Sprague-Dawley species were divided into a control group and a treatment group that were administered by daily peritoneum injection for 7 to 9 weeds, and their body weights were measured every week. The results were summarized as follows 1. Body weight gains of the combined injection group and the single injection groups were lower than that of the control group. 2. In case of the combined injection group, the amount of cadmium accumulated in femur was more than that of the cadmium group. These amounts of cadmium accumulated showed an increasing trend. 3. The lead amount in bone tissue of the combined injection group presented also an increasing trend. In this case, the additive action of cadmium to the lead accumulation in bone tissue was conspicuous. 4. The amounts of calcium and phosphorus in femur showed clear a decreasing trend in the cadmium group and combined administration group. The ratio of calcium and phosphorus (ca/p) in the cadmium group was not different from that of the control group, but in the combined injection group the ratio was a little lower.
Since the Industrial Revolution, people have enjoyed an abundant life, owing to the technological innovations of science. However, because of changes in the environment or polution to the environment, it has brought on many chronic diseases. Especially, even though it may be a small amount, if cadmium gets into a human body, because its biological half life is long, it fatally causes a kidney disease and damage to human organisms. It was reported that Metallothioneins(MT), a substance that is closely related with a free radical that comes from environmental pollution and the course of which cadmium, which causes chronic addition in the body, is formed, along with harmful metals, make the toxicity reduce. MT compound led into the body by cadmium indirectly functions as an antioxidation, supplied adequate amount of vitamin E, and suppresses the accumulation of cadmium in heart, liver and blood. Cadmium content found in Korean soil according to the test conducted from 1992 to 1996 was 0.02~0.03mg/kg in cereals, pulses, and potatoes. Free radical scavenger, finding solution for metal substance that comes from environmental pollution from food and natural substances implicates a better future for the study of food science.
It has been suggested that calcium is only one of many metals that compete with toxic metals in the body. Therefore, this study was carried out to determine the influence of water hardness on accumulation of heavy metals in rats. The seventy-five rats were divided into control and case groups. Case group was subdivided into four subgroups in proportion to the concentration of water hardness respectively, such as, 0, 250, 500, 1000ppm. Control group was fed on only deionized water, but case groups were fed on hard water with ionized heavy metals (Cd 150mg + Pb 300mg + Cu 300mg/l) for 20, 40, 60 days. The concentrations of cadmium, lead and copper were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry (Perkin Elmer 2380) in livers and kidneys. The results of the study are summarized as following 1. The concentration of cadmium accumulation showed the tendency of decrease in proportion to water hardness in both livers and kidneys of rats having been fed for only 60 days, respectively. 2. In only livers of rats having been fed for 60 days, essential metal, copper had the tendency of decrease according as hardness in water. 3. It was impossible to compare case with control about the tendency of lead accumulation because there was no difference between the two in livers and kidneys respectively.
Experiments were carried out to investigate Cd accumulation, elimination and cell response in juvenile rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli) exposed to sub-chronic dietary Cd (0, 0.5, 5, 25 and 125 mg/kg) for 60 days and depuration periods of 30 days. Cd accumulation in the kidney of cock fish increased with exposure periods and concentrations for the 60 days of dietary Cd exposure. After the end of the dietary Cd exposure, Cd accumulation values in the kidney were $52.9{\pm}9.94\;{\mu}g/g$ and $90.6{\pm}15.7\;{\mu}g/g$ for those exposed to 25 mg/kg and 125 mg/kg Cd, respectively. The accumulation factors increased with the exposure period in the kidney. Cd elimination in the kidney of rockfish did not vary significantly and remained constant after the cessation of the dietary Cd exposure. In the primary exposure periods, the effect of kidney tissue in the rockfish exposed to dietary Cd was observed the swelling of capillary of the glomerulus. In addition, there was also hydropic swelling within the pyknotic nuclei, some of hyaline droplet accumulation and the microvilli showed a positive reaction to alcian blue in the tubular cells. While exposure time and concentrations were increased, there was a lot of hyaline droplet accumulation and the microvilli showed a positive reaction to alcian blue in the tubular cells. Fused renal tubule and its necrosis were observed after 60 days at l25 mg/kg.

Cadmium (Cd) toxicity is a serious limitation for agricultural production. In this study, we explored tolerance mechanism associated with Cd toxicity tolerance in alfalfa plants. We used three distinct alfalfa cultivars M. sativa cv. Vernal, M. sativa cv. Zhung Mu, and M. sativa cv. Xing Jiang Daye in this study. Cd showed declined chlorophyll score in Xing Jiang Daye compared with Zhung Mu and Vernal. No significant change observed among the cultivars for root and shoot length. Atomic absorption spectroscopy analysis demonstrated a significant accumulation of Cd, Fe, S and PC in distinct alfalfa cultivars. However, Zhung Mu and Xing Jiang Daye declined Cd accumulation in root, where Fe, S and PC incremented only in Zhung Mu. It suggests that excess Cd in Zhung Mu possibly inhibited in root by the increased accumulation of Fe, S and PC. This was further confirmed by the response of Fe (MsIRT1) and S transporters (MsSULTR1;2 and MsSULTR1;3), and MsPCS1 genes associated with Fe, S and PC availability and translocation in roots and shoots. It suggests that specially the transcript signal inducing the responses to adjust Cd especially in Zhung Mu. This finding provides the essential background for further molecular breeding program for forage crops.
Restoration of contaminated soils to an environmentally acceptable condition is important. One of the newer techniques in soil remediation is a method based on electrokinetic phenomena in soils. The technology uses electricity to affect chemical concentrations and water flow through the pores of soils. An important advantage of electrokinetic soil remediation over other in-situ processes such as soil flushing is the capability of control over the movement of the contaminants. Because the migration of the contaminants is confined by the electric field, there is little dispersion outside the treatment zone. Furthermore, the process is effective for soils with low and variable permeability. In the present study, the distributions of cadmium in the electrokinetic processing of kaolinite under the condition of constant applied voltage are investigated. Cadmium accumulates near the cathode without reducing the diffusion of hydroxide ion into the soil. In keeping the catholyte pH at neutrality, cadmium migrates toward the cathode without any accumulation of cadmium near the cathode and is successfully removed at the cathode reservoir. It was also found that the progress of electrokinetic processing of cadmium could be gasped to a certain extent by monitoring the local voltage and the current density.
