NUMA systems have remote access caches(RAC) in each local node to reduce the overhead for repeated remote memory accesses. By this RAC, memory latency and network traffic can be reduced and the performance of the multiprocessor system can be improved. Until now, several cache replacement policies have been proposed in recent years, and there also is cache replacement policy for multiprocessor systems. In this paper, we propose a cache replacement policy which is based on cache line coherence information. In this policy, the cache line that does not have an ownership is replaced first with respect to cache line that has an ownership. Like this way, the overhead to transfer ownership is avoided and the memory latency can be decreased. We also propose “Keeping-Ownership replacement policy with MRU (KOM)” and “Keeping-Ownership replacement policy with Reference Bit(KORB)” to reduce the frequent replacement penalty of the ownership-lacking cache line. We compare and analyze these with LRU and Pseudo LRU(PLRU). The simulation shows that KOM outperforms the PLRU by 25%, and KORB outperforms the PLRU by 13%. Although the hardware cost of KOM is very small, the performance of KOM is nearly equal to that of the LRU.

In this paper, we present MI-MESI write-invalidate snooping cache coherence protocol which addresses several significant drawbacks of MESI and MI-MESI write -invalidate snooping cache coherence protocols under the split transaction bus based multiprocessor environment. In this protocol, each cache block maintains one of six cache states which represent Modified-shared, Invalid-by-other, Modified, Exclusive, Shared and Invalid states. By using these cache states, our protocol reduces both the access contention and unnecessary updates for the memory modules significantly, and thus providing the fast memory access time.
Flash memory has many good features such as small size, shock-resistance, and low power consumption, but the cost of flash memory is still high to substitute for hard disk entirely. Recently, some mobile devices, such as laptops, attempt to use both flash memory and hard disk together for taking advantages of merits of them. However, existing OSs (Operating Systems) are not optimized to use the heterogeneous storage media. This paper presents a new buffer cache management scheme. First, we allocate buffer cache space according to access patterns of block references and the characteristics of storage media. Second, we prefetch data blocks selectively according to the location of them and access patterns of them. Third, we moves destaged data from buffer cache to hard disk or flash memory considering the access patterns of block references. Trace-driven simulation shows that the proposed schemes enhance the buffer cache hit ratio by up to 29.9% and reduce the total I/O elapsed time by up to 49.5%.
Recently, NAND flash memory is used not only for portable devices, but also for personal computers and server computers. Buffer cache replacement policies for the hard disks such as LRU and LFU are not good for NAND flash memories because they do not consider about the characteristics of NAND flash memory. CFLRU and its variants, CFLRU/C, CFLRU/E and DL-CFLRU/E(CFLRUs) are the buffer cache replacement policies considered about the characteristics of NAND flash memories, but their performances are not better than those of LRD. In this paper, we propose a new buffer cache replacement policy for NAND flash memory. Which is based on LFU and is taking into account the characteristics of NAND flash memory. And we estimate the performance of hit ratio and flush operation numbers. The proposed policy shows better hit ratio and the number of flush operation than any other policies.

Mobile devices employ buffer cache mechanisms, just as in computer systems such as desktops or servers, to mitigate the performance gap between main memory and secondary storage. However, DRAM has a problem in that it accelerates battery consumption by performing refresh operations periodically to maintain the stored data. In this paper, we propose a novel buffer cache scheme to increase the battery lifecycle in mobile devices based on a hybrid main memory architecture consisting of DRAM and non-volatile PCM. We also suggest a new buffer cache policy that allocates buffers based on process states to optimize the performance and endurance of PCM. In particular, our algorithm allocates each page to the appropriate position corresponding to the state of the application that owns the page, and tries to ensure a rapid response of foreground applications even with a small amount of DRAM memory. The experimental results indicate that the proposed scheme reduces the elapsed time of foreground applications by 58% on average and power consumption by 23% on average without negatively impacting the performance of background applications.

In this paper we have designed and implemented a method of using extended memory and hard disk space as a data buffer for application programs to allow handling of large data files in DOS environment. We use a part of the conventional DOS memory as a buffer cache which allows the application program to use extended memory and hard disks transparently. Using buffer cache also allows some speed improvement for the application program. We have also implemented a number of functions to allow easier handling of pointer operations used by application programs.
High-potential data can be predicted and stored in the cache to prevent cache misses, thus reducing the processor's request and wait times. As a result, the processor can work non-stop, hiding memory latency. By utilizing the temporal/spatial locality of memory access, the prefetcher introduced to improve the performance of these computers predicts the following memory address will be accessed. We propose a prefetcher that applies the GRU model, which is advantageous for handling time series data. Display the currently accessed address in binary and use it as training data to train the Gated Recurrent Unit model based on the difference (delta) between consecutive memory accesses. Finally, using a GRU model with learned memory access patterns, the proposed data prefetcher predicts the memory address to be accessed next. We have compared the model with the multi-layer perceptron, but our prefetcher showed better results than the Multi-Layer Perceptron.
The desire to access data faster and the growth of next-generation memories such as non-volatile memories, contribute to the development of research on memory file systems. It is recommended that memory mapped file I/O, which has less overhead than read-write I/O, is utilized in a high-performance memory file system. Memory mapped file I/O, however, brings a page table overhead, which becomes one of the big overheads that needs to be resolved in the entire file I/O performance. We find that same overheads occur unnecessarily, because a page table of a file is removed whenever a file is opened after being closed. To remove the duplicated overhead, we propose the mapping cache, a technique that does not delete a page table of a file but saves the page table to be reused when the mapping of the file is released. We demonstrate that mapping cache improves the performance of traditional file I/O by 2.8x and web server performance by 12%.
The most significant difference of embedded systems from general purpose systems is that embedded systems are allowed to use only limited resources including battery and memory. Especially, the number of applications increases which deal with multimedia data. In those systems with high data computations, the delay of memory access is one of the major bottlenecks hurting the system performance. As a result, many researchers have investigated various techniques to reduce the memory access cost. Most programs generally have locality in memory references. Temporal locality of references means that a resource accessed at one point will be used again in the near future. Spatial locality of references is that likelihood of using a resource gets higher if resources near it were just accessed. The latest embedded processors usually adapt cache memory to exploit these two types of localities. Processors access faster cache memory than off-chip memory, reducing the latency. In this paper we will propose the enhanced dynamic allocation technique for structure-type data in order to eliminate unused memory space and to reduce both the cache miss rate and the application execution time. The proposed approach aggregates fields from multiple records dynamically allocated and consecutively remaps them on the memory space. Experiments on Olden benchmarks show $13.9\%$ L1 cache miss rate drop and $15.9\%$ L2 cache miss drop on average, compared to the previously proposed techniques. We also find execution time reduced by $10.9\%$ on average, compared to the previous work.

Caches in a multiprocessing environment introduce the cache coherence problem. When multiple processors maintain locally cached copies of a unique shared-memory location, any local modification of the location can result in a globally inconsistent view of memory. Cache coherence protocols are important to operate a shared-memory multiprocessor system with efficiency and correctness. Since random testing and simulations are not enough to validate correctness of protocols, it is necessary to develop efficient and reliable verification methods. In this appear we present our experience in using VIS (Verification Interacting with Synthesis), a tool of formal method, to analyze a number of property of a cache coherence protocol, RACE (Remote Access Cache coherent Enforcement).
