  • Growth, nutrient uptake and photosynthesis as affected by submersion of shoot in pickerel weed (Monochoria vaginalis Presl.) were determined. The shoots of pickerel weeds in hydroponic culture were subjected to the submerged or emerged condition at 3- or 5-leaf stage for 8 or 10 days. Under submerged condition, growth in plant height was enhanced, but leaf number, leaf area, fresh and dry weight were reduced compared to those under the emerged condition. Similar responses in growth to submergence were obtained with the pickerel weeds rooted in the soil. Under submergence, chlorophyll content increased during the first 2 days, but thereafter remarkably decreased at 3-leaf stage and after the first 4 days at 5-leaf stage. Compared to the emerged condition, uptakes of $NH_4\;^+$-N, $NO_3\;^-$-N, $P_2O_5$ and $K^+$ were reduced, but uptakes of $Ca^{++}$ and $Mg^{++}$ increased under the submerged condition. Photosynthetic rate of shoot under water, measured by $CO_2$electrode, showed the maximum by 210 ${\mu}$moles $HCO_3\;^-$/g F.W. at the 8th day after submergence(DAS) at 3-leaf stage and 320 ${\mu}$moles $HCO_3\;^-$/g F. W. at 6 DAS at 5-leaf stage. These results indicate that pickerel weeds grow much better when the shoot is air-exposed and are less tolerable to submergence at 3 leaf-stage than at 5-leaf stage.

  • The adsorbent used in water-adsorption cooling system utilizing low-temperature heat of below $90^{\circ}C$ is required to exhibit high water uptake capacity at a relative humidity ($P/P_0$) between 0.1 and 0.3. Mesoporous silica (MCM-41) and MOF(MIL-101) exhibit quite large water adsorption capacity under saturated water vapor at $35^{\circ}C$. However, these adsorbents show small water adsorption capacity ($0.027{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$, $0.074{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$, respectively) in the relative humidity ($P/P_0$) range of 0.1 to 0.3. In this study, the surface properties of mesoporous silica and MOF were modified by simple methods to develop an adsorbent having a higher water uptake than the conventional water adsorbents at a relative humidity ($P/P_0$) of 0.1 ~ 0.3. In the case of mesoporous silica (MCM-41) exhibiting mainly water adsorption at $P/P_0=0.5{\sim}0.7$, aluminum species was functionalized on the mesopore walls and then cations existing near the aluminum were exchanged with various cations (e.g., $Na^+$, ${NH_4}^+$, and $(C_2H_5)_4N^+$). In addition, 20 wt% (to total weight of the composites) of hygroscopic inorganic salt ($CaCl_2$) was impregnated on the MCM-41. In the case of the MIL-101 (MOF), 20 wt% of hygroscopic inorganic salt ($CaCl_2$) was impregnated on the MIL-101. The MCM-41 which was ion-exchanged with various cations has main adsorption branch around 0.5 of $P/P_0$ which was slightly shifted with low-pressure direction in comparison with pristine MCM-41. However, tiny increases were observed on the adsorption in the range of $P/P_0$ between 0.1 and 0.3. After salt impregnation on the MCM-41, the adsorption capacity under $P/P_0=0.1{\sim}0.3$ at $35^{\circ}C$ was increased from $0.027{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$ to $0.152{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$. In the case of MIL-101, the amount of water adsorption at $35^{\circ}C$ under $P/P_0=0.1{\sim}0.3$ was increased from $0.074{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$ to $0.330{g_{water}\;g_{ads}}^{-1}$ after the salt impregnation.

  • Effects of lime and inoculation on dry matter yield and nutrient contents of three alfalfa varieties (Medicago sativa L. var. Moapa, Washoe and Lahontan) were investigated with pot culture using Red-yellow sandy loam soil (pH 4.9, from Ryogi hill) 1. In no lime plot germination was poor and harvest was nil, but Moapa was stronger than others. 2. Dry matter yield in uninoculation plot was Moapa>Washoe>Lahontan and effect of inoculation was reverse but nodule development was not clear by inoculation. 3. Dry matter yield in uninoculated plot tends to increase with cutting but effect of inoculation to decrease and the same in nitrogen content in herbage. 4. Moapa was higher in the content of N, Ca, Mg and lower in P, K than Washoe and Lahontan. 5. Washoe was higer in K and Mg and lower in P and Ca than Lahontan. 6. The content of microelements (Fe, Mn and Zn) tends to increase by inoculation and the content of P and K decreased with cutting. 7. High yielding capacity of Moapa seems to be attributable to strong absorption power of N, Ca, Mg and low requirement of P,K.

  • BACKGROUND: To determine effect of phosphate (P) application on Cadmium (Cd) extractability and its uptake by rice plant in Cd contaminated paddy soil, dipotassium ($K_2HPO_4$) which was the most effective of P materials to decrease Cd extractability in previous study was selected as P fertilizer. METHODS AND RESULTS: Dipotassium phosphate was applied at the rates of 0, 78, 234, and 390 kg $P_2O_5/ha$, and then rice was cultivated in submerged paddy soil from Jun. to Oct. in 2015. Cadmium concentrations in grain, straw, and root of rice plant decreased significantly with increasing application rate of $K_2HPO_4$. The trend of 1 M $NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration in soil was similar to that of Cd uptake by rice plant. One M $NH_4OAc$ extractable Cd concentration was negatively related to soil pH and negative charge. Alleviation of Cd phytoavailability of rice in paddy soil might be attributed to increase in pH and negative charge of soil. Using a quadratic response model, amount of grain yield were related to $K_2HPO_4$ application rates as Grain yield = $5.38+2.39{\times}10^{-3}K_2HPO_4-6.65{\times}10^{-6}K_2HPO{_4}^2$ (model $R^2=0.968$). Using this equations, the greatest grain yield (5.6 Mg/ha) was at the rate of 180 kg $P_2O_5/ha$. At this application rate of P, the Cd concentration in grain was 0.53 mg/kg, implying ca. 23% lower than the control. CONCLUSION: From the view point of heavy metal safety and crop productivity, it might be good P management to apply P fertilizer with 4 times higher rate than recommendation (45 kg/ha).

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the nutrition absorption pattern in the growth stages and develope the optimal nutrient solution hydroponically grown the tomato in closed substrate culture system with the nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan into 1/2S, 1 S, and 2S. When plant was grown in 1/2 S, the growth and yield were high and the pH and EC in the rooting zone were stable. Suitable composition of nutrient solution for tomato was $NO_3-N$ 7.1, $PO_{4}$-P 2.1, K 4.0, Ca 3.1, Mg 1.2, and $SO_{4}-S\;1.2\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in the early growth stage and $NO_3-N$ 6.5, $PO_4-P$ 2.3, K 3.4, Ca 3.1, Mg 1.1, and $SO_4-S\;1.1\;me{\cdot}L^{-1}$ in the late growth stage by calculating a rate of nutrient and water uptake. To estimate the suitability for the nutrient solution of tomato in a development of optimum nutrient solution of tomato developed by Wonkwang university in korea (WU), plant was grown in perlite substrate supplied with different solution and strengths(S) by research station for greenhouse vegetable and floricultuin in the Netherlands (Proefstation voor tuinbouw onder glas te Naaldwijk; PTG) of 1/2 S, 1 S and 2 S, respectively, The growth was good at the PTG and WU of 2 S in early growth stage, and at the WU 2S in late growth stage. The highest yield of tomato obtained in the WU of 2 S, although blossom-end rot was appeared in all treatments. pH and EC in root zone of WU of 2 S were stable during the early and late growth stage. Therefore when plant was grown in WU of 2 S, N and P content in the nutrient solution need to low, according N and P content of their leaves were high in WU of 2 S.

  • A pot experiment was conducted to study the influence of potassium and cesium carrier on the uptake of radionuclide $Cs^{137}$ which is an element released usually from nuclear facilities, by paddy rice upon prolonged cropping of contaminated soils. The results are summarized as follows: 1) Visual toxic symptoms on the growth of rice plant due to treatment of radioactive cesium were not observed up to $20 {\mu}Ci/10Kg$ soil in a pot. 2) The yield and potassium content in rice plant were increased with potassium application, while the reverse was true for the calcium and magnesium. The addition of potassium to the soil markedly reduced $Cs^{137}$ uptake by rice plant but the addition of Cs carrier increased $Cs^{137}$ uptake. 3) Potassium and $Cs^{137}$ showed uniform distribution in all parts of plant and the contents of these two elements were high in the stems and leaves, and low in the heads. The ratio of $Cs^{137}$ to K was, however, not uniform in all parts of a plant. It was shown that this ratio was higher in the seed part, that is, chaff and hulled grain than in the leaves and stems. 4) $Cs^{137}$ absorption rate in rice plant was remarkably reduced with increase of potassium application and it was ranged from $0.02{\sim}0.47%$ in potassium non-treated plot to 0.01∼0.04% in plot treated with a concentration of 16Kg/10a. 5) The amount of $Cs^{137}$ and potassium uptake of rice plant depended on soil type. Uptake of $Cs^{137}$ by rice plant was higher in the soil with low pH and potassium content. The $Cs^{137}$ uptake by rice plant decreased as the potassium content and pH of soil was increased, but $Cs^{137}$ uptake increased when CEC and clay content in soil was high.

  • Experiments were carried out to develop an optimal nutrient solution for the single-stemmed rose (Rosa hybrida L.) 'Red velvet' in a closed aeroponic system. Plants were grown in 1/3, 1/2, 1, or 3/2 strength of the nutrient solution of National Horticultural Research Station in Japan (NHRS). Significantly less changes of pH and EC ($dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$) in the drainage were observed in 1/2 strength treatment as compared to other treatments. The $NO_3-N$, K, Ca, and Mg concentrations in the drainage solution of 1/2 strength treatment were maintained at optimal levels. These results indicated that the rose uptakes of both nutrients and water was more stable than those in other concentration. The concentration of macronutrients in nutrient solution were adjusted based on the ratio of nutrient:water (n/w) taken up by plants grown in the 1/2 strength solution. The composition of the new solution (classified the University of Seoul (UOS) solution) was as follow; $NO_3-N$ 8.8, $NH_4-N$ 0.67, P 2.0, K 4.8, Ca 4.0, Mg 2.0 $me{\cdot}L^{-1}$. To further evaluate new solution on crop growth, the rose 'Red Velvet' was grown again in l/2, 1, and 2 strength UOS solution to compare with 1.0 strength PBG (proefstion voor bloemisterij en glasgroenpe) solution. Overall the plant growth, including the stem length and number of five-leaflet leaves was higher in 1.0 strength of UOS solution than other treatments. Results presented in this study indicate that the nutrients in the UOS solution are well balanced for the single-stemmed rose in the closed aeroponic system.

  • The physiological and biochemical role of potassium for upland crops according to recent research reports and the nutritional status of potassium in Korea were reviewed. Since physical and chemical characteristics of potassium ion are different from those of sodium, potassium can not completely be replaced by sodium and replacement must be limited to minimum possible functional area. Specific roles of potassium seem to keep fine structure of biological membranes such as thylacoid membrane of chloroplast in the most efficient form and to be allosteric effector and conformation controller of various enzymes principally in carbohydrate and protein metabolism. Potassium is essential to improve the efficiency of phoro- and oxidative- phosphorylation and involve deeply in all energy required metabolisms especially synthesis of organic matter and their translocation. Potassium has many important, physiological functions such as maintenance of osmotic pressure and optimum hydration of cell colloids, consequently uptake and translocation of water resulting in higher water use efficiency and of better subcellular environment for various physiological and biochemical activities. Potassium affects uptake and translocation of mineral nutrients and quality of products. potassium itself in products may become a quality criteria due to potassium essentiality for human beings. Potassium uptake is greatly decreased by low temperature and controlled by unknown feed back mechanism of potassium in plants. Thus the luxury absorption should be reconsidered. Total potassium content of upland soil in Korea is about 3% but the exchangeable one is about 0.3 me/100g soil. All upland crops require much potassium probably due to freezing and cold weather and also due to wet damage and drought caused by uneven rainfall pattern. In barley, potassium should be high at just before freezing and just after thawing and move into grain from heading for higher yield. Use efficiency of potassium was 27% for barley and 58% in old uplands, 46% in newly opened hilly lands for soybean. Soybean plant showed potassium deficiency symptom in various fields especially in newly opened hilly lands. Potassium criteria for normal growth appear 2% $K_2O$ and 1.0 K/(Ca+Mg) (content ratio) at flower bud initiation stage for soybean. Potassium requirement in plant was high in carrot, egg plant, chinese cabbage, red pepper, raddish and tomato. Potassium content in leaves was significantly correlated with yield in chinese cabbage. Sweet potato. greatly absorbed potassium subsequently affected potassium nutrition of the following crop. In the case of potassium deficiency, root showed the greatest difference in potassium content from that of normal indicating that deficiency damages root first. Potatoes and corn showed much higher potassium content in comparison with calcium and magnesium. Forage crops from ranges showed relatively high potassium content which was significantly and positively correlated with nitrogen, phosphorus and calcium content. Percentage of orchards (apple, pear, peach, grape, and orange) insufficient in potassium ranged from 16 to 25. The leaves and soils from the good apple and pear orchards showed higher potassium content than those from the poor ones. Critical ratio of $K_2O/(CaO+MgO)$ in mulberry leaves to escape from winter death of branch tip was 0.95. In the multiple croping system, exchangeable potassium in soils after one crop was affected by the previous crops and potassium uptake seemed to be related with soil organic matter providing soil moisture and aeration. Thus, the long term and quantitative investigation of various forms of potassium including total one are needed in relation to soil, weather and croping system. Potassium uptake and efficiency may be increased by topdressing, deep placement, slow-releasing or granular fertilizer application with the consideration of rainfall pattern. In all researches for nutritional explanation including potassium of crop yield reasonable and practicable nutritional indices will most easily be obtained through multifactor analysis.

  • Calcium promoted ethylene production from mungbean hypocotyl segments incubated in the presence of either auxin or cytokinin (kinetin). Time course studies indicated that the calcium effect on ethylene production had a longer latent period (about 6 h) in combination with kinetin than with auxin. Studies on the effects of agents that are known to interfere with either action or transport (uptake) of calcium on ethylene biosynthesis indicated different patterns between auxin- and kinetin-treated tissues. Auxin-induced ethylene production was inhibited by the calmodulin inhibitor, trifluoperazine (TFP), and this inhibition was overcome by high concentrations of calcium applied, but TFP had no significant effect on kinetin-induced ethylene production regardless of calcium in the medium. The calcium channel blocker, verapamil, inhibited auxin-induced, but had little effect on kinetin-induced, ethylene producton. In vivo activity of "ethylene forming enzyme (EFE)" was found to be substantially promoted by calcium treatment. The enzyme activity was further increased by kinetin when segments were simultaneously treated with calcium, but auxin did not have such an effect.an effect.
