  • Plate-type phosphor is a promising substitute in overcoming the issues related to the powder phosphor paste mixed with resin. In this research, $Ca-{\alpha}-SiAlON:Eu^{2+}$ plate phosphor ($Ca_xSi_{12-(m+n)}Al_{m+n}O_nN_{16-n}:Eu_y$) was investigated for the varied compositions (m,n) of the host crystal with the fixed Eu content (y). Densification was promoted for the compositions with increasing 'm' values for the m=2n relationship. Dictated by the Eu concentration inside the phosphor crystal, photoluminescence intensity was stronger in ${\alpha}2$ specimen (m = 3.0, n = 1.5) containing the second phases when compared to ${\alpha}1$ specimen (m = 1.5, n = 0.75) comprising a single-phase ${\alpha}$-SiAlON. The concentration of Eu in the non-emitting amorphous interfacial glass phase was 2~4 times of the designed Eu concentration inside the ${\alpha}$-SiAlON crystal.

  • The effect of metal oxides($K_2O, MgO, CaO,Al_2O_3$, and $TiO_2$) on the kinds of pure $SiO_2$ phase, and $SiO_2$ phases in the composition of vitreous porcelain body was investigated. Also, the effect of the ratio $SiO_2$ to $Al_2O_3$ in the composition of porcelain body with stabilized of cristobalite phase was investigated. In the case of the addition of $K_2O, MgO, CaO, Al_2O_3$, and $TiO_2$ to pure $SiO_2$, the major phase was $\alpha$-cristobalite, $\alpha$-cristobalite, $\alpha$-quartz, $\alpha$-quartz and amorphous, respectively. As the ratio of $SiO_2$ to $Al_2O_3$ in the composition of porcelain body was decreased, the stabilization of cristobalite phase was promoted and only the critical value of $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio that stabilizing the cristobalite phase in it was 68.10/22.75. The addition of $K_2$O, MgO, CaO,Al_2O_3$, and $TiO_2$ to the composition of porcelain body stabilized already did not affect on the formation of $\alpha$-cristobalite phase which degraded the thermal properties of porcelain body, and suppressed the formation of a, $\beta$-cristobalite.

  • Oxynitride green phosphors for white light emitting diodes (LEDs) were synthesized and their optical properties were evaluated. The N/O ratio ($\delta$) of $SrSi_2O_{2-{\delta}}N_{2+2/3{\delta}}:Eu^{2+}$ closely depended on the synthesizing conditions. The most excellent green emission (545 nm), which was assigned to the $5d{\rightarrow}4f$ transition of $Eu^{2+}$ ions, was achieved at the conditions of $1700^{\circ}C$, 5 mol% $Eu^{2+}$, and $H_2$ atmosphere. The well-developed $Ca-{\alpha}-SiAlON:Yb^{2+}$ particles with homogeneous size were obtained at m = 3 (n = 0.15) for the compound of $Ca_{0.5m-0.005}Yb_{0.005}Si_{12-(m+n)}Al_{m+n}O_nN_{16-n}$, resulting in the strong green emission at around 550 nm.

  • The effect of minor element additions (Ca, Al) on microstructural change and magnetic properties of Fe-Nb-Cu-Si-B alloy has been investigated, in this paper. The Fe-Si-B-Nb-Cu(-Ca-Al) alloys were prepared by arc melting in argon gas atmosphere. The alloy ribbons were fabricated by melt-spinning, and heat-treated under a nitrogen atmosphere at $520-570^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The soft magnetic properties of the ribbon core were analyzed using the AC B-H meter. A differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to examine the crystallization behavior of the amorphous alloy ribbon. The microstructure was observed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The addition of Ca increased the electrical resistivity to reduce the eddy current loss. And the addition of Al decreased the intrinsic magnetocrystalline anisotropy $K_1$ resulting in the increased permeability. The reduction in the size of the ${\alpha}$-Fe precipitates was observed in the alloys containing of Ca and Al. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the additions of Ca and Al notably improved the soft magnetic properties such as permeability, coercivity and core loss in the Fe-Nb-Cu-Si-B base nanocrystalline alloys.

  • This study was carried out to research the change of mineral phases and the characteristics (apparent specific gravity, water absorption, firing shrinkage and thermal expansion etc) of the sintered bodies composed of larnite, wollastonite and anorthite etc. in $CaO-Al_2O_3-SiO_2$ system. Test bodies were composed of the same theoretical composition as it of anorthite and fired up to $1450^{\circ}C$. Investigated the change and micro-structure of the mineral phases by XRD and SEM, the characteristics of the sintered bodies by DTA/TGA and etc. The results were as follows. 1. The sintering temperature had a higher about $60^{\circ}C$ than that of $CaO-SiO_2$ system because of coexisting $Al_2O_3$. 2. The formation and transition temperature of $\beta$-wol lastonite and $\alpha$-wollastonite were similar to the results of $CaO-SiO_2$ system. 3. The formed larnite and wollastonite were decomposed and melted at about $1260^{\circ}C$. 4. Anorthite began to be synthesized at $1140^{\circ}C$, its quantity was repidly increased according to the temperature rising.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of process parameter on alpha-case formation of Ti and TiAl castings. The previous studies showed that the molten titanium is excessively reactive to the refractory oxide mold, resulting in alpha-caes of the titanium castings regardless of composition of titanium alloys. However, the behavior of the alpha-case formation of TiAl alloy is not consistent with conventional titanium alloy. In order to investigate the alpha-case formation of Ti and TiAl castings with process parameter, especially the associated factors of investment mold such as mold material, binder and mold preheating temperature. An attempt has been made to characterize the alpha-case of titanium casting by using optical microscope, EDS, XRD, EMPA and hardness profiles. The formation of the alpha-case on the surface of pure titanium during investment casting was rather by that of solid solution with metallic element from mold material. The required mold strength was obtained with $CaZrO_3$ because of the possibility of using water soluble binder. However, the separation phenomenon between facing and back-up mold materials should be considered. The interfacial reaction of TiAl alloy showed different behavior from that of pure titanium and $Al_2O_3$ was best mold materials. The effect of binder as well as mold material on the formation of alpha-case was significant.

  • A chemically stabilized $\beta$-cristobalite, which is stabilized by stuffing cations of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Al^{3+}$, was prepared by a solution-polymerization route employing Pechini resin or PVA solution as a polymeric carrier. The polymeric carrier affected the crystallization temperature, morphology of calicined powder, and particle size distribution. In case of the polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) solution process, a fine $\beta$-cristobalite powder with a narrow particle size distribution (average particle size : 0.3$\mu\textrm{m}$) and a BET specific surface area of 72 $\m^2$/g was prepared by an attrition-milling for 1 h after calcination at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 1h. Wider particle size distribution and higher specific surface area were observed for the $\beta$-cristobalite powder derived from Pechini resin. The cubie(P1-to-tetraganalb) phase transformation in polynystalline $\beta$-cristobalite was induced at approximately 18$0^{\circ}C$. Like other materials showing transformation toughening, a critical size effect controlled the $\beta$-to-$\alpha$ transformation. Densifed cristobalite sample had some cracks in its internal texture after annealing. The cracks, occurred spontaneoulsy on cooling, were observed in the sample with an average grain sizes of 4.0 $\mu\textrm{m}$ or above. In case of the sintered cristobalite having a composition of CaO.$2Al_2O_3$.40SiO$_2$, small amount of amorphous phase and slow grain growth during annealing were observed. Shear stress-induced transformation was also observed in ground specimen. Cristobalite having a composition of CaO.2Al2O3.80SiO2 showed a more sensitive response to shear stress than the CaO.$2Al_2O_3$.40SiO$_2$ type cristobalite. Shear-induced transformation resulted in an increase of volume about 13% in $\alpha$-cristobalite phase on annealing for above 10 h in the case of the former composition.

  • Al2O3/metal composites were fabricated by oxidation and reaction of molten Al-alloy into two types of commercial Al2O3-SiO2 fibrous insulation board. The growth rate, composition and microstructure of these materials were described. An AlZnMg(7075) alloy was selected as a parent alloy. Mixed polycrystalline fiber and glass phase fiber were used as a filler. The growth surface of an alloy was covered with and without SiO2. SiO2 powder was employed as a surface dopant to aid initial oxidation of Al-alloy. Al-alloy, SiO2, fiber block and growth inhibitor CaSiO3 were packed sequentially in a alumina crucible and oxidized in air at temperature range 90$0^{\circ}C$ to 120$0^{\circ}C$. The growth rate of composite layer was calculated by measuring the mass increasement(g) per unit surface($\textrm{cm}^2$). XRD and optical microscope were used to investigate the composition and phase of composites. The composite grown at 120$0^{\circ}C$ and with SiO2 dopant showed rapid growth rate. The growth behavior differed a little depending on the types of fiber used. The composites consist of $\alpha$-Al2O3, Al, Si and pore. The composite grown at 100$0^{\circ}C$ exhibited better microstructure compared to that grown at 120$0^{\circ}C$.

  • The formation reation of anhydrite (CaSO$_{4}$) depends upon the amount and velocity of the SO$_{3}$(g) and CaO(s) produced in the process of the thermal decomposition of alunite[K$_{2}SO_{4}{\cdot}Al_{2}(SO_{4})_{3}{\cdot}4Al(OH)_{3}$] and limestone (CaCO$_{3}$) respectively. Therefore, this study had carried out to investigate the amount and velocity of SO$_{3}$(g) produced by roasting alunite and pyrolytic materials. In air, alunite was transfouned into KAl(SO$_{4})_{2}$ and Al$_{2}O_{3}$ by dehydration at 500~580$^{\circ}C$. The dehydration velocity of alunite was found to be kt=(1-(1-${\alpha})^{1/3})^{2}$, the activation energy, 73.01 kcal/mol. SO$_{3}$(g) ware slowly produced by the thermal decomposition of KAl(SO$_{2})_{2}$, at 580~700$^{\circ}C$, rapidly, at 700~780$^{\circ}C$, The pyrolysis velocity of KAl(SO$_{4})_{2}$ was found to be kt=1-(1-${\alpha})^{1/1}$; activation energy, 66.84kcal/mol. The SiO$_{2}$ and kaolinite in alunite ore scarcely affected the temperature and velocity in which SO$_{3}$(g) were produced.

  • The effect of calcination treatment of raw powders prior to high temperature synthesis of Ca-${\alpha}$-SiAlON:$Eu^{2+}$ phosphor was investigated. Based on data acquired from thermogravimetric analysis, calcination temperatures were set at 600, 750, and $900^{\circ}C$. Compared to the photoluminescence (PL) intensity of direct synthesis without calcination, a similar intensity was found for the $600^{\circ}C$ treatment, a 19% increased PL intensity was found for the $750^{\circ}C$ treatment, and a 23% decreased PL intensity was found for the $900^{\circ}C$ treatment. Observation of the particle morphology of the synthesized phosphors revealed that the material transport promoted through the agglomerates formed by the $750^{\circ}C$ treatment led to enhanced PL intensity. On the other hand, the oxidation of the starting AlN particles during the $900^{\circ}C$ treatment resulted in decreased photoluminescence.
