Objectives : This study was prepared for investigating the clinical features of stroke patients. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 177 patients who were admitted to the Dept. of Internal Medicine, College of Oriental Medicine, Kyungwon University with a diagnosis of stroke from Jan. I, 1999 to Dec. 31, 1999. Results : Ischemic stroke (74.0%) was more common than hemorrhagic stroke (19.8%). The proportion of males was 53.7%, of females was 46.3%, and the most prevalent age group is those in their sixties. Cerebral infarction was most frequently noticed in MCA territory, hemorrhage in putamen. Hypertension was the most common preceding disease, followed by diabetes mellitus. The rate of recurrence was high in cerebral infarction. The onset mode of cerebral infarction was sleeping and rising and of cerebral hemorrhage was acting. Most patients visited the hospital within 24 hours. The most common symptoms at admission were motor weakness and speech disorder. The most common complication was urinary tract infection. Admission period was 29.5 days. Physical treatment from onset in cerebral infarction and in cerebral hemorrhage was 17.4 and 22.0 days, respectively. Conclusions : Our study of CVA patients was similar to previous studies from 1994 to 1998. In most cases, western and oriental treatment and medicine were given synthetically. Prescription of sasang constitutional medicine had wide application.
To study the clinical effect of moxibustion on the urinary disturbance, which is one of the most common complications of CVA, 60 patients with urinary disturbance due to CVA, who had been hospitalized in Hespital of Oriental Medicine, KyungHee University Medical Cental from May 1st, 1995, to September 20th, 1995, had been selected, and moxibustion treatment had been done. The results were as follows ; 1. In the relation between the radiological size of the lesion and recovery, the real moxibustion group showed significant recovery compared to sham moxibustion group and non moxibustion group in the middle size lesion patients. 2. In the relation between the anatomical lesion and recovery, there was no significant difference among real moxibustion group, sham moxibustion group and non moxibustion group. 3. In the relation between the initial state of urinary disturbance and recovery, the real moxibustion group showed significant recovery compared to sham moxibustion group and non moxibustion group in Gr 3 patients. 4. In the relation between the type of urinary disturbance and recovery, there was no significant difference among real moxibustion group, sham moxibustion group and non moxibustion group.
Background : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of the kinesio taping on the forward head posture and to reduce secondary pain and attitude transformation by applying kinesio taping. Methods : The subjects were the C university students(n = 30) in Chung-buk district without medical history. They were divided into two groups:experimental group(N = 15) and control group(N = 15). Control group was heard verbal instructions to keep right attitude and Experimental group was applied to kinesio taping. Change of an attitude, such as an angle, distance, CROM, CVA, CRA prices, before and after experiment was measured respectively. Result : The results of this study showed that in comparison of pre and post changes, experimental group noticeable changes in angle, CROMSI and CVA(p<.05). Angle, CROMSI and CVA were significant differed between groups(p<.05). Conclusion : Kinesio taping application was seemed to be effective on the improvement of forward head position. Therefore, it is suggested that Kinesio taping application should be one the potential methods to facillitate the forward head position. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to observe the effects of sport massage and McKenzie stretch exercise on forward head posture. To understand the effect, this study measured and analyzed body alignment of the neck. Methods: In this study, a total of 14 subjects with forward head posture were analyzed. Subjects were divided into two groups: group 1 (n=7) received a McKenzie stretch exercise and group 2 (n=7) received a McKenzie stretch exercise and a sport massage. The McKenzie stretch exercise was performed three times a week, for four weeks, while the sport massage was performed once a week. The body alignment of the neck (CVA, CRA) was measured using a goniometer. Results: The improvements in neck body alignments (CVA, CRA) after the McKenzie stretch exercise and sport massage were both significant (group 1: p<0.05; group 2: p<0.05), whereas the between-group comparison found no significant differences. Conclusions: In conclusion, our study confirmed that the McKenzie stretch exercise and sport massage had a significant positive effect on the body alignment of the neck. However, a study that included a greater number of subjects and a long-term treatment period is needed to generalize these results.
Purpose: The study aims to determine the effect of a breathing exercise on shoulder pain, range of motion (ROM), and forward head posture in patients with rotator cuff repair. Methods: In total, 25 patients with rotator cuff repair were included in this study. The experimental group (n = 13) underwent a breathing exercise, while the control group (n = 12) received traditional physical therapy. The visual analogue scales (VASs) for pain, flexion and abduction ROM, and the craniovertebral angle (CVA) of both groups were recorded at both pre- and post-intervention. Paired t-tests were used to determine significant changes in the post-intervention compared with the pre-intervention period, and independent t-tests were used to analyze differences in dependent variables between the two groups. Results: After the two-week intervention, the experimental group experienced a significantly decreased VAS (p < 0.05) and significantly increased ROM and CVA (p < 0.05), while the control group experienced a significantly decreased VAS (p < 0.05). Further, the experimental group that underwent the breathing exercise showed greater improvements in flexion and abduction ROM and in the CVA than the control group (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The results suggested that a breathing exercise can reduce shoulder pain and enhance ROM and posture in patients with rotator cuff repair.
Objective: The popularization of smartphones can lead to abnormal cervical alignment in university students. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship among smartphone screen time, cervical alignment, and muscle function in university students. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Seventy-five university students participated in the study. They completed the evaluation of cervical alignment and muscle function, such as handgrip strength, proprioception, and muscle quality (tone, stiffness, and relaxation time). All participants recorded their general characteristics and individual smartphone screen time before the evaluation. They were evaluated craniovertebral angle (CVA) using smartphone application (angle meter 360) for measuring cervical alignment. The muscle function was assessed using a digital hand-held dynamometer, dual inclinometer, and MyotonPRO device. Results: Of all participants, twenty-five university students had forward head posture (CVA<49°, 33.33%). Independent t-test revealed that there were significant differences on smartphone screen time, muscle stiffness, and muscle relaxation between the participants with and without forward head posture (p<0.05). There were significant correlations between the smartphone screen time and the CVA, muscle tone, and muscle relaxation (r=-0.493, 0.250, and -0.500, respectively). Conclusions: The results indicate that the university students with forward head posture had high smartphone screen time and muscle stiffness compared to the students without forward head posture, and smartphone screen time might be associated with cervical alignment and muscle quality.

This study was performed to examine the presence of dysphagia and analyze characteristics of the symptoms in cerebrovascular accident(CVA) patients without awareness of dysphagia. A questionnaire for this study was given to CVA patients who had visited P rehabilitation medical center in Busan. Eleven patients (4 males and 7 females) who answered no awareness of dysphasia were given to VFSS, functional dysphasia scale, and NCSE. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were performed by SPSS 12.0. All of subjects without awareness of dysphasia showed characteristics of dysphasia symptoms. Prominent dysfunctions were problems in oral phase and delay of swallowing reflex in pharyngeal phase. For the aspect of cognition, they showed lower score in construction, memory, and similarity than other NCSE items. There was highly significant correlation between orientation, judgment and delay of swallowing reflex. Verbal comprehension and residual materials in oral cavity showed closed correlation. CVA patients without awareness had dysphagia with high probability. The early evaluation of dysphagia should be performed in CVA patients in order to prevent complications due to CVA, so it is necessary to increase the effectiveness of rehabilitation therapy.
Hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD) is a viral infectious disease that occurs in children under 5 years of age. Its main causes are coxsackievirus (CV) and enterovirus (EV). Since there are no efficient therapeutics for HFMD, vaccines are effective in preventing the disease. To develop broad coverage against CV and EV, the development of a bivalent vaccine form is needed. The Mongolian gerbil is an efficient and suitable animal model of EV71 C4a and CVA16 infection used to investigate vaccine efficacy following direct immunization. In this study, Mongolian gerbils were immunized with a bivalent inactivated EV71 C4a and inactivated CVA16 vaccine to test their effectiveness against viral infection. Bivalent vaccine immunization resulted in increased Ag-specific IgG antibody production; specifically, EV71 C4a-specific IgG was increased with medium and high doses and CVA16-specific IgG was increased with all doses of immunization. When gene expression of T cell-biased cytokines was analysed, Th1, Th2, and Th17 responses were found to be highly activated in the high-dose immunization group. Moreover, bivalent vaccine immunization mitigated paralytic signs and increased the survival rate following lethal viral challenges. When the viral RNA content was determined from various organs, all three doses of bivalent vaccine immunization were found to significantly decrease viral amplification. Upon histologic examination, EV71 C4a and CVA16 induced tissue damage to the heart and muscle. However, bivalent vaccine immunization alleviated this in a dose-dependent manner. These results suggest that the bivalent inactivated EV71 C4a/CVA16 vaccine could be a safe and effective candidate HFMD vaccine.

Background: Although previous researches have developed interventions for neck problems, headache, and temporomandibular disorder in patients with forward head posture (FHP), changes in masticatory muscle tone or stiffness as FHP worsening have not been investigated. Objective: To examine changes in masticatory muscle tone and stiffness through craniovertebral angle (CVA). Design: Cross sectional study Methods: The subjects were 21 healthy males with normal head posture. Three CVA were established for posture measurement in which the bilateral anterior temporal and masseter muscles were measured during the subjects maintained a series of postures. Results: The Right masseter muscle significantly increased in stiffness with advancing FHP (p < 0.05). No significant changes were observed in the muscle tone or stiffness of any other masticatory muscles, and no significant differences were found in bilateral masticatory muscle tone or stiffness in each measurement posture. Conclusions: This study suggests that the increased stiffness of the right masseter muscle as the FHP worsened requires consideration in physical therapy assessment and intervention.
