Microelectronics components contain various materials with different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE). Although a large amount of published data on the CTE of standard materials is available, it occasionally becomes necessary to measure this property for a specific actual material over a particular temperature range. A change in the temperature of a material causes a corresponding change in the output of the strain gage installed on the specimen because of not only the mechanical load but also the temperature change. In this paper, a detailed technique for CTE measurement based on these thermal characteristics of strain gages is proposed and its reliability is evaluated. A steel specimen, aluminum specimen, and copper specimen, whose CTE values are well known, were used in this evaluation. The proposed technique was successfully applied to the measurement of the CTE of a coreless package substrate composing of electronics packages.
Carthamus tinctorius L.is known to improve fracture healing, and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs) are associated with the formation and healing process of bone. BMP-2 and BMP-7 are two of the most important BMPs during the bone healing process. Human osteosarcoma MG63 cells and rats were used to determine the effects of Carthamus tinctorius L. extract (CTE) on BMP-2 gene expression. BMP-2 gene expression by CTE treatment in human osteosarcoma MG63 cells was not different from the control group until 8 hours of incubation, but was significantly higher, by 31%, than that of the control group at 16 hr of incubation. Microscopic findings of the 9th rib 3 weeks after fracture showed typical rimming of the osteoblast and immature bone formation in control and CTE groups. BMP-2 gene expression by in situ hybridization was remarkably increased by a CTE-supplemented diet in the fracture group compared to the control group. In conclusion, Carthamus tinctorius L. increased BMP-2 gene expression in human osteosarcoma cells and fractured bone. But further studies would be needed to elucidate the effect of CTE on fracture healing in vivo because our results did not show any evidence of healing improvement histologically $3^{rd}$ week after fracture.

In this research, the change of coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of graphite/epoxy composite laminate under space environment was measured using fiber optic sensors. Two fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors have been adopted for the simultaneous measurement of thermal strain and temperature. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) conditions with high vacuum, ultraviolet and thermal cycling environments were simulated in a thermal vacuum chamber. As a pre-test, a FBG temperature sensor was calibrated and a FBG strain sensor was verified through the comparison with the electric strain gauge (ESG) attached on an aluminun specimen at high and low temperature respectively. The change of the CTE in a composite laminate exposed to space environment was measured for intervals of aging cycles in real time. As a whole, there was no abrupt change of the CTE after 1000 aging cycles. After aging, however, the CTE decreased a Little all over the test temperature range. These changes are caused by outgassing, moisture desorption, matrix cracking etc.
BACKGROUND: Cartilage tissue engineering (CTE) aims to obtain a structure mimicking native cartilage tissue through the combination of relevant cells, three-dimensional scaffolds, and extraneous signals. Implantation of 'matured' constructs is thus expected to provide solution for treating large injury of articular cartilage. Type I collagen is widely used as scaffolds for CTE products undergoing clinical trial, owing to its ubiquitous biocompatibility and vast clinical approval. However, the long-term performance of pure type I collagen scaffolds would suffer from its limited chondrogenic capacity and inferior mechanical properties. This paper aims to provide insights necessary for advancing type I collagen scaffolds in the CTE applications. METHODS: Initially, the interactions of type I/II collagen with CTE-relevant cells [i.e., articular chondrocytes (ACs) and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs)] are discussed. Next, the physical features and chemical composition of the scaffolds crucial to support chondrogenic activities of AC and MSC are highlighted. Attempts to optimize the collagen scaffolds by blending with natural/synthetic polymers are described. Hybrid strategy in which collagen and structural polymers are combined in non-blending manner is detailed. RESULTS: Type I collagen is sufficient to support cellular activities of ACs and MSCs; however it shows limited chondrogenic performance than type II collagen. Nonetheless, type I collagen is the clinically feasible option since type II collagen shows arthritogenic potency. Physical features of scaffolds such as internal structure, pore size, stiffness, etc. are shown to be crucial in influencing the differentiation fate and secreting extracellular matrixes from ACs and MSCs. Collagen can be blended with native or synthetic polymer to improve the mechanical and bioactivities of final composites. However, the versatility of blending strategy is limited due to denaturation of type I collagen at harsh processing condition. Hybrid strategy is successful in maximizing bioactivity of collagen scaffolds and mechanical robustness of structural polymer. CONCLUSION: Considering the previous improvements of physical and compositional properties of collagen scaffolds and recent manufacturing developments of structural polymer, it is concluded that hybrid strategy is a promising approach to advance further collagen-based scaffolds in CTE.
Congenital diarrheal disorders (CDDs) with genetic etiology are uncommon hereditary intestinal diseases characterized by chronic, life-threatening, intractable watery diarrhea that starts in infancy. CDDs can be mechanistically divided into osmotic and secretory diarrhea. Congenital tufting enteropathy (CTE), also known as intestinal epithelial dysplasia, is a type of secretory CDD. CTE is a rare autosomal recessive enteropathy that presents with intractable neonatal-onset diarrhea, intestinal failure, severe malnutrition, and parenteral nutrition dependence. Villous atrophy of the intestinal epithelium, crypt hyperplasia, and irregularity of surface enterocytes are the specific pathological findings of CTE. The small intestine and occasionally the colonic mucosa include focal epithelial tufts. In 2008, Sivagnanam et al. discovered that mutations in the epithelial cell adhesion molecule (EpCAM, MIM# 185535) were the genetic cause of CTE (MIM# 613217). More than a hundred mutations have been reported to date. Furthermore, mutations in the serine peptidase inhibitor Kunitz type 2 (SPINT2, MIM# 605124) have been linked to syndromic CTE. In this study, we report the case of a 17-month-old male infant with congenital diarrhea. Despite extensive etiological workup, no etiology could be established before admission to our center. The patient died 15 hours after being admitted to our center in a metabolically decompensated state, probably due to a delay in admission and diagnosis. Molecular autopsy with exome sequencing revealed a previously reported homozygous missense variant, c.757G>A, in EpCAM, which was confirmed by histopathological examination.
Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), which is common in athletes, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease and a long-term consequence of repetitive closed head injuries. CTE is regarded as a chronic brain syndrome due to the effects of repetitive traumatic brain injury (TBI). Because neurotrophic factors are neuroprotective in models of brain and spinal cord injuries, we examined the effects of cerebrolysin, a mixture of various neurotrophic factors, on brain pathology in a mouse model of repetitive mild TBI (rmTBI), which is a good model of CTE. Five groups were created and treated as follows: groups 1 and 2: rmTBI for 4 weeks following cerebrolysin injection for 4 weeks; groups 3 and 4: rmTBI for 8 weeks with or without cerebrolysin injection for 4 weeks; group 5: control. We found that p-tau expression was increased in the pyramidal layer of the cortex and hippocampus, particularly the CA3 region, but not in the CA1 region and the dentate gyrus (DG). Intra-tail vein administration of cerebrolysin ($10{\mu}l$ of 1 mg/ml) after/during rmTBI treatment reduced p-tau expression in both the cortex and hippocampus. Histological analysis revealed mild astrocyte activation (increased expression of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP)) but not microglia activation (ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 (iba-1) expression) and peripheral macrophage infiltration (CD45). Additionally, administration of cerebrolysin after rmTBI resulted in reduced astrocyte activation. These observations in rmTBI demonstrated that cerebrolysin treatment reduces phosphorylation of tau and astrocyte activation, attenuates brain pathology, and mitigates function deficits in TBI. Taken together, our observations suggest that cerebrolysin has potential therapeutic value in CTE.

Generally, component and FR-4 board are connected by solder joint. Because material properties of components and FR-4 board are different, component and FR-4 board show different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) and thus strains in component and board are different when they are heated. That is, the differences in CTE of component and FR-4 board cause the dissimilarity in shear strain and BGA solder joint s failure. The first order Taylor series expansion of the limit state function incorporating with thermal fatigue models is used in order to estimate the failure probability of solder joints under heated condition. A model based on plastic-strain rate such as the Coffin-Manson Fatigue Model is utilized in this study. The effects of random variables such as frequency, maximum temperature, and temperature variations on the failure probability of the BGA solder joint are systematically investigated by using a failure probability model with the first order reliability method(FORM).

Epoxy resin based encapsulants are widely used in semiconductor packaging applications. Epoxy resin based encapsulants are often subject to crack or delamination during the reliability test due to the thermal stress caused by high modulus nature of epoxy resins. Epoxy functional siloxanes are often added into epoxy resin to reduce the modulus so that the thermal stress can be reduced. Epoxy functional siloxanes, additives for reduced modulus, were synthesized and added into the curable epoxy resins. The modulus and the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) were also measured to investigate the thermal stress and to see whether the epoxy functional siloxane adversely affects the CTE or not. As a result, around 26% to 72% of thermal stress reduction was observed with no adverse effect on CTE.
Since the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of matrix phase is larger about 4 times than that of W particle in tungsten heavy alloy, the thermal stresses due to the CTE difference between the two phases are induced in the alloy during heating and cooling processes. In the present study, a series of W heavy alloy containing various W particle volumes of 0 to 90% is made to investigate the residual stress taking place during cooling process. The CTE and residual stress of the series of alloy are measured by dilatometer and X-ray diffractometer. The residual stress of W particle is in compressive stress irrespective of W particle vol% and tends to increase with decreasing W particle vol% while that of the matrix phase is in tensile stress. The measured residual stress of W particle is about a third of calculated thermal stress. The influence of W particle vol% on the residual stress of W heavy alloy is discussed in terms of the deformation behaviors of W particle and matrix phase.

The fabrication process and analysis of thermal properties of 50~76vo1% SiCp/Al metal matrix composites(MMCs) for heatsink materials in electronic packaging were investigated. The 50~76vo1% SiCp/Al MMCs fabricated by pressure infiltration casting process showed that thermal conductivities were 85~170W/mK and coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) were ranged 10~6ppm1k. Specially, the thermal conductivity and CTE of 71vo1%SiCp/Al MMCs were ranged 115~156W/mK and 6~7ppm/K. respectively, which showed a improved thermal properties than the conventional electronic packaging materials such as ceramics and metals.
