We have investigated the electronic structures and magnetism of a full Heusler alloy $Co_2CrGa(001)$ surface by using the all-electron full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) method within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA). We considered two types of different terminations: the Co-terminated (Co-Term) and the CrGa-terminated (CrGa-Term) surfaces. From the calculated layer-projected density of states (LDOS), we found that the surface of the CrGa-Term shows nearly half-metallic character while that of the Co-Term is far from the half-metallic. For the Co-Term, the surface Co atom moves down to the bulk region by $0.05{\AA}A$, while the subsurface Cr and Ga atoms move up to the surface layer by 0.05 and $0.01{\AA}$, respectively. For the CrGa-Term, there is a large inward relaxation of the surface Ga atom $(0.07{\AA})$, but the relaxation of the surface Cr atom is very small $(0.01{\AA})$. The relaxations affect not much to the overall shapes of DOS for both terminations, but make the surface states of the surface Cr and Ga atoms for the CrGa-Term shift to higher energy that enhances the nearly half-metallic character of the CrGa-Term. The magnetic moments of the surface $Cr(2.98{\mu}_B)$ in the CrGa-Term and the surface $Co(1.17{\mu}_B)$ in the Co-Term were much increased compared to those of the inner-layers $(1.79\;and\;0.77{\mu}_B)$, respectively, while that of the subsurface Cr atom in the Co-Term was decreased to $1.19{\mu}_B$.
It is no wonder that mechanical structures are accompanied by problems related to corrosion after being exposed to long hours of work. Corrosion of mechanical structures has been the most serious problem in the field of industry. The present study employed a laser beam irradiation test to improve the corrosion resistance of degraded Cr-Mo steel, which was used for more than 60,000 hours. To find the optimum irradiation test condition for the corrosion resistance of degraded Cr-Mo steel, hardness and residual stress measurements, micro-structural observation, and the electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) tests were performed with changes in laser beam test conditions including laser beam output, diameter, and velocity. Thus, the present study indicates that the optimum test condition and absorption energy for a laser beam test need to be determined to enhance corrosion resistance of degraded Cr-Mo steel.
Three new cyanide-bridged $Cr^{III}Mn^{II}$ binuclear complexes, $[Mn(phen)_2Cl][Cr(bpmb)(CN)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ ($\mathbf{1}$) (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, $bpdmb^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4-methyl-benzenate), $[Mn(phen)_2Cl][Cr(bpmb)-(CN)_2]{\cdot}H_2O$ ($\mathbf{2}$) ($bpdmb^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4,5-dimethyl-benzenate), and $[Mn(phen)_2Cl]-[Cr(bpClb)(CN)_2]{\cdot}CH_3OH{\cdot}H_2O$ ($\mathbf{3}$) ($bpClb^{2-}$ = 1,2-bis(pyridine-2-carboxamido)-4-chloro-benzenate) were obtained based on $Mn(phen)_2Cl_2$ and a series of dicyanidechromate(III) building blocks. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis shows the structures of the three complexes are dimeric type with two different metal centers linked by a cyanide group from corresponding dicyanidechromate(III) building block. Magnetic investigations indicate the existence of relatively weak antiferromagnetic coupling between Cr(III) and Mn(II) ions with best-fit constants $J_{CrMn}=-2.78(5)cm^{-1}$ for $\mathbf{1}$, $J_{CrMn}=-3.02(2)cm^{-1}$ for $\mathbf{2}$ and $J_{CrMn}=-2.27(3)cm^{-1}$ for $\mathbf{3}$ based on the spin exchange Hamiltonian = $-2J_{CrMn}\hat{S}_{Cr}\hat{S}_{Mn}$. The magneto-structural correlation of cyanide-bridged $Cr^{III}Mn^{II}$ complexes has been discussed at last.

The interfacial diffusion in Fe/Cr/MgO(001) multilayers has been studied using synchrotron x-ray techniques, such as x-ray reflectivity, extended x-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS), and anomalous x-ray scattering (AXS). The results of x-ray reflectivity indicated that the interfacial roughness of Fe/Cr multilayers with Cr-$4{\AA}$-thick was larger than that with Cr-$4{\AA}$-thick. The results of EXAFS indicated that the Fe element dominantly diffuse into the stable Cr layers at the Fe/Cr interface. The AXS was certified the existence of the interdiffused Fe element in the Cr layers. Our study revealed that the rough interface of the Fe/Cr multilayers was caused by the interfacia diffusion of Fe element into the Cr layers.
The vertical axis through the modal center of rigidity (m-CR) is used for interpreting the code torsional provisions in the design of eccentric multi-story building structures. The concept of m-CR has been demonstrated by the author in an earlier paper and the particular feature of this point is that when the vertical line of the centers of mass at the floor levels is passing through m-CR, minimum base torsion is developed. For this reason the aforesaid axis is used as reference axis for implementing the code provisions required by the equivalent static analysis. The study examines uniform mixed-bent-type multistory buildings with simple eccentricity, ranging from torsionally stiff to torsionally flexible systems. Using the results of a dynamic response spectrum analysis as a basis for comparisons, it is shown that the results of the code static design are on the safe side in torsionally stiff buildings, but unable to predict the required strength of bents on the stiff side of systems with a predominantly torsional response. Suggestions are made for improving the code provisions in such cases.
Chromated copper arsenate (CCA) is a chemical wood preservative that has been intensively used to protect wood from decay during the last few decades. CCA is widely used to build structures such as decks, fences, playgrounds and boardwalks. However, structures constructed of CCA-treated wood have caused adverse environmental effects due to leaching of Cr, Cu and As into surrounding soils. This research was conducted to monitor the vertical and horizontal distribution of Cr, Cu and As in soils adjacent to CCA-treated wood structures in Korea. Two structures constructed with CCA-treated wood were selected at Hongcheon and Chuncheon in Gangwon Province, South Korea. Eleven soil profile samples were collected at depths of 0 to 80 cm at each site, while 12 surface soil samples were collected at distances of 0 to 200 cm from each structure. The soil chemical properties, soil particle size distribution and total metal concentrations were then determined. The results revealed that soils near CCA-treated wood structures were generally contaminated with Cr, Cu and As when compared to the background concentration of each metal. In addition, the concentrations of Cr, Cu and As in soils decreased as the vertical and horizontal distance from the structure increased. Further studies should be conducted to evaluate the mobility and distribution of these metals in the environment as well as to develop novel technologies for remediation of CCA contaminated soils.
Three different multi-component white cast irons alloyed with Cr, V, Mo and W were prepared in order to study their as-cast and solidification structures. Three combinations of the alloying elements were selected so as to obtain the different types of carbides and matrix structures : 3%C-10%Cr-5%Mo-5%W(alloy No.1), 3%C-10%V-5% Mo-5%W(alloy No. 2) and 3%C-17%Cr-3% V(alloy No.3). The as-cast microstructures were investigated with optical and scanning electron microscopes. There existed two different types of carbides, $M_7C_3$ carbide with rod-like morphology and $M_6C$ carbide with fishbone-like one, and matrix in the alloy No. 1. The alloy No. 2 consisted of MC carbide with chunky and flaky type and needle-like $M_2C$ carbide, and matrix. The chunky type referred to primary MC carbide and the flaky one to eutectic MC carbide. The morphology of the alloy No. 3 represented a typical hypo-eutectic high chromium white cast iron composed of rod-like $M_7C_3$ carbide which is very sensitive to heat flow direction and matrix. To clarify the solidification sequence, each iron(50g) was remelted at 1723K in an alumina crucible using a silicon carbide resistance furnace under argon atmosphere. The molten iron was cooled at the rate of 10K/min and quenched into water at several temperatures during thermal analysis. The solidification structures of the specimen were found to consist of austenite dendrite(${\gamma}$), $ ({\gamma}+ M_7C_3)$ eutectic and $({\gamma}+ M_6C)$ eutectic in the alloy No. 1, proeutectic MC, austenite dendrite(${\gamma}$), (${\gamma}$+MC) eutectic and $({\gamma}+ M_2C)$ eutectic in the alloy No. 2, and proeutectic $M_7C_3$ and $ ({\gamma}+ M_7C_3)$ eutectic in the alloy No 3. respectively.

The fluorescence emission spectrum of Cr$^{3+}$ doped BeAl$_{6}$ O$_{10}$ crystals at 300 K contains a broad band, three R-like lines and another emission lines. It has been identified by a lifetime resolution spectroscopic technique that there are three kinds of single-Cr$^{3+}$ centers, Cr(I), Cr(II), Cr(III), in this crystal. Cr(I) and Cr(II) are high-crystal field centers responsible for the three main "R-lines", and Cr(III) is a low-crystal field center responsible for the main broad band emission. The structures of these luminescent centers are reported.ted.
Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings with a double cermets layer film structure were prepared using a special direct current (dc) magnetron sputtering technology. The typical films structures from surface to bottom substrate were measured to be an $Al_2O_3$ anti-reflection layer on a double Cr-CrO cermet layer on an Al metal infrared reflection layer. Optical properties of optimized Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coating were absorptance (${\alpha}$) = 0.95 and emittance (${\varepsilon}$) = 0.10 ($100^{\circ}C$). Atomic force microscopy (AFM) image showed that Cr-CrO cermet film was very smooth and their grain size was also very small The results of thermal stability test showed that the Cr-CrO cermet solar selective coatings were stable for use at temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.

We have studied the interfacial diffusion of Fe/Cr multilayers using synchrotron x-ray techniques, such as x-ray reflectivity, extended x-ray absorption fine structures (EXAFS), and high-resolution x-ray scattering. The results of x-ray reflectivity indicated that the interfacial roughness of Fe/Cr multilayers increased with the Cr-layer thickness. The Fourier transform (FT) of EXAFS data clearly showed that the Fe atoms dominantly diffused into the stable Cr layers at the Fe/Cr interface. The results of high-resolution x-ray scattering supported the interfacial diffusion of Fe atoms. Out study revealed that the dominantly interfacial diffusion of Fe atoms into the Cr layers effects the interfacial roughness of the Fe/Cr multilayers.
