Decoding processes in portable media players have a high computational cost, resulting in high power consumption by the CPU. If decoding computations are reduced, the power consumed by the CPU is also be reduced, but such a choice generally results in a degradation of the video quality for the users, so it is essential to address this tradeoff. We proposed a new CPU power management scheme that can make use of the scalability property available in the H.164/SVC standard. We first proposed a new video quality model that makes use of a video quality metric(VQM) in order to efficiently take into account the different quantization factors in the SVC. We then propose a new dynamic voltage scaling(DVS) scheme that can selectively combine the previous decoding times and frame sizes in order to accurately predict the next decoding time. We then implemented a scheme on a commercial smartphone and performed a user test in order to examine how users react to the VQM difference. Real measurements show that the proposed scheme uses up to 34% fewer energy than the Linux DVFS governor, and user tests confirm that the degradation in the quality is quite tolerable.

In this paper, we propose an efficient dynamic workload balancing strategy which improves the performance of high-Performance computing system. The key idea of this dynamic workload balancing strategy is to minimize execution time of each job and to maximize the system throughput by effectively using system resource such as CPU, memory. Also, this strategy dynamically allocates job by considering demanded memory size of executing job and workload status of each node. If an overload node occurs due to allocated job, the proposed scheme migrates job, executing in overload nodes, to another free nodes and reduces the waiting time and execution time of job by balancing workload of each node. Through simulation, we show that the proposed dynamic workload balancing strategy based on CPU, memory improves the performance of high-performance computing system compared to previous strategies.
The universe is well known to be consists of dark energy, dark matter and the standard model (SM) particles. The dark matter dominates the density of matter in the universe. The dark matter is thought to be linked with dark photon which are hypothetical hidden sector particles similar to photons in electromagnetism but potentially proposed as force carriers. Due to the extremely small cross-section of dark matter, a large amount of data is needed to be processed. Therefore, we need to optimize the central processing unit (CPU) time. In this work, using MadGraph5 as a simulation tool kit, we examined the CPU time, and cross-section of dark matter at the electron-positron collider considering three parameters including the center of mass energy, dark photon mass, and coupling constant. The signal process pertained to a dark photon, which couples only to heavy leptons. We only dealt with the case of dark photon decaying into two muons. We used the simplified model which covers dark matter particles and dark photon particles as well as the SM particles. To compare the CPU time of simulation, one or more cores of the KISTI-5 supercomputer of Nurion Knights Landing and Skylake and a local Linux machine were used. Our results can help optimize high-energy physics software through high-performance computing and enable the users to incorporate parallel processing.

Purpose: The maximum likelihood-expectation maximization (ML-EM) is the statistical reconstruction algorithm derived from probabilistic model of the emission and detection processes. Although the ML-EM has many advantages in accuracy and utility, the use of the ML-EM is limited due to the computational burden of iterating processing on a CPU (central processing unit). In this study, we developed a parallel computing technique on GPU (graphic processing unit) for ML-EM algorithm. Materials and Methods: Using Geforce 9800 GTX+ graphic card and CUDA (compute unified device architecture) the projection and backprojection in ML-EM algorithm were parallelized by NVIDIA's technology. The time delay on computations for projection, errors between measured and estimated data and backprojection in an iteration were measured. Total time included the latency in data transmission between RAM and GPU memory. Results: The total computation time of the CPU- and GPU-based ML-EM with 32 iterations were 3.83 and 0.26 see, respectively. In this case, the computing speed was improved about 15 times on GPU. When the number of iterations increased into 1024, the CPU- and GPU-based computing took totally 18 min and 8 see, respectively. The improvement was about 135 times and was caused by delay on CPU-based computing after certain iterations. On the other hand, the GPU-based computation provided very small variation on time delay per iteration due to use of shared memory. Conclusion: The GPU-based parallel computation for ML-EM improved significantly the computing speed and stability. The developed GPU-based ML-EM algorithm could be easily modified for some other imaging geometries.

As the number of high-density videos increase, parallel processing approaches are necessary to process a large-scale of video data. When a processing method of video data requires thousands of simple operations, GPU-based parallel processing is preferred to CPU-based parallel processing by way of reducing the time and space complexities of a given computation problem. This paper studies the parallel design and implementation of a shot-boundary detection algorithm. The proposed shot-boundary detection algorithm uses pixel brightness comparisons and global histogram data among the blocks of frames, and the computation of these data is characterized with the high parallelism for the related operations. In order to maximize these operations in parallel, the computations of the pixel brightness and histogram are designed in parallel and implemented in NVIDIA GPU. The GPU-based shot detection method is tested with 10 videos from the set of videos in National Archive of Korea. In experiments, the detection rate is similar but the computation time is about 10 time faster to that of the CPU-based algorithm.

IoT (Internet of Things) devices are being attacked by malware due to many security vulnerabilities, such as the use of weak IDs/passwords and unauthenticated firmware updates. However, due to the diversity of CPU architectures, it is difficult to set up a malware analysis environment and design features. In this paper, we design time series features using the byte sequence of executable files to represent independent features of CPU architectures, and analyze them using recurrent neural networks. The proposed feature is a fixed-length time series pattern extracted from the byte sequence by calculating partial entropy and applying linear interpolation. Temporary changes in the extracted feature are analyzed by RNN and LSTM. In the experiment, the IoT malware detection showed high performance, while low performance was analyzed in the malware family classification. When the entropy patterns for each malware family were compared visually, the Tsunami and Gafgyt families showed similar patterns, resulting in low performance. LSTM is more suitable than RNN for learning temporal changes in the proposed malware features.
Recent advances in communication and multimedia technologies make it possible to provide video-on-demand(VOD) services and people can access video servers over the Internet at any time using their electronic devices, such as PDA, mobile phone and digital TV. Each device has different processing capabilities, energy budgets, display sizes and network connectivities. To support such diverse devices, multiple versions of videos are needed to meet users' requests. In general cases, VOD servers cannot store all the versions of videos due to the storage limitation. When a device requests a stored version, the server can send the appropriate version immediately, but when the requested version is not stored, the server first converts some stored version to the requested version, and then sends it to the client. We call this conversion process transcoding. If transcoding occurs frequently in a VOD server, the CPU resource of the server becomes insufficient to response to clients. Thus, to admit as many requests as possible, we need to maximize the CPU availability. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to select versions from those stored on disk using a branch and bound technique to maximize the CPU availability. We also explore the impact of these storage management policies on streaming to heterogeneous users.
In the semi-conductor process, a simulation process is performed to detect defects by analyzing the behavior of the impurity through the physical quantity calculation of the inner element. In order to perform the simulation, Finite-Difference Time-Domain(FDTD) algorithm is used. The improvement of semiconductor which is composed of nanoscale elements, the size of simulation is getting bigger. Problems that a processor such as CPU or GPU cannot perform the simulation due to the massive size of matrix or a computer consist of multiple processors cannot handle a massive FDTD may come up. For those problems, studies are performed with parallel/distributed computing. However, in the past, only single type of processor was used. In GPU's case, it performs fast, but at the same time, it has limited memory. On the other hand, in CPU, it performs slower than that of GPU. To solve the problem, we implemented a computing model that can handle any FDTD simulation regardless of size on the cluster which consist of heterogeneous processors. We tested the simulation on processors using MPI libraries which is based on 'point to point' communication and verified that it operates correctly regardless of the number of node and type. Also, we analyzed the performance by measuring the total execution time and specific time for the simulation on each test.
Recently various research have been conducted relating to the implementation of signal processing or communication system by software using the massively parallel processing capability of the GPU. In this work, we focus on reducing software simulation time of 2K/8K FFT in DVB-T by using GPU. we estimate the processing time of the DVB-T system, which is one of the standards for DTV transmission, by CPU. Then we implement the FFT processing by the software using the NVIDIA's massively parallel GPU processor. In this paper we apply stream process method to reduce the overhead for data transfer between CPU and GPU, coalescing method to reduce the global memory access time and data structure design method to maximize the shared memory usage. The results show that our proposed method is approximately 20~30 times as fast as the CPU based FFT processor, and approximately 1.8 times as fast as the CUFFT library (version 2.1) which is provided by the NVIDIA when applied to the DVB-T 2K/8K mode FFT.

The memory wall is the growing disparity of speed between CPU and memory outside the CPU chip. An economical solution is a memory hierarchy organized into several levels, such as processor registers, cache, main memory, disk storage. We introduce a novel memory hierarchy optimization technique in Linux based embedded systems using on-chip SRAM for the first time. The optimization technique allocates On-Chip SRAM to the code/data that selected by programmers by using virtual memory systems. Experiments performed with nine applications indicate that the runtime improvements can be achieved by up to 35%, with an average of 14%, and the energy consumption can be reduced by up to 40%, with an average of 15%.
