A Study on Stirling Cryocooler for Precooling Hydrogen Liquefier (수소액화 예냉용 소형 스털링 극저온 냉동기 특성 연구)

  • Korea Institute of Machinery & Materials (KIMM) has developed a high efficient Stirling cryocooler with moving magnet linear compressor for precooling hydrogen liquefier and cooling high temperature superconductor (HTS) devices, such as superconductor cable and superconductor fault current limiters. Hydrogen liquefier and HTS electric devices require cryocooler with cooling capacity of hundred watts to kilowatts at 77 K. The compressor in the Stirling cryocooler uses opposed moving magnet linear motors to drive opposed pistons. High efficient Stirling cryocooler is designed by SAGE-software, manufactured and tested systematically. A cooling capacity of 1 kW at 77 K with an electric input power of 9.6 kW has been analyzed. But prototype test results of the Stirling cryocooler have the cooling capacity of 0.65 kW at 76.8 K with an electric input power of 8.1 kW. And then, 21.5% Carnot COP (Coefficient of performance) of the prototype Stirling cryocooler is achieved. The comparison analysis between SAGE-model and experimental results has shown the direction for further design optimization of the Stirling cryocooler.

Performance Improvement of an Air Source Heat Pump by Storage of Surplus Solar Energy in Greenhouse (온실 내 잉여 태양열을 이용한 공기열원 히트펌프 성능향상)

  • A greenhouse heating system to improve heat pump performance using inside and outside air of greenhouse as a heat source selectively and cut $CO_2$ enrichment costs by delay of greenhouse ventilation was developed. In this system, thermal storage modes divided into inside circulation mode using surplus solar energy and outside circulation mode using outside air heat. The thermal storage modes were designed to be switched mutually according to inside greenhouse temperature and six temperature values were input to control the heat pump operating, thermal storage mode switching and greenhouse heating automatically. Operating characteristics of this system were tested in a plastic greenhouse of non-ventilation condition. The results of test showed that the inside circulation mode began at about 11:00 and lasted for about 210 minutes and inside greenhouse temperature was maintained between $20{\sim}28^{\circ}C$ in spite of non-ventilation. System heating COP of the inside circulation mode in the daytime was 3.35, which was 36% and 25% higher than that of the outside circulation modes in the nighttime and daytime respectively.

An Experimental Study on Characteristics of Cooler by Oil Pressure for Decreasing Heat Load in Cold Storage (냉동창고 내 열부하 감소를 위한 유압 구동식 냉각기의 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As a result of this study, we reached the following conclusions. With appropriate setting of oil pressure and flow rate, it operated same rotation speed with existing cooler by electrical transmission. In initial operation, a temperature of a cold storage is lower rapidly. As an internal temperature of a cold storage is lower, a decreasing rate of temperature is lower. As a result of comparing the both type, the cooler of oil pressure type showed the following results. The decreasing rate of temperature was more faster and shorter operating time was more shorter than existing cooler of electric type. The actual case of a cold storage, the cooler of oil pressure type can prevent quality deterioration and decrease power consumption. As an internal temperature of a cold storage is lower, power consumption increased rapidly, the oil pressure type showed lower power consumption. COP of two of these types decreased continuously as the internal temperature of a cold storage being reach setting temperature, and that of oil pressure type showed higher amount about 25%. As a setting temperature is lower, the number of refrigerator's operating times are less and operating time is longer, so power consumption is increased in the maintenance of a cold storage's internal temperature, power consumption of hydraulic type showed lower amount about 21~25% in two of these types.

Heating Performance Analysis of the Heat Pump System for Agricultural Facilities using the Waste Heat of the Thermal Power Plant as Heat Source (발전소 폐열을 이용한 농업시설용 히트펌프시스템의 난방 성능 분석)

  • In this study, the heating performance and the energy saving effect of the heat pump system using hot waste water(waste heat) of the thermal power plant discharged from a thermal power plant to the sea were analyzed. The greenhouse area was $5,280m^2$ and scale of the heat pump system was 120 RT(Refrigeration Ton), which was divided into 30 RT, 40 RT and 50 RT. The heat pump system consisted of the roll type heat exchangers, hot waste water transfer pipes, heat pumps(30, 40, 50 RT), a heat storage tank and fan coil units. The roll type heat exchangers was made of PE(Poly Ethylene) pipes in consideration of low cost and durability against corrosion, because hot waste water(sea water) is highly corrosive. And the heating period was 5 months from October to February. During the heating performance test(12 hours), the inlet water temperature of evaporator was changed from $32^{\circ}C$ to $26^{\circ}C$, and heat absorption of he evaporator was changed from 175 kW to 120 kW. The inlet water temperature of the condenser rose linearly from $15^{\circ}C$ to $50^{\circ}C$, and the heat release of condenser was reduced by 40 kW from 200 kW to 160 kW. And the power consumption of the heat pump system increased from 30 kW to 42 kW. When the inlet water temperature of condenser was $15^{\circ}C$, the heating COP(Coefficient Of Performance) was over 7.0. When it was $30^{\circ}C$, it dropped to 5.0, and when it was above $40^{\circ}C$, it decreased to less than 4.0. It was analyzed that the reduction of heating energy cost was 87% when compared to the duty free diesel that the carbon dioxide emission reduction effect was 62% by recycling the waste heat of the thermal power plant as a heat source of the heat pump system.

Application Effect of Heating Energy Saving Package on Venlo Type Glasshouse of Paprika Cultivation (파프리카 재배 벤로형 유리온실에서 난방에너지 절감 패키지 기술 적용효과)

  • Glasshouse heating package technologies to improve energy usage efficiency in winter were developed. Heating package was composed of the ground water source heat pump with heating capacity of 105kW, the aluminum multi-layer thermal curtain with six layers of different materials and the root zone local heater with XL pipes of ${\phi}20mm$. Venlo type glasshouse($461m^2$) with the heating package was compared with the same type and area control glasshouse with the light oil boiler, the usual non-woven fabric thermal curtain with respect to the glasshouse inside temperature, relative humidity, crop growth, and heating energy consumption. The results of test in paprika cultivation glasshouses showed that the air temperature inside glasshouse with aluminum multi-layer thermal curtain was maintained $2.2^{\circ}C$ higher than that of control glasshouse in un-heating night time and the temperature in bed with root zone local heating was $4.7^{\circ}C$ higher than that in bed without local heating. Average heating coefficient of performance(COP) of the ground water source heat pump used in paprika cultivation was 3.7 and the glasshouse inside temperature was maintained at $21^{\circ}C$ of heating set up temperature. The heating energy consumptions per 10a were measured at 14,071L of light oil and 364kWh of electric power for the control glasshouse and 35,082kWh for the glasshouse applied heating package. As results, the heating cost of the glasshouse applied heating package was 87 percent lower than that of control glasshouse. The growths of paprika in glasshouses of control and applied heating package did not show any significant difference.
