The effect of advanced oxidation processes such as $O_3$, $UV/TiO_2$, $O_3/UV$ and $O_3/UV/TiO_2$ on decolorization and COD removal of Rhodamine B(RhB) wastewater were considered. The results showed that the higher the $O_3$ concentration was, the higher the decolorization observed and the optimum $TiO_2$ dosage was 0.4 g/L in $UV/TiO_2$ and $O_3/UV/TiO_2$ process. $O_3/UV$ process showed the higher initial decolorization rate constant and the shorter termination time for decolorization than those of the $O_3$ process. The decolorization rate constants in various systems followed the order of $O_3/UV/TiO_2>O_3/UV>O_3{\gg}UV/TiO_2$. The decolorization rate of the RhB solution in every processes was more rapid than the mineralization rate identified by COD removal. The latter took longer time for further oxidation. The COD removal rate constants in four systems followed the order of $O_3/UV/TiO_2>O_3/UV>UV/TiO_2{\geqq}O_3$. Among four processes, combined photocatalysis and ozonation$(O_3/UV/TiO_2)$ was the most prospective process for removing color and COD such as dye wastewater.
The present investigation was conducted to determine the chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency by Pseudomonas aeruginosa EMS1. The COD removal efficiency in the medium containing 1% metal working fluid (MWF) was 12% after cultivation of 4 days. The composition of optimum medium for the COD removal efficiency of 1% MWF by P. aeruginosa EMS1 were NH$_4$Cl 0.3%,$ K_2HPO_4\; 0.05%,\; KH_2PO_4\; 0.04%,\; MgSO_4.7H_2O\; 0.05%,\; CaCl_2.2H_2O 0.03%$ and $FeSO_4.7H_2O$ 0.04% at initial pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$. Under this condition, the highest the COD removal efficiency was observed after 4 days.
The effects of algal inoculation on chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total nitrogen (TN) removal, and indigenous bacterial dynamics were investigated in municipal wastewater. Experiments were conducted with municipal wastewater inoculated with either Chlorella vulgaris AG10032, Selenastrum gracile UTEX 325, or Scenedesmus quadricauda AG 10308. C. vulgaris and S. gracile as fast growing algae in municipal wastewater, performed high COD and TN removal in contrast to Sc. quadricauda. The indigenous bacterial dynamics revealed by 16S rRNA gene amplification showed different bacterial shifts in response to different algal inoculations. The dominant bacterial genera of either algal case were characterized as heterotrophic nitrifying bacteria. Our results suggest that selection of indigenous bacteria that symbiotically interact with algal species is important for better performance of wastewater treatment.
In order to remove the pollutants effectively in the dye-processing wastewater by chemical precipitation, coagulation and flocculation test was carried out using several coagulants on various reaction conditions. It was found that the Ferric sulfate was best coagulant for the treatment of mixed dye-processing wastewater. When the Ferric sulfate dosage was 1,100mg/$\ell$, the COD removal rate was very high(50%), and the color was removed very effectively. The COD was decreased relatively well up to 40%, when Alum was dosed as coagulant. But it was difficult to remove the color effectively. Test results about COD removal for the Ferrous sulfate and the Ferric chloride used were mostly same as those of the Alum used. However, the color removal by the Ferrous sulfate was much better than the case of the Alum or the Ferric chloride. It was found that the COD removal was increased and the sludge yield was decreased by pH control before polymer flocculant addition, during the jar test for the Ferrous sulfate and the Ferric sulfate as a coagulant.
The degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in water was investigated in laboratory-scale experiments, using five advanced oxidation Processes (AOPs) $UV/H_2O_2$, lenten, photo-lenten, $UV/TiO_2,\;UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$. The photodegradation experiments were carried out in a fluidized bed photoreactor equipped with an immersed 32 W UV-C lamp as light source. initial decolorization rate and COD removal efficiency were evaluated and compared. The results obtained showed that the initial decolorization rate constant was quite different for each oxidation process. The relative order of decolorization was: photo-fenton > $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ > fenton > $UV/H_2O_2$ > $UV/TiO_2$ > UV > $H_2O_2$. The relative order of COD removal was different from decolorization: photo-fenten ${\fallingdotseq}$$UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2\;>\;UV/TiO_2\;>\;fenton\;>\;UV/H_2O_2$. The Photo-lenten and $UV/TiO_2/H_2O_2$ processes seem to be appropriate for decolorization and COD removal of dye wastewater.
In this study, we investigated the buffering effect with different COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and TP shock loads on the performance of lab-scale Sequencing Batch Reactor(SBR) using synthetic wastewater. This study was operated under the following conditions : HRT, 12 hrs : MLSS, 2,000 mg/L : F/M ratio, $0.2kgCOD/kgMLSS{\cdot}d$ : SRT, 20days, and was increased by a factor, COD : ranging from 200-2000 mg/L, $NH_4{^+}-N$ : ranging from 30-300 mg/L, T-P : ranging from 5-50 mg/L in the reactor. As results, COD removal rate at different shock loads was decreased until 42.1%(stable state : 95%) and concentration with effluent was higher than 695 mg/L(at Run 6). In case of $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal rate was decreased until 35.8% from 97.0% and also T-P removal rate was decreased until 5.0%. Effluent concentrations of COD, $NH_4{^+}-N$ and T-P were rapidly increased according to shock loads and needed 3, 4 and 6 additional cycle times for recovering the stable condition.
Yarn dyed wastewater has to be treated prior to disposal into the water bodies due to its high content of harmful organic compounds. In this study, the performance of Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) removal and kinetic rate constant are investigated via hybrid electrocoagulation-Fenton in a continuous system using wastewater discharged from a yarn dyed industry in Surabaya city. The wastewater was treated in a batch mode using electrocoagulation to reduce Total Suspended Solid, followed by Fenton method in a continuous system to reduce COD level. Various Fe(II) feeding modes, molar ratio of $Fe(II)/H_2O_2$, initial pH of wastewater, and flow rate are used in this study. The results show that COD removal process obeys a pseudo-first order kinetics. At $Fe(II)/H_2O_2$ ratio of 1:10, initial wastewater pH of 3.0, and feed flow rate of 30 mL/min, the COD removal efficiency was observed to be 80%, and the kinetic rate constant is $0.07046min^{-1}$. The chemical cost for the treatment estimated to be IDR 160 per L wastewater, which is cheaper than the previously reported batch system of IDR 256/L.

Water quality has been deteriorated by the increasing amount of industrial waste water that is due to the better standard of living. In order to lessen the polluted water and substantially reutilize it at factories, a new method is needed. The plasma generator, which uses discharge current below 1,500 voltage and processes at extremely low temperature, has more strong oxidization than current method and an advantage of miniaturizing the apparatus in dealing with waster water by producing carrier gas at room temperature. This study were measured on the 3 kinds of waster water to the plasma generator for 120 minutes. As results, COD was almost decreased and removed in 15 minutes. The results suggest that the plasma generator can be used reduce COD and removal of color for various waster water, which can be reutilized as industrial water, It would be of benefit to the country like Korea in which qualified water is deficient.
When NAR1A species were applied for the dyeing wastewater treatment process, it achieved 20.5% COD removal, whereas NAR3A and NBY3A species could achieve 50.3% COD removal at the same experiment conditions. In the case of real dyeing wastewater experience, Color remaoval was poor and COD removal was increased compare to the case of synthetic wastewater.
The characteristics of food wastewater treatment in an anaerobic packed bed reactor (APBR) with polyurethane as a packing material and sludge bed reactor (ASBR) was studied. The reactor of 9cm-ID, 150cm-height was fed in a continuous mode from bottom of reactor. For the purpose of constant temperature of reactor, water jacket was installed. The used packing materials was polyurethane sponge foam. Methane which was produced by decomposed organics collected at the top of the reactor for using as a fuel. The substrates used were synthetic, mixed and food wastewater. For the acclimatization of microorganisms, mixed wastewater was used. The major analyses were gas production, COD, pH and volatile acids. Based upon the completed works, the results are as follows: When food wastewater was fed the quantity of produced gas was less than that of synthetic wastewater, but food process saw higher methane content than synthetic process. As well as COD removal efficiency of food process reached at about 85%. In aspect of effluent volatile acid, food process showed low concentration of below 500 mg/l, therefore anaerobic reaction stabled. Conclusively food wastewater used can be digested by anaerobic treatment, especially anaerobic packed bed reactor showed 82% of COD removal, 75% of methane content, 10 l of gas production, and anaerobic sludge bed reactor did 79% of COD removal, 75% of methane content, 81 of gas production at 4 kgCOD/m$^3$day, 36$\circ$C.
