The characteristics of stormwater runoff and estimation of unit loads were examined in suburban industrial complex areas. During rainfall event, the peak concentrations occurred within the first 100 minutes after rainfall and then the highest concentration of NPS pollutants sharply decreased, showing strong first flush effect in suburban industrial complex. The cumulative load curves for NPS pollutants showed above the straight line, indicating that first flush effect occurred in suburban industrial complex. While the mean TSS, BOD, COD, TN and TP EMCs values were shown the highest values as 120.6 mg/L, 20.8 mg/L, 44.0 mg/L, 5.58 mg/L and 1.46 mg/L respectively. Unit loads estimated from the EMCs were TSS $43.86kg/km^2/day$, COD $52.45kg/km^2/day$, BOD $24.79kg/km^2/day$, T-N $6.65kg/km^2/day$, T-P $1.75kg/km^2/day$, and Pb $0.10kg/km^2/day$. Results of unit loads were compared with the unit pollutant loads from land-use in Korea and USA. The unit load of TSS was lower than that of USA. Estimated BOD and T-N and T-P unit loads were lower than that of Korea.
The ministry of Environment, Korea, are designing the TMDL(Total Maximum daily Load) program far 4 major large rivers to improve water quality from possible pollutants. It can be successfully performed as controling of nonpoint pollutants from watershed area. Railway stations are stormwater intensive land use because of high imperviousness and high pollutant mass emissions from various activities. Especially the metal pollutants from the railway station were recognized as an important pollutants because of its toxicities. In order to characterize the washed-off pollutants. the monitoring were performed on a railway station during storms. Pollutant concentrations are exponentially decreasing during the storm duration. The 95% confidence interval of pollutant concentrations in an hour storm duration ranges from 61.6 to 115.4mg/L for TSS(mean=88.50mg/L),103.8-244.1mg/L for COD(mean=174 mg/L) and 7.68-17.32mg/L for Oil & Grease(mean=12.5mg/L). The ranges of metals were 39.2-84.0 $\mu\textrm{g}$/L for total Cu(mean=61.6$\mu\textrm{g}$/L), 14.0-25.8$\mu\textrm{g}$/L for total Pb(mean=19.9$\mu\textrm{g}$/L) and 182.2-376.l $\mu\textrm{g}$/L for total Zn(mean=279.2$\mu\textrm{g}$/L). The first flush criteria for best management practices can be suggested to 50% pollutant mass emissions during 30% of the total flow.
Characteristics of concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) pollutant in percolated water at four paddy field sites (Soro, Odong, Munui, and Boeun) were investigated by a nonparametric test. Percolation rate measurement and percolated water sampling were taken during irrigation periods at $5{\sim}10$ day intervals. The normality of percolation rate and pollutant concentrations were examined using histogram, boxplot, and the Kolmogorov-Smirnov (K-S) test. Pollutant concentrations in percolated water showed positively skewed distribution. The median concentrations of pollutant were 1.91 mg/L for TN, 0.021 mg/L for TP, and 6.6 mg/L for COD, which were lower than its arithmetic mean concentrations by $35\%$ for TN, $36\%$ for TP, and $13\%$ for COD. The median concentrations of TN and TP differed significantly among sample sites according to the Kruskal-Wallis test. However, median concentrations were not significantly different among month except for TN and TP of Soro and COD of Odong. The percolation load of pollutants during irrigation periods in the study area were estimated at $3.12{\sim}7.75\;kg/ha$ for TN, $0.033{\sim}0.155\;kg/ha$ for TP, and 10.7 kg/ha for COD, which were much lower than respective values reported in Japan.
In order to establish and implement the total maximum daily load (TMDL) management plan in Korea, it is necessary to set the source units and calculate discharge loads for non-point source pollutants such as BOD, COD, SS, TN and TP. This study analysed the corelation between stormwater runoff characteristics and event mean concentrations (EMCs) of non-point source pollutants. As the result of the corelation analysis, we knew that all the antecedent dry days (ADD) and the rainfall correlated lowly with non-point source pollutants in the urban areas such as resident area, industrial area, business area, road area and parking area. Therefore, it is necessary to get all samples from stormwater starting point to stormwater ending point and standardize the sampling method of stormwater in order to obtain more accurate EMCs for landuse.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to assess removal efficiency of non-point pollutants and applicability for non-point pollutant reduction facilities by conducting the demonstration project operation. METHODS : In order to analyze removal efficiency of non-point pollutants for facilities such as a grassed swale, a small constructed wetland, a free water surface wetland, a horizontal sub-surface flow wetland, and a sand filtration, the field data including specifications of facilities, rainfall, inflow and runoff rainfall effluent etc. was acquired after occurring rainfall events, and the acquired data was analyzed for removal efficiency rate to assess road non-point pollutants facilities using event mean concentration (EMC) and summation of load (SOL) methods. RESULTS : The results of analyzing rainfall effluent, non-point pollutant sources showed that total suspended solid (TSS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), chrome (Cr), zinc (Zn), and lead (Pb) can be removed through non-point pollutant reduction facilities by 60.3% ~ 100%. Especially removal efficiency of TSS, COD and BOD is relatively higher than removal efficiency of other non-point pollutant sources in all kind of non-point pollutant facilities. CONCLUSIONS : Based on the result of this study, even though natural type of non-point pollutant reduction facilities for roads occupy small areas comparing with drainage basin areas, most of non-point pollutant sources would be removed through the facilities.
This study was carried out to investigate the important factors relating to runoff and pollutant loads in a plot unit located in an agricultural area. Of the precipitation parameters, such as total precipitation, days since last rainfall (ADD, the rainfall was more than 10mm) and average rainfall intensity on runoff, the strongest effect was obtained due to total precipitation, but the rainfall intensity showed a slightly positive correlation. It was expected that both variables, i.e. total precipitation and rainfall intensity, would lead to the generation of greater runoff. In contrast, runoff was negatively correlated with ADD, which is understandable because more infiltration and less runoff would be expected after a long dry period. The TSS load varied greatly, between 75.6 and $5.18{\times}10^4g$, per event. With the exception of TN, the TSS, BOD, COD and TP loads were affected by runoff. The correlations of these items were proportional to the runoff volume, with correlation coefficients (r) greater than 0.70, which are suitable for use as NPS model data. The TSS load showed very good relationships with organics (BOD & COD) and nutrients (TN & TP), with correlation coefficients greater than 0.79. Therefore, the removal of TSS is a promising factor for protecting water basins.
Lake Doam watershed was surveyed to evaluate non-point source discharge characteristics and discharge load including several water quality parameters in Song Stream from July 2009 to July 2011. Concentrations of water pollutants were high during the rainfall period, especially, SS, TP and COD showed increasing tendencies toward cumulative water discharge but TN did not show much difference. SS, TP and COD had an initial flush effect of over 50 mm rainfall event but there was no clear tendency for rainfalls below that level. Event mean concentration (EMC) regarding the rainy and dry period showed large differences. Especially rainy season EMC (SS, TP, COD) demonstrated an increasingly high tendency. EMCs of COD, SS, TN and TP measured for twelve rain events were as high as 26.1, 866.0, 4.68 and 0.605 mg $L^{-1}$, respectively. COD, SS, TN and TP loadings from the highland agricultural region of the Song Stream watershed were 34,263, 1,250,254, 2,673 and 933 kg $yr^{-1}\;km^{-2}$, respectively, which were relatively higher than the results of other stream systems. Therefore, it is strongly recommended that long-term monitoring and non-point pollution reduction programs for the highland agricultural area to continue. Furthermore, this non-point source pollution loading research acquired from the highland agricultural area could be the base for reassessment.
